Join me on a trip out to the beaches of East Lothian where I discover some hidden gems I had no idea even existed! East Lothian is famous for its stunning coastline, fine beaches and world-class golf courses. But what I find today is a little less ordinary! Did you know about these treasures???
Filmed at Aberlady and Dunbar beaches (with a wee peek at Dunbar Harbour) on Thursday 24th March 2022.
Hi, I’m Steve. I am a travel reviewer and post my trip reports here on RU-vid. I pay for my own travel and produce my own videos. If you have any questions about my journeys or travel advice in general, please drop me a comment - I do read every single one. I’d also love to hear any recommendations you may have for future content, or why not challenge me to try something a little out of the ordinary! If you are looking to collaborate on any type of project, I’d love to hear from you - email me your ideas and hopefully we can work together in the future.

This was fascinating! You find the best unusual places. That is an incredible beach. Those last shots of the Bridge to Nowhere are just beautiful and I’m looking forward to seeing more of Dunbar. As for the submarines, whoever was aiming at them certainly hit the target! There’s not much left, but I’m surprised there’s anything left at all and that people haven’t taken pieces for a souvenir.

Another fascinating and rather eerie video, Steve. These X craft were developed for clandestine operations in WW II, the most famous being the operation against the German battleship "Tirpitz" at her anchorage in northern Norway. Two were lost (one with her crew) while being towed across the North Sea. Two the Craft ( and perhaps third which was lost, managed to lay their charges, carried like "panniers" on the sides of their hulls, which damaged the ship enough to keep it in its fjord until the RAF Lancasters of 617 Squadron finally sank her using bombs designed by Barnes Wallis in 1944. They were also used in the build up to D-Day to stay submerged off the invasion beaches and carry out surveys under cover of darkness. One example of a complete X craft is preserved in the Royal Naval Submarine Museum at Gosport, a memorial to all those brave souls who operated and died in these craft.

Sorry pressed the button by a mistake. I loved walking the beaches in EL they are so beautiful and go for miles. Miss the big tides, in Adelaide they go out 20m max. I try telling the people here that the tide goes out for ever, they don't believe me . Love the history bit . Love your dedication ,it helps expats like me attached. Am coming back for a holiday in July and will definitely be doing that Dunbar walk. As i said before wowwow Steve !!! Am a Musselburgh man living in Adelaide South Australia miss all this but you're videos keep me up reminding just how stuning the place is. Its amazing how you can live in a place thinking that you know everything about the place but don't even know half. Love your work. Please keep it up😊😊😮😊 Keep on doing what you do cheeerrrzzz Derek

The beaches of East Lothian are stunning together with all the history and the characteristic deep red sandstone so typical of the county. Slightly east and along the coast from Tantallon Castle lies a smallish but beautiful private beach called Seacliff with its tiny harbour cut out the rock. You pay around £3 to go through a barrier, I and previous girlfriends, wife and daughter have spent many happy days there over the last fifty years. Incidentally it's where I want my ashes scattered once I've finally shrugged off this mortal coil !! 👍

That's the type of submarine the Royal Navy had built for attacking the battleship Tirpitz in Stavanger Fjord I think. Sheer death traps! 🤯 Here and there you'll find such bridges here in Germany, just without the tide. They are just remnants of road building projects that weren't finished. 🥳 Lovely bits of earth! 🤗

Great find Steve! The X subs famous for their role in the attempts to disable Tirpitz of course! The engine used in the original X sub prototypes were Perkins diesels, made in Peterborough. But the production version for the war years swapped to a Gardner brand engine, before Perkins were chosen to supply the engines for the last x models in the 50's. Perkins was my former employer for 15 years, and there was always pictures on the walls of the historical stuff.... There is a lot of X sub relics at IWM Duxford museum too.

Sorry for the long reply. Your great video may have a local connection to my home town of Huddersfield. Thomas Broadbent and Sons Ltd, a Huddersfield company, helped with designing and actually built the X20 Midget Submarine. The X20 was a very well safeguarded secret and had been developed from its predecessors over the last couple of years. Following its completion, it was disguised as a large Motor Boat, with tarpaulin and framework put all around the Midget Submarine. It was then transported under armed escort to Hillside Railway Sidings, Huddersfield and taken north to the River Clyde where she was laid down. X20 would play a significant role in the D-Day Landings, acting as a key navigational tool for the incoming ships. This was done with the Submarine lying off the Normandy Coast from the 4th of June up until the Landings on the 6th. The Submarine had to remain undetected, along with its compatriot, X23. It would be interesting to know if the one you saw was X20 or X23, other X Craft were also involved on an attack on the battleship Tirpitz. In 1970 I spent 7 months in hospital after being as passenger in a nasty car crash, a patient in the same ward worked on the X20, his injuries made him incoherent, although at times he did mention X Craft, sadly died.

@@steve-marsh A bit more research and you are correct that the two mini subs were used as target practice, they were in fact XT -Craft used for training for actual X-Craft.

Nearly didn't watch this one, I don't know why but wrecks really spook me, I can't look. Glad I saw the bridge though & lovely shots at the end with the boats. Dunbar looks lovely. Nice little video, thanks

If I lived within 20 30 minutes, I'd be to either Aberlady or Dunbar every weekend. I am a warm blooded creature, so it may take time to adapt to the northern climate. You folks have some serious North Sea tides. Whaling Boots, good thing you had those along. Video subject / location (perfect), video length (perfect). I did see the Star's and Strip's proudly waving by the way near John Muir. Someone made Alicja very happy post Poland trip. What a sight to see and a place to hang out.

That’s some trek to reach the submarines but it looks like a really nice beach. The bridge to nowhere is totally mad !! There is a X-Craft sub at the IWM Duxford. It has been split near the aft end so that visitors can view the interior crew compartment and the engine compartment. If I remember correctly, the Diesel engine is a Perkins.

There's quite a bit of WW2 stuff around there, Steve. Across the road from where you started there was an army camp on Gosford Estate - some of which is still standing; not to mention loads of those concrete anti-tank blocks lining the main road... If you don't know it, have a good wander round Gosford Estate actually - and look at Gosford House itself too; as half of it is actually derelict if you look from the landward side! That's the new house too - the old one is where the stables are now - at the opposite side of the gardens; which might help you make better sense of the gardens - and don't forget the boathouse on the main pond, which appears to have many more islands than it actually does... Gosford House is stuffed with some of the many art treasures of the Earls of Wemyss; and has a lovely square hall that's entirely made from marble - alas, it's only very rarely open to the public. Worth keeping an eye open for, though. Oh, and a wee tip about Dunbar: the Central Cafe... Apart from their excellent fish teas and even greater ice-cream sundaes; there are old black and white pictures on the walls - including one of the old open-air swimming pools... Look at it now and you'd never guess it existed in a million years! You passed it on your walk into town, by the way...!

Fantastic Paul. cheers! And always love a fish tea, so that'll be on the radar next time :) The only time I was in the grounds of Gosford was during the Edinburgh marathon, so I don't have good memories of it - that was around halfway :D

Stunning video, Steve. Many thanks. Just kept on giving: the atmosphere of the walk out, the wrecks themselves, beautiful Dunbar, the shout out to John Muir, and that gorgeous bridge to nowhere (reminded me of the flooded train ride in Spirited Away), and your affable enthusiasm. Thanks again.
