I keep listening to their debute again and again, sometimes i dont listen to it for a few days and then i go back to it, its surreal how can a band start their carrer like this. Truly incredible

+mojopin 70 I agree !!! I find it hard to listen to the later dire straits after hearing this early stuff . The band just wasnt the same after David and Pick left . This is the pure raw stuff
@@aliceroberts4808 Especially after Pick left. I know nothing of drumming, but those that do say he was very good. Listening to Terry Williams vs Pick, yeah I can see Pick was more solid/creative. Terry seemed rather run of the mill. As much as I appreciate the starkness (and for me, the true Dire Straits sound) of the first two albums (which include David), I think the addition of Alan Clark was brilliant, as his piano prowess is phenomenal (listen to Telegraph Road).
On all of the dire straits videos I’ve watched everyone talks about Mark’s amazing guitar playing but I don’t see no love for his VOICE! This dude is a bad ass!

WOW, I never thought I would like a band so much like I like Dire Straits. I have been listenin these songs for ever and everytime i tune it, it sounds new again, everytime i tune it, i hear something dif in marks guitar.. Amazing!
I glad to rediscover the music of my youth. I followed Mark 's daughter (didn't know that was his daughter) and rediscovered such great music. Beautiful.
That's cool and hell ! does it swing ! Swing is gonna live forever with such youngsters. Mr. Knopfler is one of the great guitarists we are graced to listen to today.
The guitar players among us will notice that Knopfler seldom, if ever, uses the trem bar on his Strat during fills or solos -- a technique so crucial to the style of David Gilmour or Jeff Beck. Instead Knopfler uses the trem bar, as far as I can tell, only to "shimmer" chords during atmospheric intros or endings. (Like I do.) In fact, at the end of this song, you'll notice Knopfler manipulates the neck of the guitar to slacken the pitch of the chord, rather than use the trem bar to achieve the same effect -- like he's playing a Les Paul, SG, Tele, or other guitar without a trem bar. I've been a rabid Mark Knopfler aficionado since 1978, and a guitar player, and I've never noticed this until now.

the part after he says "you know i dont want it no more" followed by the sound of the guitar. if that's not the perfect sound to illustrate what its like to be 21 or 22 i don't know what is . that's youth perfectly captured in music .
Couldn't agree more..Marks lyrics are fantastic..I worked in Soho in years gone past..the words of Walking in the wild west end..take me right back there..I saw exactly what he's singing about...gives me goosebumps..
Everything was so sincere then... Just the four of them; no touring musicians, no synthesizers, no '80ies baby-boomers to satisfy. Imagine the laid-back vibe there must have been at these gigs!

i think that the song is about the guitar.. (6 strings) expression to love. hate. passion,, even addiction about playing the guitar.. or love.... everybody got a knife,, a needle,, a wife,, something you can't see!!!
As a guitarist the 5th Dire Straits or should I say Mr Knopflers song I fell in Love with.....for its simplicity and the key change.....so good to see them when I was 11....
