Beautiful Dirleton Village & Dirleton Castle, lie around two miles west of North Berwick in East Lothian and are about a 30 to 40 minute drive from Edinburgh city centre.
As well as a lovely church, Dirleton is home to one of Scotlands best castles, Dirleton Castle, which dates back almost 800 years to the late 1200's. The castle belonged to three different families over the centuries, the de Vauxs, the Haliburtons and the Ruthvens. Each family altered and extended the castle to their own tastes and needs, until it was finally abandoned after Oliver Cromwell's soldiers damage it beyond repair in the 1650's. The derelict castle was purchased by the Nisbet family in 1663, who built and maintained the castle grounds as a beautiful pleasure garden. In 1923 the castle was bought by the state and is now cared and looked after by Historic Scotland. The castle gardens are famous for having the longest herbaceous border in the world. Dirleton castle is a big favourite with families and one of Scotland's best kept secrets.
I can wholeheartedly recommend combining a visit to Dirleton Castle with Yellowcraigs Beach which is just a few minutes away by car. If you have time, it's also worth a visit to North Berwick itself, which has lots of great shops, cafes and restaurants, not to mention another spectacular beach.
