"tunnel of love" is based on marks childhood visits to 'the Spanish city' a fairground on the north-east coast of England, a place called Whitley Bay! and the Cullercoats he mentions is just a couple of miles along from Whitley Bay! it's a legendary 'geordie' anthem and relatable to us who also visited 'the Spanish city' in our childhood between 1950s to its closure. the Dome is still there, but not the fairground! Words to 'tunnel of love' is written on the pavement outside the Dome now, a great honour for 'the boy' Mark knopfler who visited this place in his youth!!!! 😊👍

Marvellous piano provided by Professor Roy Bittan, of E-Street Band fame - love it. Tunnel of Love and Romeo and Juliet are two of my three favourite Dire Straits tracks. They opened with these two songs when I saw them live in Dortmund, 1980. What a vibe. Glad you found out there was more to like than the first album.

March 1981 - was in Tokyo - in the Ginza - and bought a SONY Walkman for $250 1981 money - and two cassette tapes - Making Movies and Eagles Greatest Hits. On a 10 hour flight to Honolulu (bumped to 1st class btw) - I didn't even listen to the Eagles - it was Making Movies over and over - and the finger snap on Romeo and Juliet blew my mind - never had such recording clarity ever been heard before and played back by the generational leap of technology that the Walkman was. Music had never sound as good - until that moment. Now we take crystal clear music for granted - but it was rare in 1981.

Great reaction, Nick. Yeah that first album was so different from what we heard up until then. That second album has a different vibe, because the conditions were so very different for the band. They had achieved fame and recognition, so the motives changed enormously. It was recorded in the Carribean. So the gap between those two albums good not be bigger. On Making Movies the line up had changed. David, Mark's brother had left the band. Mark obviously ventured something new with long stories and subsequent compositions. There is a very good live version of Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy tour.

Excellent choices. :) The first two show off Mark's touch, timing and his use of space/silence. One of the reasons I have always enjoyed his music (with Dire Straights and his solo albums and the movie sound tracks). He comes up with good stories and his voice is perfect for them and his delivery. Spin the whole albums sometime. They're certainly worth it. :)

"Romeo and Juliet" has always been my favorite Dire Straits song. Mark really pours his heart into it. You should watch his live performance from 2009-29 years after the version you just heard, with 29 more years' experience of heartbreak in his voice. Another great DS song is "Why Worry," which Mark wrote specifically for the Everly Brothers. There's a studio version with just the band, but Mark also did a live performance with Chet Atkins and the Everly Brothers: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oIiXoo6TSBs.html. Chet was Mark's mentor and idol, and they made a great album together called "Neck and Neck."

Hi Nick, I remember 1st hearing Sultans of Swing. What is this new sound, like nothing I had heard before ? It wasn't long before buying their debut album, and track after track was just pure joy. My favourite has to be "Wild West End" from that album. They only released 6 studio albums, but every one has something special to offer. Love this marathon, and "Romeo & Juliet" is my favourite on this list, I adore the final minute or so. It's like a silent tear drop, when the lead guitar echoes eventually into it's fade out....Their 2nd album I know you were not very keen on. I'd give it another chance. It's lyrics, ie; on "News" is so clever, letting you think it's a horse ..but it turns out to be a motorbike. I love the 1st track "Once Upon a Time in the West", I always play Loud ! & "Where do you think you're going" is such a well crafted take, on a toxic manipulating relationship. ..... It's a good track to follow with "Private Investigations" from the "Love Over Gold" album....That track will leave you feeling you just watched a Film Noir movie. Atmospheric is an understatement. So clever ! Ok I'm off or I'll end up going through every album. Lol Byee Jim X

@@rudolfbecker4313 Hey Rudi !!!! Good to hear from you. I always remember when the movie Local Hero came out and Mark Knopfler did the soundtrack. He was still in Dire Straits then. Then I bought the Bob Dylan album "Slow Train Running" with Mark as guest appearance. I also got Phil Lynotts solo album "Solo in Soho" and Mark is on that too. Unfortunately here in Blackpool all our record stores eventually shut down due to one HMV Mega store.... and it's probably the worst store in England. I was a huge fan of Barclay James Harvest and had every album ... or so I thought. For years I found no new releases and presumed there wasn't any. Then on a trip returning to Belfast in Ireland where I use to live, and to see my sister still living there ... I went to a record store and found all these BJH albums !! I was sooo happy ...and sooo livid my record store was so bad. I found albums by Nazareth I never knew existed and much more. [ This is before I ever got a computer ] so it was just not there with Mark's solo albums on my radar. As with any music I was moving into other artists and discovering Jazz Fusion and more Prog Rock. I couldn't even tell you in all honesty what Marks albums are called. Cheers Rudi ! Take care.

David Knopfler actualy left the band during the recording of "Making Movies" and all his guitar parts were re recorded, Sid McGinnis was the guitarist that did some of that but I think Mark did a large part of it himself. This album had Jimmy Lovine co producing with Mark, the same producer as "Born to run" by Bruce Springsteen and also had Roy Bittan on keys since Dire Straits did not have a keyboard player yet.

Though I think you’re right that his voice is mixed low on Expresso Love - my guess is deliberately, for whatever reason. And I love It Never Rains, which gives him a chance to stretch out (and show off) on the outro. Others might find it self-indulgent, but I love the groove at the end. I think Knopfler was very influenced by Springsteen at this point, even borrowing Bruce’s pianist Roy Bittan for Making Movies. Glad to get you past the first couple of albums!

I have the same opinion about Dire Straits like you, the first album was magic, the following ones had a couple of good songs, but couldn't top album nr 1. For me especially after I had seen them live right after the release of Communique, where they played most of the first album, enchanting the crowd in a warm summernight openair in 1979 😄 I know all albums except for the last, when I had lost interest after Brothers in arms, which has the - in the meantime - most "hated" Dire Straits song (I don't have to write the title), but also has the maybe best Dire Straits song outside of the first album - the epic title track. I got back into Mark Knopfler, when I coincidentally bought his 3rd solo album - The ragpickers dream . By now I have 10 Mark Knopfler albums, all 9 solo ones plus the one with Emmylou Harris were Top 10 in Germany, 3 of them #1. I think he has become a great story teller, I love when he sings about persons - Rüdiger - or places - Taormina - . I like the way his voice has developped and even more the instrumentation of his solo albums. He has many musicians with all kinds of instruments, some play maybe only a couple minutes on the album, but the art, how Mark Knopfler arranges his songs, never overloaded, each instrument clearly to hear, is everytime such delight to listen to. 🤘

"Money for nothing" is basicly an "one off" song by Mark, also because he wanted the song to sound like ZZ Top who were big on MTV when he wrote it. Other of Marks songs you really should hear are 2 songs from "Love over gold" being "Private Investigations" and the title track "Love over gold", but also "Brothers in arms", "Why Worry" and "Ride across the river" from "Brothers in arms" and "Calling Elvis" , "Fade to black" , "On every street" and "Planet of New Orleans" from the "On every street" album But Mark also wrote many great songs in his solo career

Alchemy the Live Album IS Dire Straits. Don't forget there are 9 (to date )Solo albums and 9 lots of Film Music. Also listen to the Guitar bit in Joan Armatrading song The Shouting Stage the ending is something you want to go on for ever. As far as DS is concerned Telegraph Rpad, Brothers in Arms are a must. From solo performances "If this is Goodbye" needs a listen (the Prince of Wales Concert Mark Explains how he came to write the song and plays it live. there is also the live version with Emmylou Harris).

He also uses hammer ons as well as pulloffs. And I think he also uses palm muting and volume "swells" which give sustain and an organ like tone.

At the local Guitar Center I scanned through the music books, the ones that focus on bands and players, their music notations etc… the one of Mark Knopfler was the most worn out of them all. I imagine players picking it up, thumbing through it, putting it back knowing they’ll never achieve that level of brilliance.

Great selection of songs and Romeo and Juliet has a Bruce Springsteen feel from his Born to Run album. Fantastic!

The Indigo Girls do a great cover of Romeo and Juliet. In fact, I prefer that version (sacrilege!). It's probably because I heard that version first. I wasn't crazy about the Dire Straits version at first, though it's grown on me.

Nick, when you said that Mark Knopfler's voice isn't "beautiful", I said, "I think it is!" Not unlike Bob Dylan, Knopfler's voice is so expressive, and it's his *phrasing* that gets me every time. I just love his lyrical imagery. The "Spanish City" he sings of in 'Tunnel Of Love' is part of an amusement park near where he grew up in Blyth, England. 'Romeo & Juliet' was written about Knopfler's relationship with a former girlfriend.

I think his voice is amazing and I actually talked about how much I like it. It's rough because he used to smoke and drink in his youth.

Not only a unique voice and singular guitar playing style but a great lyricist too! Quite a heady combination to take in and critique, but over the years having seen them in their heyday, I return to DS regularly mainly through Making Movies and Love Over Gold albums. If you havn't done Telegraph Road yet get your finger out Nick! It's absolute genius.............

Please react to some Mark Knopfler solo songs. Speedway at Nazareth with Emmylou Harris would be a great start. Hill Farmer’s Blues would be another.

Nick, now that you have absorbed the music side of this track, I could give you some background to the lyrics. English fairgrounds (carney?) and the North-east of England, especially the Spanish City in Whitley Bay, now changed completely.

You need to give a serious listen to ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST from the album Communique'. Also, you missed SKATEAWAY from Making Movies - they had a nice official music video for that one, which ran a lot on MTV and helps visualize the tale.

Dire Straits music is so complex and the guitarist is a legend. I would argue this is one of the best folk rock bands of all time. My favorite song is "Sultans of Swing" but my favorite album is definitely "Making Movies".

The Making Movies album was one song away from perfection. If the song Les Boys had either been left off or replaced with anything else, it would have been perfect.

Was thinking exactly the same as you about the mix on Expresso Love before you brought it up - Making Movies was an album that I listened to A LOT in the eighties (I saw Dire Straits live on their Brother in Arms tour in '85). I've only ever had the album on cassette (most likely copied off a friend or a borrowed vinyl LP from the local library - I was only a poor student back then!) so wouldn't have listened to it on headphones much... it's only now become clear to me that I can't have paid much attention... that track sounded really badly put together on this listen. Instruments and voice just seem to have been squeezed together into a strangely narrow channel where they end up constantly fighting for space. David Knopfler fell out with his brother after their first couple of albums so it'd be Hal Lindes playing on Making Movies, I think. I don't believe they ever reconciled. Worth checking out David's lengthy catalogue, it's full of good stuff - he's a thoughtful musician and lyricist. (I just checked and Hal Lindes joined them later so didn't play on MM, looks like they brought in a fairly prolific session musician for some of the guitar parts.)

I agree that Expresso Love is badly mixed. There is a thumping quality to the music.

If the version you were listening to was from a remastered release, you would be correct in that the sound wasn't quite right. Find a version either from the vinyl album or the original Warner Brothers cd. The dynamic range and overall sound quality is much better.
