Infantry soldiers from across the Australian Army conducted the Officer and Non-Commissioned Officers Direct Fire Support Weapons (DFSW) Course over 4 weeks in May 2022 at the School of Infantry in Singleton.
The aim of the course is to train personnel in the skills, knowledge and attitude that are required of commanders in the DFSW platoon and DFSW in-service weapons.
Infantry battalions DFSW platoons are employed to suppress, neutralise or destroy enemy dismounts, vehicles or structures. This is achieved through both anti-armour weapons and the use of machine guns in both direct and indirect roles.
Weapons used by DFSW include the 84mm M4 Carl Gustav, Javelin FGM-148, MAG 58 Extended Range Machine Gun, 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun and Mk47 Lightweight Automatic Grenade Launcher.

This platoon's mission set appears very similar to that of their Canadian Direct Fire Support counterpart, the Toronto Scottish Regiment. They also employ the M2 Browing .50 cal & automatic Grenade launchers.

Gustav also works on enemy infantry that stand too close together.

Or those pesky guys entrenched in structures or behind walls. Time-delayed 84mm do wonders on airburst. Ol' Charlie Gutsache does a number on everybody

Singleton looks “great” as always. However the proof reading sucks “Armored” (try Armoured) and “millimeter” (try millimetre) - Really?! A PAO somewhere needs an Australian dictionary.

Why are the MAG 58s, Carl Gustavs and HK417s are at the Battalion level? I thought they'd be at a platoon or company level.
@ChillTwins
@ChillTwins 2 года назад
they are at platoon level, but the DSFW platoon specialies in them and provides a "heavy weapon" platoon for commanders to manoivior and plan with. Used as a support assest to a normal rifle company platoons manoiviourbility on the battlespace.

Each rifle platoon already has 2 Mini MG, 2 LAWS and 2 Grenade Launcher. These are meant to be light and mobile. DFSW platoon operate in pairs backing up Rifle. Where the anti-drone and anti-air platoon weapons.

Yeah but an Infantry platoon should have a 12 man manoeuvre support section with 3 teams of 4 each consisting of a commander, a machine gunner (Mag58) a designated marksman (HK417) and a grenadier that can also carry a Carl Gustav if required.

@@mike-hunt3527 We don’t carry mag 58’s or HK’s anymore at platoon level

@@mike-hunt3527 I left in 2017 and infantry at the time were running light as it was. 7-8 man sections because they didn't have the numbers to fill the standard 12.
