Guys, you need to check out Sultans of Swing from Alchemy Live. It’s from a 1983 concert and has a little harder edge than the studio version, and it’s epic. Thank you for all of your reactions!

Dire Straits is so good live. Saw them many years ago. Knopfler just so good at improvisation when he plays. Always a jam session. This song is similar in structure to “Six Blade Knife” another great groove tune.

Hey guys. Love your channel. I really recommend the song Brothers In Arms-Live Dire Straits "On The Night" 1993. Every reactor I've seen stated that it had a massive impact on them. Marks guitar playing on his Pensa is breathtaking. Dire Straits Live is so much more enjoyable as you get to see Mark and the band do their thing. So talented. Anyway Cheers from Australia 😊🎸🎸🎸

Others have suggested checking out some performances from Alchemy Live. I think you might also enjoy 'Once Upon a Time in the West' - the opening song from that concert.

What an absolute treat guys! Mark is an incredible guitarist and is a pleasure to watch live. I've never had the privilege of seeing him live but there's lots on RU-vid of course. You talk about his 'country' sound on the debut album; check out his 2006 collaboration with Emmylou Harris called 'All The Roadrunning'. It's a tremendous album and the tour supporting the album is on RU-vid. My favourite track is 'This Is Us', Emmylou is just so cool and beautiful, and Mark plays a killer solo with a great band backing them.

Yup: Sultans of Swing from Alchemy. And Telegraph Road, from the same concert tour. But especially Sultans. You won't believe anything about it, especially how much more confident Mark has become by then - and the DRUMMING! One of the most exciting performances I've ever seen. Anywhere.

Saw Dire Straits 3-21-79 for $5.00 in a small bar in Houston called Texas Opry House. It was their 1st tour. Good show. Saw the Police at the same venue earlier that month for $3.00. Also 1st tour.

Guys, you really have to watch Sultans of Swing on the Alchemy live album. It will blow your mind. It's incredible. The drummer, Terry Williams, not Pick on first 4 albums, is just unbelievable. Here are some facts for you. MK is naturally left handed but plays right as his sister told him guitarist's don't play left handed so he learnt right. Pick Withers real name is David but Marks brother is David, so to save confusion, he changed to Pick.

''When it came to recording Steely Dan’s 1980 album, Gaucho, Fagen and Becker would provide another clear example of their character. For the track ‘Time Out of Mind’, they enlisted Dire Straits frontman and guitar hero Mark Knopfler after being impressed by his work, particularly on the track ‘Sultans of Swing’. Accordingly, they invited the guitarist to play the song’s solo. This broke from the band’s normal way of working, as Knopfler couldn’t read music, the band’s usual modus operandi.Knopfler became frustrated by the long and drawn-out studio sessions. In addition to this, Fagen and Becker had a brazen way of criticising his work and lack of progression, which only compounded his feelings. Showing the extent of the sessions, Knopfler recorded over ten hours of guitar for the band only to use 15 seconds in the intro. “It was a strange experience,” Knopfler recalled, “Like getting into a swimming pool with lead weights tied to your boot.” When asked about Knopfler’s frustration, Becker added: “I think he definitely felt that, because he would play something and it was OK, then we’d like it later.”-Far Our Magazine

I read about this on Wikipedia. Its not very common for rock & blues players to read music. I learned it before playing the guitar so it was already a thing for me. I also started with classical guitar and had to read to learn. I think it was a waisted opportunity to have only used seconds of his recordings. I love Steely Dan to death but that was literally a crime. Knopfler is literally a genius!

Dave Gilmour the best at slow emotional guitar... Jimmy Page at shredding... Mark Knopfler the best at both!

I agree with David having written some of the most iconic solos ever recorded. Mark has one of my guitar tone in guitar music. He is not shredder. Page is a good composer but his guitar playing leaves a lot to be desired. Check out Guthrie Govan, Brett Garsed for that shredding itch.
