+AdoredTV - Hi ya, Very interesting video, very interesting indeed. I would like to ask you a question, why are there are no Laptop video cards on general sale like there are for desktops, especially since there is such a premium for them on eBay as that is the only source, even Dell dont sell GPU's anymore for their Alienware range ? So when a perfectly working Laptop GPU fails or you want an upgrade you either have to buy a new laptop or buy from eBay ? I dont understand this situation and I don't just think it is a niche market since there are lots of Gaming Laptops these days using the MXM interface ! Many might just want to upgrade their GPU rather than just purchase a new laptop. My situation is slightly more of a pain since my Alienware M17xR3 only officially supports up to the Nvidia GTX580m although with a modded unlocked bios it is capable of using a 780m and just recently the 880m and maybe soon the 980m !

+Joakim D Never bought an AMD/ATI card in my life, but the idea that they could go out of business scares the shit out of me. An nvidia monopoly would be a nightmare
@the74rrhotline
@the74rrhotline 8 лет назад
+Joakim D AMD's R&D has will soon come to fruition. They have had an uphill battle against NVidia for a while now but they are poised to take the fight to NVidia with the expectation out of an all out war. The victor - Time will tell as the single biggest factor may be who's tech is first to fall behind for the coming years. AMD is also nearly ready to re-take some respectable market share from Intel. Decent X86/64 performance and efficiency on low to mid range CPU's. The APUs will start to garner more attention this coming generation as their GAMING performance is simply impressive for such a modest cost [VS CPU and discrete GPU]. This is just my personal belief. I have been following various tech companies, products, for several years now. I also predicted about 98% of what would happen this generation for PS4 and XB1 [No wrong predictions either]. Most of it was very easy to analyze and know [THIS console gen.]. 2016+ AMD is the Phoenix rising.
@theexplosionist2019
@theexplosionist2019 8 лет назад
+Joakim D AMD cannot compete with NVidia anymore but there may be hope in making a CPU comeback as Intel R&D has been crippled due to diversity quotas.

+The Sentinel I'll let you in on that, so you can sleep. Consoles -> push for new low-level GAPI with better support for 4+ cored processors -> new processor with affordable 8 cores SKU -> APUs eating up the dGPU market from the bottom bite by bite thanks to new, more efficient graphics core (so you can cram more shader power into same watts). It really sheds new light on NVidia's attempts to get anywhere they can in addition to GPUs - mobile, automotive, HPC, neural networks. They know what's coming, and they desperately need a way out.

Instead of being a fanboy people should wish for a more competitive market where no one wins head to head, that means better technology and affordable prices because of the eternal race. I find it sad to see Nvidia and AMD as the only truly viable options for gaming, was hoping Intel would catch up at some point but that really never happened. The best thing for us gamers to have a tie between the two giants, that will make my wallet happy and yet another race for better gaming technology.
@the74rrhotline

AMDs master plan has to be APUs. Sure, Intel can probably beat them in CPUs, but no matter how hard they try AMD will always be ahead of them in graphics. If AMD can make a Zen-Vega APU with HBM2, that will be totally killer for MOBA players, light gamers, laptop gamers, and potentially even the mid-range gamer market as cross firing one of those with a discrete GPU could offer quite a bit of punch. Intel can always fight back against AMDs CPUs, but never against their GPUs.

This is why I love your content, you're informative and thorough as always where as some of these other major pc tech youtubers have gone the way of regurgitating PR info in bite size video formats that's suppose to cater to A.D.H.D audience. I mean you can argue that these major youtubers do put out some facts through their podcast, but even did it's still minuscule and more of an opinion piece, rant, or soap box. That's why you have people like Wendell from TekSyndicate overshadowing every cast of that channel, and him being invited in so many other channels for advice and opinions a lot, it's because he knows that people want more than just bite-size PR info. @cestarianinhabitant5898

I was one of the people buying AMD in 2010, the cards may have been much better on paper, but the cards were horribly likely to break. I bought a 4750, and the firts card i got was somehow broken (was freezing and artifacting and crashing seemingly randomly), exchanged it for another one, had another set of problems on that (can't remember what exactly, think it was bad rendering in some games, and weird framerate drops, and maybe some artifacting) traded that out, got the last card in the store, and I sold my used AMD spec computer so fast that I didn't get to discover what kind of problems I'd run into next. So it is indeed by no means weird that I jumped straight to fermi (500 series, and they were good, what was so bad about these cards? They were great, 560-Ti rulz) and then kepler (indeed 670, which I am still using, although I'd be lying if I said I was still happy with it, waiting for Vega). I'm giving AMD another chance now with Zen and Polaris/Vega, but believe me when I say it's only because I can't afford to be team green and blue anymore, their prices fucking suck.
@TheVoiceTalk
@TheVoiceTalk 8 лет назад
I fault Hector Ruiz and Dirk Myers. If Jerry sanders was still at the helm of AMD the products would have always been strong, after Jerry left the focus quickly switched to becoming more Intel like and subsequently we got things like Barcelona and Bulldozer. Steve jobs always said the R&D people need to run the company and that's why I welcome Dr. Su because she clearly is an R&D person (thankfully Rory recognized this when he was building his team) and if AMD can hold on a little longer I think they will gain meaningful CPU market share and thus stabilize.
@snetmotnosrorb3946
@snetmotnosrorb3946 8 лет назад

A good watch. Makes me even more proud to go with Polaris instead of Pascal. Freesync is the kicker for me. For the money I save on my monitor by going Freesync instead of G-Sync, I can get a higher tier GPU. AMD gives gamers the best experience for their money and I respect that

If there is anything we need more than anything it is a revived AMD. To adopt a mobile phone slogan: The futures bright, the futures Red. @adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+Oseyeris Intel will do whatever they can to make money and the vast majority of their cash comes from PC still, so no chance of them leaving voluntarily while that's the case. They could be kicked out of it if Zen delivers though, so here's hoping as the PC market really needs a good shake.
@19CD91
@19CD91 8 лет назад
AdoredTV I would agree with you however Intel has had a massive amount of layoffs here in Portland. There main campus is right down the road and i know a lot of people who where let go. Even the realtors in the area are talking about how Intel employees make up over 10% of the housing market here and they are preparing for this.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+Oseyeris 12,000 down from what I hear, which is a staggering amount for any company to let go. Tbh it's been coming though and Intel frequently pull the trigger on headcount in order to prevent financial losses, but never on this scale. First to go will likely be their mobile department and I believe some major scaling down of manufacturing is in order as well. Intel only ever had one plan, to remain on top in the process battle - but they ran out of money before TSMC did. Coupled with some bizarre aquisitions (McAfee for $8bn wtf was that all about, Altera doesn't look like a sound investment either), they are a company who remained ahead simply due to their enormous size. I expect a whole new world of pain for Intel over the coming 5 years as they get overtaken on process and lose a massive slice of the desktop to AMD.

you also have the AMD's Open Source plans like AMDGPU Driver for Linux, GPUOpen for developers etc, AMD is starting to show up in everything, atm they are in PS4, Xbone, Wii U, Possible NX, They also founded the basis of both DX12 and Vulkan (direct descendant of mantle)

When AMD bought ATI I really thought they had blown it all out their butts. I had given up on ati cards as just not very good. I went Nvidia. Then about the time i bought the (i think) x1600? Too long ago. I thought it was a sweet card and had so much to offer. I bought some gtx450s and sli'ed them and stuck with Nvidia until I bought a r9270x. I am now a amd man again. I have the r9 380 and am more then impressed with it compared to the 970. I cant wait thanks to an earlier video you did to see what amd brings in the next half year. Thank you for the info. Was listening to some speculation about the PS4 NEO and had a thought that's fairly relevant to this and the next vid. A while back there was chatter about AMD wanting to order silicon from Samsung and I believe you suggested that this was a sign of confidence in Polaris and/or Zen. Instead it may have been a sign of prepping to expand manufacturing options in anticipation of the PS4 NEO which would certainly go a long way to insuring AMD keeps up with the silicon purchase agreements.

@Dargonante
@Dargonante 8 лет назад
I believe you could easily expand the amount of material you can upload by diving into other components, like RAM and how this affects gaming, the way the technology is moving forward, why CAS Latency is more important now than ever, how baseline CPU Controllers affects RAM, and how RAM ultimately affects gamers. You can do these kind of videos in between your main videos. There's also SSDs, Hard Drives, SATA, SAS, AHCI, RAID. Why RAID 0 on SSDs doesn't linearly increase performance besides sequential Read/Write over SATA, the History on SATA and SAS, why don't we have Consumer SAS if it's so much better, how NVMe and XPoint will revolutionize the way we even storage our data, and how it'll basically mean the world for the war against loading screens :) Always in between main content like these videos which can make up for a Series. Also you once said Monitors aren't your strong point, is never too late to learn, we trust in you! EDIT: Bear in mind that your core audience, like me (At least I'd like to think so), is usually very interested in the technologies that AMD, Nvidia and Intel produce, which means we're more likely to have an Enthusiast mindset and RIGs, which also means we'll be showing high interest for all components that we can enjoy around our main components, CPU and GPU, if these offer any benefits, like monitors, RAM, SSDs, MOBOs, Sound cards, Peripherals, ETC... Usually, one of these components, often as important as our GPU/CPU (And even more expensive in some cases) is our monitors, which also happen to tie up with GPUs, with technologies like HDR, higher bit depth support, Adaptive Sync ETC... Just my 2 cents :D AdoredTV

The 5850. What a card. I tried getting my hands on one of those when they were released but had to settle for a 5770(Only card in the series in stock for months). In fact, i'd say part of the reason why AMD didn't command a higher lead in market share was because of how little supply they seemed to have for the HD 5XXX series of cards. My 5770 still runs to this day and still does moderately okay in some newer games. Safe to say the 5XXX series of AMD GPUs really put AMD on my radar. Plus. ten years ago -- and still to a small extent now -- those images on the GPUs really added to the excitement of unboxing and seeing the GPU. Didn't AMD have a mascot, AMD Ruby? Whatever happened to her... And Bulldozer... Man, that really put the nail in the coffin for AMD CPUs for a lot of people. Personally, I just won't look at an AMD CPU at all. They had a good marketing point with their futureproof sockets(AM3+ I think?) and backwards compatibility but when your current gen chips don't come close to last gen intel chips there's nothing that would have you waste money on it. It's a shame too because their Athlon X2 CPUs were the best bang for your buck and powerful enough for years to come during the dual core age of CPUs.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
+Larry Smith I almost ran a video of Ruby at the end. ;) My 5850 was broken so I ended up with Crossfire 5770's for a while until I got it back. I still have one here in my gf's daughters PC, running WoW pretty well lol.

Radeon 4770 etc were also good cards (if a bit rough around the edges heat / noise wise) which put AMD in a good place and were a good thing for consumers as they helped drive prices down. 6950 / 6970 were competitive too, especially the 6950 with its unlockable shader cores through bios update :) Hopefully Polaris will be a success and help to pull down Nvidia's current ludicrous prices.

amd 4000 series and 5000 series was a perfect storm for Nvidia. The market share climb of AMD started well into early 2008 not Q1 2010. They where way below in market share before the,. similar to their current levels. They where on a steady climb since the launch of the 4000 series.

The face that I am an avid Linux user, AMD supports Open Source a lot better than NV, is a big plus to me. L/Xubuntu 14.04 LTS using VDPAU Open source Drivers via oibaf PPA is great!
@jellowiggler
@jellowiggler 8 лет назад
Nicely done. That's a good bit of commentary. Well researched, with a reasonable conclusion. I'm looking forward to part 2, and what the future brings to AMD. You can see that their whole graphics architecture has been tilted more to bandwidth for higher resolutions than Nvidia's has. I think they planned on having more resolution to deal with a few years earlier than what actually happened. Same with DX12. You can tell that they built GCN with the 'new' APIs in the pipeline to service their new hardware. But they have been delayed for a few years. Now 1440p and 4k screens are coming down in price and the game consoles have ensured that APIs for multi-threaded uses above 4 cores are somewhat well known. The end game may be coming for AMDs CPU and GPU plan. The console games that have been designed for GCN are about to be written on PC in the same manner. We may see an AMD renaissance soon! Zen and GCN 1.4. We need some competition in the market to increase innovation and lower prices for sure. PC has been stuck for years. Finally new processors, new graphics, new lith processes, more cores..... this could be GREAT. ADD: I come off as an AMD fan. Not really. I just want competition. Intel has been actively slowing the market for years. You can't really falt them though. Their un-innovative processors have still been outperforming AMD in every way for years. I want an equal split to keep everyone honest. Even 60/40 or 70/30 would be OK. Intel has a 90/10 or better right now and AMD needs to grab some back. It's a good thing mobile took off in the ARM direction or Intel would control everything.
@adoredtv
