It's really worth mentioning that the biggest beneficiaries of Vulkan and DX 12 lately have actually been emulators. Dolphin has seen upwards of a %50 speed boost with it's DX12 backend implementation, and emulators for 7th gen consoles have seen tremendous headway in functionality.

OMF2097! Loved that game. As for the old video card makers that we've lost from the gaming space, I really miss Matrox video cards. They always had the best drivers and best video quality, but they just fell too far behind on triangle counts with the Parhelia. They do live on in server class hardware though.

@VADemon

16:45 What this could actually mean is that for next-gen consoles, the focus of die distribution can shift to the graphics part. Better graphics with a smaller and less powerful CPU. Given how powerful Zeppelin is in multicore and multithreading AMD could trade CPU performance for GPU without bottlenecking the graphics part. The master plan evolves. Going back in history is always a lesson, many people don't realise.

+AdoredTV Well, set your goal at 500,000. I mean good luck ever hitting Linus Tech Tips 2,000,000 but as far as the other tech vloggers go there are way to many nvidia sh!lling fanboys. The only balanced individual is "Tech of Tomorrow", even JayzTwoCents while decently balanced can get annoying with his Nvidia bias. We need another prominent tech youtuber who is balanced and calls out company's like Nvidia on their bullshit. To get there though you're going to have to release more content on a more regular basis and they are going to have to be videos about hardware because "gaming" vids simply don't work anymore. You're going to have to convince companies that you are legitimate enough to deserve free hardware to review!! Many people who actually care about the custom PC and gaming industry realize that AMD NEEDS to do well for consumers to not get completely screwed over and anyone with a bit of moral fiber understands that Nvidia cannot be allowed to continue its anti competitive, shady practices. You are the only one I've seen that is able to really put things into perspective in a video with logical thought out arguments. We NEED you to be successful more than you can possibly imagine lol. Inferior performance in DX12 and Vulkan in some titles is very likely because of lack of experience on development side. When you go lower level, it is easier to screw up. Talos Principle is a good example, as devs were expecting first version of Vulkan port performance to be equal to OpenGL at best. Once they get more practice with that kind of lower level GPU programming, things will get better. For those curios enough I can recommend "Vukan sessions @ GDC 2016" where they had few lightning talks on different aspects of Vulkan API, common pitfalls and best practices.

Actually mantle couldve worked on NVIDIA cards, NVIDIA just needed to put a little work in it. Something they obviously did not do, until it was changed into Vulkan. source(ish): wccftech.com/amd-mantle-api-require-gcn-work-nvidia-graphic-cards/

So in the far future, if the next gen game consoles are using Vulkan, does that mean that we could take an "Exclusive" PS5 game and do some kind of DRM hack so that the XBOX "TWO" could play it, assuming they are using the same exact API? Consoles seem to slowly be evolving into PC grade hardware with a custom OS over, so its not entirely crazy to assume that the next gen consoles will just be PC hardware using the same exact code, but just overlaying some DRM to keep the game exclusive. Or am I overthinking this?

+foreign's gaming tech Regarding Vulkan adoption, I don't think it will gain much support unfortunately since Apple went their own way. It would work if Vulkan was for everything else. Now it's largest support comes from Android, and that wasn't quite what we hoped for... I really don't understand why Apple did this now. They have crapped on gaming for so many years despite a demand. All they had to do was to keep up with the latest OpenGL. If Apple was on the boat I would say it had a chance.
@94fleetwood49
@94fleetwood49 8 лет назад
+Snetmot Nosrorb When was Apple ever relevant to gaming in general other than on their closed platform? Android is still a large platform in mobile, but mobile gaming is on a whole other ecosystem most PC/console developer's aren't trying to create games on. Apple's decision to have the isolated "Metal" api makes business sense from Apple's position. It instantly ties any software to Apple's devices and prevents piracy to "cracked" devices. I don't own Apple products, so I could care less about what they do.
@snetmotnosrorb3946
@snetmotnosrorb3946 8 лет назад
FL33T WOOD Being a Mac user isn't equal to not being interested in games. Half the reason why games don't come to Mac is because it's not technically possible without major changes in the code, because Apple have taken the stance of not bothering to keep up with OpenGL. Mac not supporting Vulkan in effect means Vulkan will just be an Android API The strength of Vulkan should be its universality. There's really no other incitement to choose it over DirectX. You bet Microsoft gives game developers some hard incitement to use DX, since games are a major reason why people use Windows. So Vulkan in itself has to give something else, and it's always been about compatibility. If it doesn't work on all PC OS:s for home users, it will fail. If Mac supported Vulkan, I bet a lot more game developers would go the extra mile and release their games on Mac too. Because it's just 1 extra mile, not 50 like today. And Mac is a growing platform. Apple going with Metal only makes sense if they think full control over the complete software ecosystem is worth more than having a wide supply of software. That is also known as vendor lock-in. And that only works good if you are a major player and can afford the bad-will it generates. Iphone is not all that big anymore, and it is slowly but steadily getting smaller. In that scenario it doesn't make sense to go with a niche API. They wouldn't really sacrifice anything by going with Vulkan. Sure, Metal surely gives a little more performance, since they probably tweak it for their phones, but at the expense of software supply, both some on their Iphone and significantly on Mac.

This is going to be one hell of a marketing war in the maintime, which may be part of why AMD re-tweeted this. As you said towards the end there, AMD's GPUs and CPUs are well positioned to take advantage of DX12 and Vulkan. As DX12 plays a larger role in benchmarking there's going to be more and more shouting from AMD/NVidia on whether or not a title is a 'true' DX12 title as it seems quite likely that there will be little consistency between titles for a while.

The new low-level APIs bring an issue of backwards compatibility to the table. So while we're going to see Vulkan/DX12 work on newer hardware, older GPUs will have to be supported by DX9-11. What do game devs have to say about it? It's going to make their creation process that much harder.

AdoredTV Allow me to type my thoughts upon realizing all this "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk" I think the fact the Microsoft is trying to merge Xbox One features into Windows 10 also helps prove that Microsoft is trying to be a major games distributor
@gameguy301
@gameguy301 8 лет назад
+Pan Z Dx12 is windows 10 exclusive because it relies on fundamental changes to the windows kernel, more specifically WDDM 2.0. there were many articles on this almost a year ago. it should come to no surprise that if you want to minimize interference between GAME / API / OS / DRIVER / HARDWARE, that adjusting both your OS and API and then asking vendors to adjust their DRIVER is necessary. the windows store crap is obvious, they want to minimize cost porting game between xbone and PC and they also dont want to give distributers like steam, GoG, origin, a cut of the sale on their own games. they need to hammer out the problems with UWP and fast, or their sales figures will suffer far more from consumer distaste than they would from paying 30% per sale to a retailer.
@Legion-495
@Legion-495 8 лет назад
+gameguy301 I think they have no chance in that sector given GOG most times old games you hardly get running these days and Steam a big library for everything. It will more likely be like Uplay and Origin with few maybe good games but probably hated. Origin and Uplay used to have games on Steam so they got people on there Plattform but Windows does not use this step and thats the reason it will be very unknown and unliked-> it will die again. The only positive I gain from this here, If you get the Xbox Game you at least have a somewhat useable game on PC too. Well at least thats how I see that and I think we have WindowsLive2.0 here except this version comes with handicapped games which consume more space sometimes and miss several features.

0:41 ah, back then where consoles were all about gaming, rather than what we have today. When you wanted to seriously game back in the 80's and 90's, you bought a console. Strange how things have changed

+Pan Z Yeah I used to have a ton of consoles back then, haven't had one since the PS1!
@Pan_Z

AdoredTV The PS2 wasn't bad. It represented devs accounting for the hardware limitations. Devs used the extra power to make 3D games run at 60fps. Today, we see many devs pushing consoles beyond what they're capable of and getting an unstable 30fps. There is good news. Many devs are once again targeting 60fps, though these 8th-gen consoles are a bit underpowered. Anyway, it's strange to think that, back in the 80's and 90's, a console could even be more powerful than a gaming PC

+AdoredTV Haha. M8 I can't stress how excited I am for your channel to blow up! idk why.. Like when my dad bought me my first phone which was the galaxy s5. I was like rediculously happy. Cus I had a high end smart phone at the time. I was like.. :DDD haha. Anyway an apple fanboy came up to me at school and mocked my phone and all I could think about was samsung dominating the market wiping out apple in the process. and that's how I got interested in tech apart from the fact that I had a really bad AMD laptop that burnt a hole in my leg and drained the battery in 10 secs. haha and my first game that I ran on it was crysis 2 that I was terrible at online. and when I started trying to work out how samsung could dominate the market I started to realise what components fit where etc you know what happens next. Then I bought myself a completely amd rig because as you even say in this vid they usually have more cores with less on each. before I didn't understand that and bought according my theory of bang for the buck haha. now because I saved up. (funnily enough buying and selling graphics cards and phones for a profit - mainly phones) I bought myself a rig with 2 gtx 970's and an I7 4790k. lol sorry to bore you with this story but because of that initial fanboyism I told myself that if I am to become a fanboy I wanna be on the winning side. If you were a fanboy guaranteed that will be the winning side. lol sorry again haha. I'm your fanboy... haha. keep making amazing vids man!

About the VRAM usage. Isn't that, just as regular RAM, only for caching information for faster availability? I think it was Jayztwocents that made a video around VRAM usage in 4k, showing that a card that uses more than 4GB VRAM won't necessarily gain performance from it. Say you use a r9 390 with 4GB and one with 8GB, the 8GB might cache more information for easy access but that's not any performance that you'll see. I may be wrong here, but it's just a thought of why you'd see the 8GB cards use that much VRAM.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+ProfessorSlash Yes that's how it works in DX11 and it's probably why it's not working well in DX12. I didn't go into full details but my working theory is that the devs just cache the VRAM with abandon in DX11, letting the driver deal with it, yet doing that in DX12 leads to these kinds of issues. They'll have to get used to throwing out unused stuff better, or stop just caching everything. One of the biggest issues right now is they don't have the tools available to know exactly what is going on. AMD had tools for Mantle and probably has working DX12 tools as well, but Nvidia probably doesn't yet.

@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+Cmdr Embryo It should be a lot better under DX12 and Vulkan when done properly. There's not a lot AMD can do to gimp performance on CPUs, if a game is well-threaded it'll run better on any CPU with more cores compared to low single-core performance.

AdoredTV The fact that AMD froze development on Mantle and the delay on Vulkan pushed things back a long way when it came to software. I feel like if AMD kept Mantle going then developers would have been learning how to develop low-level on PC, which would translate to better preparedness for both DX12 and Vulkan. In any case, the hardware wasn't quite there with the features on either side (more so on Nvidia's rather than AMD) so a delay might not have been the worst things that could have happened.
@adoredtv

+ShiroiKage009 Hard to say with Oxide still having issues - I think they must be AMD's closest partner in all this. I just wonder how much this is gonna be an issue in the future with backward compatibility. I'm thinking that some kind of middleware might be useful for memory management here.

mkvsng gg Pretty much just optimization on graphical asset quality, and of course, 1440p upscaled to 4k. Either by the new checkerboard rendering or whatever in engine upscaling was used before that. In engine upscaling is better than taking a straight 1440p output and trying to use billinear or bicubic upscaling from what I've experienced. But it is not magic and is not as good as native 4k unless you're rendering 1800p minimum, more like 1920p before it's not as noticable between native 4k.

About memory, mouse, sound and grapicssupport in DOS.. it really was not that bad as you describe it. It was really a bref period when soundblaster become popular in front of adlib and when we ran out of conventional memory. Dos4GW basically solve the memory issue. Sound card was really a issue because you not only need to specifiy what kind, but also interrupt and busses... and some games had problems with some configuration... Later addon software solved this problem to. For instance Wolfstein 3D have a automatic sound card detection that work just perfect. There was also some automatic Grapics detection, but they was nearly never used. Because most game was processor intensive. By the time a CPU could drive a VGA card, SVGA was already standard.. (and SVGA was backwards compatible). At this point there was no 3D and there was almost only VGA compatible grapicscards.

+matsv201 Artistic license Mats. ;) My recollection of it back then was struggling with config.sys on a game per game basis, but sure it wasn't a disaster or anything, just a pain in the arse when you come from a "plug and play" console or Amiga/ST background.
@matsv201
@matsv201 8 лет назад
AdoredTV Yea.. it was a real struggle. But it was actually just a few games.. But it was mostly solved about 1992-1993. There was a other reason why gaming on PC was not that popular. The EGA memory interface was really buky to use.. and also quite slow.. This was a hardware issue. Also it had no sprite support (but i would say this is really a smaller problem). CGA of cause have the text 16 color hack making of kinof work. But EGA.. sure it looked good, but it was soo slooooow. I would say this was really the biggest problem. The sound card and the memory issue was also a problem early 90-tys, but it disapered quite a head of gaming on windows even was a thing
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+matsv201 I basically started using PC's around the early 90's yeah, I'd have been 15/16 at that time and started my training then, so with 286's and 386's. I think we had mostly EGA graphics but there were one or two with VGA and maybe one with SVGA. Guess which one I had lol.
@matsv201
@matsv201 8 лет назад
+AdoredTV Well back in the EGA days it was no problem because EGA was that horibly slow with byte by byte transfer so the screens was almost always read from disc. Also with AdLib grapicscard that had a driver that was very light on ram there was also no real problem When early VGA came with much faster graphics access, they often load all graphics to ram. By this time most computer had 2MB of ram, but some had only 1. This was a issue because reading from the 640kb low to the 1024kb high was really hard. So if you had a 2MB computer the coders have to chose of having the 1MB of memory over 1024kb or the 640kb of memory under 640kb shared with most drivers. Because adlib drivers was that smal as well as mouse driver there was no problem... but soundblaster become popular they used alot more driver memory. When Dos4GW came... it was basically a driver that automatically mapped the high memory to the low and it just worked. This also solved the mouse issue, and made it easer to solve the sound card issue. Then when autodetect software came available it was just not a issue any more... look at the entry screen of wolfstein 3d. There is some autodetect information. There was not even a configuration file... it just worked. The issue with the config.sys and autoexce.bat was really when people start buying soundblaster 32, AWE64 or pro that eat ram, then try to run games that was 2-3 year old from before the time of the large soundbaster cards. Also because most grapicscard and controllers start using DMA they use a lot more ports. occupying all the normal interrupts. Using non DMA old games work with no problem...... So basically games from around 1989 to 1992 that uses VGA was problematic on computers that was made about 1994-1996.... Well sure, most people was well aware of that problem in that era.. and a lot of people think of windows as solving that problem.. and it sort of is true... For example winciv was quite a lot easier to run than Civilization that was one of the problem games. But what really spawned DX was 3DFx and Nvidia. 3DFx first run on Glide, then came Nvidia and run on OpenGL... Game devs really hated it so they start develop for DX in steed ... 3DFx really didn´t live that long and bite the dust just a few years after, but it was sufficent time for DX to gain a advantage over OpenGL.. even thow OpenGL was superior at the time. OpenGL did get bloated over time. but what really kiled it was Windows Vista. Windows Vista uses DX for the desktop acceleration. So if Vista desktop acceleration was available DX was always active. This forced OpenGL to run under DX that made it horribly slow. It really was as easy to turn of desktop acceleration and OpenGL was just as fast as on Windows 98.. but nobody know that... and even worse a lot of press just claimed that OpenGL was horrible on Vista with out explaining why. This problem was solved later, but OpenGL was basicly alreddy dead by this point.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+matsv201 Yep that sounds about right. I played Civ on the ST and Amiga I think, but not the PC. Civ 2 was the first PC game I had for my DX4 around 96 and by then it was all solved, so it would have been in-between that time. I remember an issue with Frontier Elite 2 as well, that's the one that stands out. Maybe Quake as well.

So as all the ppl who knew how to do memory management either retired and/or died the new ppl are taught API management and how to work with it instead of here is 2 trillion bits go at it kind of thinking. when you get hobbyists for small PCB boards can get very good memory management to the point that they can put a text file into a 64 byte space if need be. we need game devs that can think that way. when every bit matters they can get very good performance. At this time i do not see DX12 taking off and almost everyone knows about steam. like them or hate them they know steam if they game on pc. realistically we will have to train an entire new team for dx12.2 and Vulcan to make use of low level features like that.

Do you think this would also have something to do with the R9 390 and 390x having a 512 bit memory bus over Nvidias 256 bit bus on Dx12?

+Andre Ramirez I don't think so - normally when you see minimum framerates dropping so drastically it's a "hard" bottleneck, ie just running out of VRAM and being forced to use the much slower system RAM instead. Lacking bandwidth is a much more gradual process.

That makes sense, hopefully one of these true DX12 titles will finally come to fruition to see some sort of advancement. But taking your research into account we will have to hope for excellent hardware integration through the developers now. The fear of laziness or just imperfections makes me wonder if developers will be involved with updates more heavily...

+Andre Ramirez Yeah dev laziness could well be a factor here. I think we maybe need another "Crysis" moment where one of them blows us all away with a true DX12 title, forcing the rest of the industry to adapt.

+AdoredTV Very true, there hasn't really been a true "Wow" experience in terms of graphical fidelity which has made the graphics market stale. Also looking at VR, there is no way it will not provide that level of push on first implementation to the main stream just do to cost for the vast majority of people. So I guess better thought now is when will a development inspire the market.

+Andre Ramirez Tbh it'll all come from below, the consoles. If VR takes off it'll be because of the PlayStation I feel.

13:14 *ahem* 970 has 4GB of VRAM. Is that your bias showing? Because though .5 GB of the frame buffer is slower, does NOT mean it does not exist. And Nvidia drivers, use that VRAM if needed for operations that do not require as much bandwidth in general, and even if it does store full textures that is still 32 GB/sec direct and dedicated VRAM bandwidth. And I can tell you for a fact that Maxwell, in DX11 does VERY well with low bandwidth memory - likely due to 3rd Gen delta color compression. My friend's Asus laptop has a dual core Sky Lake i7 mobile, with a GTX 950m that uses 2 GB of DDR3 with a bandwidth of just 29.8 GB/sec (I verified this by installing GPU-Z and afterburner with Kombustor) and it truly amazes me just how much BETTER it runs every game than my brother's system with a true quad core i5 ivy bridge (locked, turbos to 4 GHZ IIRC) and an Nvidia GTX 560ti - which I personally have tweaked and over clocked as far as was stable which included bringing the VRAM to about 5 GHZ effective, for a bandwidth around 138 GB/sec which is 4.7 TIMES as much! Sure the 560ti has 1 GB of VRAM, but that RAM is so very much faster, and the GPU is still slightly stronger overall. You CANNOT claim to be unbiased and then tell people the tired old line that the 970 has "3.5 GB of VRAM" when that is not at all the case, you do not explain it, you just state it as if it were straight facts. When it is not, and pretending it does not exist is provably false, as drivers now most certainly do make use of all 4 GB if needed. I'm not saying the 970 is not PENALIZED in performance when it does indeed effect performance IF all 4 GB is needed, but it still is not by much.... Otherwise I am REALLY enjoying this video, it has just really become obvious that whether you admit it or not, you are biased towards AMD. And there is nothing inherently wrong with that, I mean they ARE responsible for Vulkan coming into existence, and therefore my POTENTIAL ability to not NEED to upgrade to Windows 10 to make best use of any given hardware I may have! And I USED to be very biased towards Nvidia myself, I will admit it, but who doesn't want the hardware they bought to have been the best choice? I am trying to stay entirely neutral and unbiased about what is coming, in terms of Polaris and Pascal, as well what MAY happen when Zen is released. Though I don't feel like upgrading my CPU will really matter much at all for gaming and my usage, even if Zen becomes the new king, unless it is a total game changer, I probably will not buy one until long after they have been released, and Intel may or may not have a solid reply. But as for what IS out there, what ARE known qualities and quantities, Nvidia and AMD are pretty close in any regard, though Nvidia does edge AMD out by a little in most gaming cases where DX11 is involved, and Intel is CURRENTLY the only really viable option for a new PC, or for anyone that wants the most performance on the best platform CURRENTLY available! But as for things coming, I am eagerly awaiting the TRUE test of who has the mettle!

+Dysphoricsmile I'm not gonna give Nvidia a free pass for the shit they pull. The last half GB of VRAM is so slow it's barely an upgrade on normal system RAM.

kind of sounding to me like there is a push to go back to the days of having to program for different hardware, leading to games that only work on certain pieces of hardware. indie devs would find it very difficult if not impossible to write for, much less test on, all the different hardware. whole thing sounds to me like a push for big money to regain a stronger foothold against low budget indie developers.

with how broken games have been lately, I think devs would take even more time with dx12 or vulkan as it said it gives more options but is harder too, no dx11 hand holding is present there. so I can see many devs for a while ignoring the benefits of this new api and memory managment for continuing the simplicity dx11 had given. not saying they wouldn't switch to 12orvulkan, just saying they wont really TRY too hard to sqeez some juice out of them if even dx11 games are coming broken as hell.

+Shubhendu Singh Yeah I think most devs will avoid it until the game engines are up and running.

There's a reason not everyone dies low level programming it's a waste of time unless you need the performance of a AAA game. What's the most popular language to write code in? It's JavaScript and that thing is a massive hog. Only companies that were really dedicated to PC releases will be able to make these new Apis a good thing. The rest simply won't bother
