Dionne Warwick's 1963 "Anyone Who Had A Heart" hit the Billboard Top Ten in January 1964 and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tune was a crossover smash and hit #6 on the Billboard R&B Chart and #2 on the Billboard AC Chart. The tune was also a Top 10 hit in Australia, Belgium, Canada and South Africa. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the tune was presented to Dionne in unfinished form while she, Hal and Burt were rehearsing in Burt's Manhattan apartment for a recording session a few days hence at Bell Sound. Bacharach had finished the score but Hal had written only about a third of the lyric and was struggling with what Hal regarded a bad accent in the sixth line of the first stanza, which he could not resolve. Burt played a snippet of the tune for Dionne, and she fell in love with the tune and begged Hal to finish it. Hal, according to his wonderful 1968 book "What the World Needs Now and Other Love Lyrics", went to Burt's bedroom while Burt and Dionne rehearsed in the living room and finished the lyric. The tune was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in Manhattan in November 1963, days after the assassination of JFK, in the same session as Bacharach and David's "Walk On By" and "In the Land of Make Believe". Rumor has it Warwick nailed the tune in only one take. Cilla Black, a top female recording artist in the Uk but little known outside the UK recorded a cover version released in the UK in January 1964 before Scepter licensee Pye records could release Warwick's original and Black's cover became her first number one hit in the UK. Dionne's original version, released two weeks after Cilla's in the UK did make the UK charts at #43. However, in the USA, Black's cover died at Billboard #91. Black remained relatively unknown except to fans in the UK while Warwick went on to achieve worldwide stardom. Anyone Who Had A Heart was Dionne's first international million-seller. Linda Ronstadt covered the tune in 1994 as a tribute to Warwick for the album "Winter Light." Dusty Springfield cut a cover of the tune in 1964 and both Shelby Lynne and Atomic Kitten remakes were released in 2008.
Writes Nick Tosches, the renowned writer, music journalist, novelist, biographer and poet in the January 7, 1972 issue of the rock magazine FUSION; ".getting into Dionne Warwick is like finding buried treasure. The Bacharach/David repertoire which milady chooses to sing is so fascinatingly cynical / fatalistic / stoical / emotional / happy, simultaneously! It's pure emotion. There is a whole lot more to emotion than some rock punk bursting his dexedrine-staved blood vessels by screaming "Baby I need you baby" into a microphone. Dionne Warwick is not a rock and roll singer. She's not a jazz singer either. Rhythm and blues? Nope. A pop singer? No way. Did you ever tongue-kiss with someone who barfed a Singapore Sling bolus into your mouth, and then four years later you're with someone else and you feel good and you realize how beautiful it all was and then it's all melancholy/happiness, sort of? That's the kind of singer Dionne Warwick is. She's beautiful. Dionne, paired with Bacharach's string/horn/reed arrangements, comes up as a lyric mezzo-sopranoid par-excellence, melodious/expressiveness-wise. If you've never gotten into her, you ought to. Get hep to Dionne Warwick. For your own sake."

This is arguably the greatest soft rock pop song of all time. Period. It has everything--feeling, soul, nuance, build to crescendo, beauty. Hard to categorize fully. The dip in register halfway through is sublime. That sax solo! Bacharach is a genius. Dionne was about 20--amazing! I'm 63 and lived this tune in the day. It still gives me chills--fifty freaking years later.

was in a relationship with a guy i work with for 2 months. they were the best 2 months of my life, which says alot coming from me a 32 yr old. it was 9/20/10 - 11/23/10 ...it was perfect, i thought he was the one, then just like that he dropped me! Now i have to see him every other day at work and it is heartbreaking!! Anyways seems like Dionne has more songs i can relate to in this manner than anyone else!

Dionne comes from an entirely different breed of vocalists. That's what made Cissy and Whitney so amazing. Vocals like this ran in their family. No one has these chops and phrasing anymore.

one of the greatest vocalist ever..should be manatory for every wanabe singer to listen to her work...when to sing and when to SHUT UP......she always honors the song not herself when she sings...a much needed lesson for most of the "loud mouths" out there ......

Probably the most powerful, majestic broken hearted song of the entire 60s. Almost operatic in its drama and its compositional ingenuity. Bacharach-David were a true legendary writing team and neither were as good writing on their own or with someone else. With singers like Dionne Warwick for their material, they had the perfect situation to create timeless pop music. Also the production on this tune for 1963 standards is spellbinding.

She is so original, no one can sing so real, so soft, so tender, gentle, so feminine, no wonder Burt and Hal wrote for her, and they all made careers from the relationship. Songs Girls grew up listening to, these messages, back when girls didn't call boys, and lived so much heartbreak inside themselves, wow I remember sitting listening to stacks of her records.

She appeared on American Bandstand over a weekend in 1962 singing Don't Make me Over. We girls stood around in a little circle talking about this girl with the lovely name and out-of-sight voice. One girl said "she was so sharp and seemed nervous...so cute" Dionne never disappointed me since that day. She, Hal David and Burt Bacharach were a wonderful group that totally complemented each other. They gave her a lovely start and their talent flourished, as did hers. Thanks!

My ABSOLUTE favorite Dionne Warwick & Burt Bacharach collaboration ever! I first heard it in the mid 80's from my friend Jeff, who had a homemade mixed cassette tape of all Dionne songs. Remember listening and loving this haunting tune in the ol' Miss Cougar on those summer Denver afternoons. Good times.

La dernière fois, j'ai ressenti ce genre de chill a été lorsque j'ai entendu pour la première fois cette chanson à l'âge de huit ans. L'un des la plupart définition chansons de 1964. ENGLISH: Classic music from a classy lady. Dionne is truly magnificent. The last time I felt this kind of chill was when I first heard this song at the age of eight. This is a great song with a bunch of great versions on the web--Dionne, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark (in French). Can't decide which I like best, although the sweetness in Dionne's voice makes the ending even more bitter. The chords at the end--tonic alternating with flat submediant, is a huge masterstroke which highlights the dispair at the end.

After hearing a few of the covers of this song by other artists, they can't hold a candle to Dionne's version. She so fluid with the lyrics, she sings them so smooth, as where others have to much pronounciation on each syllable. I'm not totally knocking the other versions, but Dionne's is THE version.
