I own a 200ml bottle of the 2012 formulation (don't own the 2017) and feel your comparison was spot-on. However, I prefer the 2012 version for the reasons you mentioned (e.g., it's darker, brooding, and just more interesting with a little of that OG feel). But on my Earth, I wear this more in the Fall whereas I wear Eau Sauvage (not the Parfum) in the Spring. Eau Sauvage 2017, while a nice fragrance, just gets left out. Cheers!
I was thrilled to come across this video, because whenever RU-vid reviewers talk about Eau Sauvage it's nearly always the EDT. I originally bought the EDT and found it to be little more than a liquid version of Lemon Drops, totally straight linear lemon drops candy (like Lemon Heads if you remember them) all day long. Utterly bewildering to me after hearing reviewers praise Eau Sauvage to high heaven for all its depth and levels. But when I found out there was a parfum version I thought, "That must be it, then, that must be where the depth is." So I bought it, and it was everything I hoped for. Can't ever go back to the EDT after wearing the Parfum.
Hello Mr. Sears! I am glad you enjoyed the video, I'll be reviewing both properly individually at some point in the future so I hope you can catch that video too! I like old bottles of the EDT, the latest formulations of it are poor in my opinion. Both versions of this EDP will serve you well if you are looking to smell like a gent with some depth and a bit of class. Thank you for your comment 🤝🏻
@@RichMitch Yes, I assumed that must be it, because the other reviewers I've listened to are deeply experienced, really know their stuff, so when they went all gaga over the EDT I thought, no, they can't be talking about THIS stuff I bought. Now, the Parfum I bought must be the 2017 stuff, so not nearly as "dark" as the 2012, but all the same I really love it.
Very helpful. I’ve only ever had the 2012 and although I do love it I’ve suspected for a while that I may prefer the 2017. You comparison has almost confirmed that Will only truly know until I get my bottle of 2017 , which I have now ordered. Thx.
Another great deep dive into the word of Dior fragrances and Francois Demachy. I love how you provide the complete history of the compositions under review. I am lucky enough to also own both of these, and I mostly agree with everything you've said. My bottom line is that the original is a masterpiece, but not really wearable. The newer version is wearable, but really not a masterpiece. The Eau Sauvage DNA is properly present in both.
Excellent review, Rich! This really helps - thanks. I think I'd go for the newer one (2017) but I'm still mulling it over as my son lives in Miami - and by this time of year it already starts getting pretty hot there!
Great review and your timing is astounding as just last night I wore the 2012 version. I don't have the 2017 but it seems the time to act is now. Cheers.
I’m so glad I found you channel! My two fav’s are Eau Sauvage and Guerlain Vetiver. I wanted the Eau Sauvage Parfum for cold weather / formal occasions. Do you think it’s redundant if I already own the EDT l?
I slightly prefer the 2012 version because it is denser and darker than the 2017. Both are great perfumes that one should have in their collection. Can you do a comparison of PAPH and PAPHI. Excellent comparison, Rich 🦆👌
Still widely available online, I'm guessing it was just a supply chain issue. I love the original formulation of Parfum, it's so much more interesting than the reformulated one.
I have the 2017 version with elemi. I had to grow my nose into liking this. The elemi smells like liquified chewing gum to me and that "gumminess" bothered me. I guess resins can be that way. But I've learned to appreciate it. The 1966 OG EDT Eau Sauvage is my second favorite fragrance of all time.
Excellent 👍 (currently)really like one but love the other, rather like my lifelong preferences between blondes or brunettes.🤷 Brunettes win everytime....hence my love for the 2012 also! Great comparison.
@@dusanninic5372 Wonderful accompaniments to your Grand Day! Yes! We should attend the opera sometime when Tim & I are traveling in Europe! How Wonderful! 😀🙏❤️
In case it's of interest to anyone, I have a 2018 batch Eau Savage Parfum. Love the opening but find it soon dies off on my skin. Good but not great for me with good longevity. Would love to sample the 2012 so will have a look around. I find Francesca Bianchi Etruscan Water to be a more expensive alternative..
I like the 2017 version better. The 2012 is too sweet and heavy. I smell a good amount of vanilla in both. But I like the lavender/hedione/vetiver of the 2017
Thank you for this very important side by side sir! I have others in this genre including Armani Eau pour homme, rochas moustache EDT, and Acqua di Parma Colonia. Would it be redundant to add this bad boy (2017)?
@@RichMitch I actually went through with it .. myrrh oil is more complex than I realized, and it has a woodier aroma on my skin similar to sandalwood. It wasn’t until I stepped outside that the wind picked up its resinous qualities, and it immediately reminded me of the 2012 version. I’m still several hours into the dry down, but the combination already seems like a better alternative than paying the current astronomical prices for the 2012 version.
2012 is better, got a 200ml of it but still love the 2017 for the spring & summer got that also 2012 for fall and winter since it’s more dense and heavier to me
@@RichMitch I purchased the two bottles of the 2012 when they were first released. I've smelled the 2017 a handful of times. It's still great, just find the 2012 to be a bit richer and darker.
I don't have any of them. Shame on me, but I will change that. Both versions will be on my shelfes. I really like the design of that Dior's bottle from 21'st century. Thank you Rich for this video, as my birthday present. Scent Of Birthday : Mitsouko the extrait, from the 1950's. Rachel's decant. What a glorious Chypre !!! Cheers....
@@selcukfb040 not bad, better than the shampoo style of other designers, but certainly projects less than the 2012 or the one Rich Mitch showed in this video. Expect 2 hours of pretty good projection, and then, it sits close to the skin.
@@RichMitch I think it’s available via gray market sites here in the US, but now I see there’s an EDT, too, so I guess I should try that before the parfum. You have a preference?
@@Sliceisnice850 the edt was first released in 1966 and the current iteration isn't great imo. There are vintage EDT out there but I don't think you'd be able to sample those. Personally, I'd grab the parfum whilst you can
