Mastership means not just skills, but also an easygoing delivery of those skills. At the time we had a Rally driver over here in Germany, Walter Röhrl. I still compare Knopfler's guitar playing with Röhrl's driving. Such a high profession and level in both cases but also such an effortless delivery of that skill!
Man I love how (in a non insulting way) mark looks like he woke up, so chill and cool in the way he plays, man Dire Straits really are THE Sultans of swing.
I never hear anybody talk about him when it comes to guitar playing but his fans. For me, he, Rory and Ritchie Blackmore are the greatest, however, I think Mark is underrated too.
This is why he is one of the greatest guitarists. Started Played the last solo instead of playing the first, and still managed to improvise and make it sound good.
When God decides to perk your life up, he gives you talent like this. But it never lasts with that initial intensity. Wonderful that we have a record of when the light was just BLAZING down!
I was thinking the same thing ! On most of the rock video's they zoom in on the bass player,drummer,etc.., while the lead guitarist is doing his solo...
Ive heard it a thousand times or more. This wasn't the polished studio recording some expected. But, MAN, HE WAS LIVE! Playing his guitar his way. Fantastic, and I saw a flash of a smile after the riff? near the very end! He was really happy too!
The band didn't eat a lot back in 1978, they all shared a flat in depford and practise sultana for 10 hours all night to get it right and perfect, that's hard work and dedication
Mark at his fluid best! It was my "61" Fender Stratocaster that I sold it to him in 78, (best 350.00 quid he ever spent!)It was originally black (I had it resprayed by Derek the "Burns" guitar polyester finisher from Hackney) the neck is also "61" but had a maple fingerboard fitted so that it looked like an earlier 50s model, Mark lost the volume knob if you look, also he sometimes put a bit of black plastic under the trem/bridge to stop it moving. Happy times! wheres the guitar now Mark!?
I dont think this is mark at hist best, he became way more of his use of vibratp and bending in the mid 80s. Though I do agree this is a legendary guitar
I noticed the paint job looked strange, looks like a bit of an issue with the trem arm here lol. What was the tiny switch i noticed on the scratch plate?
the band is so tight, I bet even I would sound good with them backing me. Then put the magic of Mark in there, and it gets unreal...i used to listen to just the drummer playing the high hat on the album...just brilliant....I see 117 people with complete deafness give this thumbs down... they should have their thumbs surgically removed for this crime against music......
wow Iam excited tomorrow, will watch the band live.i wish my husband wasn't far away ,to watch his favourite band.thank you my lovely husband for teaching me how to listen to refined music.well come to Mozambique Dire Straits
Having a loose tremolo arm is history in the making, watch later concerts Mark dispensed with the tremolo arm. Not everyone is aware Mark is left hand, not many left handed Guitarist play right handed.
Mr Butler-Pont middle school-this song makes me think of u-know you loved Dire Straits-u sir were the best teacher I had by a mile. Don’t know what happened to you-but u were a credit to your profession! Plus your musical taste was impeccable! Hope you are keeping well!
Nossa! 1979...tinha eu 17 anos...e já sabia distinguir uma música boa de uma boa canção de ninar...kkk ,esse som sim...converte qualquer coração...viva o rock!!6/19😍
You get a shiver in the dark It's raining in the park, but meantime South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowin' Dixie double four time You feel alright when you hear that music ring And now you step inside, but you don't see too many faces Comin' in out of the rain, you hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Oh, but the horns, they blowin' that sound Way on down south, way on down south London town You check out guitar, George He knows all the chords Mind he's strictly rhythm He doesn't wanna make it cry or sing Yes, and an old guitar is all he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doin' alright He can play the Honk Tonk like anything Savin' it up for Friday night With the Sultans With the Sultans of Swing And a crowd of young boys, they're fooling around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band It ain't what they call rock and roll And the Sultans Yeah, the 'Sultans' played Creole. Creole, baby And then the man, he steps right up to the microphone And says: At last!, just as the time bell rings Goodnight, now it's time to go home And he makes it fast with one more thing We are the Sultans, we are the Sultans of swing
ces super, que dire!!, j'aime bien, un chanteur, un group, un tout, que de musique, et de chands, trop top, domage qu'il sont sont plus là, il avait leurs places, dans le temps.
This was around the time I first saw them as a support band in Sheffield, they blew away the main act and were a superb live band right from the start.
