For my latest woodworking project, I decided to build a wood (IPE) case for my Starrett Dial Caliper! To keep the caliper in good working order, it is important to keep dust and debris off of the long rack gear in the caliper. I always keep my Starrett tools in their original boxes, but to go along with the heirloom quality of the tools, I wanted a create this wooden box to match this particular tool, since I use it all of the time. I didn't want to use magnets for this woodworking project because it attracts metal dust, exactly what I want to keep away from the caliper. That being said, I would have to guess that no one will read this, and the first magnet comment will get pined to the top - enjoy this project build!

Few facts: 1-I avoided magnets to avoid metal dust in MY personal shop. More than wood here. 2- i used epoxy to keep the build moving along. Five minute epoxy. Not 20 hour PVA. 3- the top is not warped. It is touching the bubble on the dial. I took off too much material flattening the wood that surrounds the caliper I did make a dimple in the top after the video. Also the reason for no felt. 4-this is not a sponsored video. 5- the giveaway is not mandatory if it gets you upset ignore it. 6- thank you for the love and support over the last 9 years ✊🏻

Regarding #1, I used tiny rare earth magnets to keep my caliper box closed. A case of personal choice. Nice video.

Omg, the people that get upset at other people's contribution to the collective good will never cease to infuriate me. I know I don't have to tell ya, but keep doing you, Jimmy. Never have to explain nor defend yourself to those of us who love ya.

The upset folks may be as soft as the felt you didn’t need. Thank you Jimmy D. For the project using hand/power/automated tools from your shop. I don’t have them all but appreciate the examples so I might do the automated parts by hand some day or just appreciate the advancement as I’m not in production more than a one a one off.

Exactly. Back when you could figure out exactly how something worked by taking it apart with a socket set and a couple of screw drivers. I'd say it was so you could easily access anything if you needed to fix it, but back in those days things were built to last. I sound old. Get off my lawn!

Beautiful box & so time saving and efficient to have a clear, instantly recognised place for valued tools to live. No magnets is so right too, my MacBook air MagSafe power connector attracts near invisible steel filings/grindings and these stop the connector seating and I have to clean them away with sticky tape regularly. Thanks for sharing!
