I didnt like dirt rally. I found it far too inaccessible. I wanted to pretend to be colin mcrae without the game reminding me every turn that im not and never will be. This sounds far better, and i can act out my rally driver fantasies far better.

This is just what I was expecting, a more accessible version of Dirt Rally's handling (the numbered Dirt games always have been arcady to some extent). I can't wait to pick it up, however I'm a bit dissapointed in the content, mainly locations variety. Procedural track generation is good, but we're going to see the same 5 locations all the time. I understand the fact that the game made by Big Ben holds the official WRC licenses, however I feel there are not enough locations to drive in. Old CMR games had snow, red sand, dirt, gravel, tarmac, the whole variety you need in a rally game. Even Dirt Rally has a good variety, even though it's lacking in locations as well. Still, I'm itching to play this as it's a more polished and higher budget Dirt game than Dirt Rally was.

Great review. I have been playing this one for a bit and I love it. I find certain areas of the game to be more, and less challenging. Like, World Rally Cross in the cars? Crank it up. But when you get in that little buggy thing? Total write off for me. Short Course trucks? Touch and go. Sometimes I'm a train wreck.

Awesome! I'm so glad you reviewed this, and that the devs had enough confidence in their game to make the review embargo BEFORE the deadline to get it 20% off for humble bundle subscribers. The only thing I was hoping you'd talk about, but didn't, was the amount of Rally vs Rally Cross in the "campaign". I didn't expect much when "Dirt Rally" was in the HB monthly sub because I'm not super into racing games. But then I played it and realized I very much prefer the "rally" type of racing with no one else on the road, time trial-ing, and being okay with coming in at 2nd-4th place a fraction of a second behind the driver above me. Since there's no obvious huge F-ups in Dirt 4 I'm going to go buy it now, and hope those pop-up issues on PC will get ironed out.

earlier in my evening i stumbled upon your dirt rally review, looking for dirt 4 reviews, and as i said on that page, i'm glad i did, since i hadn't completed much of that game, wondering if i should still get this one, because i'm a ps4 guy, and i also wanted to get Wipeout Omega Collection. i didn't really wanna purchase two games at the same time, and your review of dirt rally actually got me back into that game. ha. so, i wanted to thank you for your honesty, especially when you said, (to paraphrase, because i know it's not verbatim) "at times i kept asking myself if this was really made after dirt rally"... and that sold me on the fact i chose not to purchase dirt 4 at this time... BUT, because you said it's a buy, i know i will... eventually. :) thanks for covering every aspect of the game. much appreciated.

Advanced blending, Like in Dirt Rally, Is an different and precise rendering of transparency effects. Including tree's, Fences etc, etc. As you pointed out, It is very demanding, I have no idea why they put it in the mainstream game tbh. Cheers for the review!

Got the game. Soundtrack is top noch. One of the tracks has been my ringtone for about 3 months lol. I'm on Gamer settings, Champion Difficulty. Man it is such a tension-filled experience. Good work Codemasters although I'm not too keen on the graphics, I think Dirt 3/Rally take the cake in that department.

I really like the random track generator. In real rally you don't get to race the same stage a billion times and memorize every part of it.

Didn't even know this coming out, now I just need to get some money, I really enjoyed Dirt rally but it did get super challenging for me. This game looks amazing and almost exactly what I was looking for.

Feels like they have tried to appeal to both casual racers and sim racers but havnt commited to either. Dirt rally = hard core simulation racers = small market. So they try and go down the middle but I think they havnt gone far enough. Dirt 3, 2 and the original, it was memorable and awesome because of its extreme sports attitude, gymkhana, stadium circuits, battersea compound. Even the dashboard mascots and traveling the world via the trailer menu gave it style. Dirt 4, dare I say it, looks like a recycled, accessible dirt rally maintaining solely the WRC feel which won't appeal to many. Still can't wait to try it and hope the FISH school is decent 😀

Nice review. Probably one of the most articulated reviews I've heard. Very very nice. Accurate and honest.

A lot of people keep saying that Dirt Rally is the more hardcore, realistic physics simulation. While it was definitely a bit tougher to control your car in Dirt Rally, it didn't have realistic weight and aerodynamics modeling like Dirt 4 has. That means DR had cars that felt more floaty, and every race was a constant battle to keep the car on the road since it was constantly sliding all over the damn place. D4 has more more realistic physics modeling, and the "extreme" grip the cars have, believe it or not, is more realistic than in Dirt Rally. One thing I saw in a stream from the devs is that they got a ton of time working with rallycross drivers to dial in the feel of rallycross racing in D4, however their time with rally stage drivers was more limited during the end of development, meaning they didn't get as much professional feedback to help perfect and dial in the physics and feel since the implementation of the aerodynamics and weight of the cars. He also said that the drivers they did have specialized more in modern cars, so the modern cars have a much more accurate feel compared to their real-life counterparts than the historic cars, since they had little face time with drivers who had tons of experience driving them. Just something to bear in mind. Finally, he said that they'd definitely like to further refine and fine-tune the physics and feel of these cars, but when (and if) they do set out to do it, it won't be a quick patch to fix things. It will be a longer process, with lots of feedback and research to get things as accurate as possible. So hang in there, it will only get better. Not that it's bad to begin with! And as usual, killer review, Karak! I can't stop recommending you enough to people who mention they're getting tired of crap reviews on the major gaming sites. Keep up the fucking excellent work.

Ah so many memories of playing dirt showdown in 2013. *I look at the dirt series*... WHAT THEY HAVENT MADE A SEQUEL!? WHAT THE HECK IS DIRT RALLY ANYWAY!?

I've just started Dirt Rally - it felt strange, I could hardly keep the car on the road (and I was very good at McCrae 2) ... but then, I switched off all of the traction, ABS and steering "help" ... and it felt just right - dangerous, as usual, but I felt in control of my own mistakes. Even in my shitty 1960s Lancia (what a heap! lol). From this, and other videos, I get the impression that Dirt 4 is not in any way a successor to Dirt Rally - but an improvement on Dirt 3. Even in "sim" mode, it's not as accurate as Dirt Rally but was never meant to be. Hence why it's "accessible" even in Sim mode. Dirt Rally was a way of testing the water for Codemasters - to see if there was an appetite for full-on Rally sims these days. It was very successful. (I'm loving it, especially since you start with only enough credits to buy a 1960s lemon - and progress, even by just finishing a rally) But their next project was always going to be Dirt 4 - so they added some of what they learned from Dirt Rally into that. I'm still hopeful that they might consider a sequel to Dirt Rally - and keep both series going. As I am definitely more of a sim kind of guy. Dirt Rally is definitely the worthy successor to Colin Mcrae 2. I like the idea of the training academy in this game, though.

Thank you for the great review! Might have to pick it up. Dirt 3 didn't do it for me at all, and Dirt Rally, although great - didn't have that "pick it up and run a quick, fun, race or two feel". It was more of a "need to have a solid hour or two of pure commitment and high anxiety feel". My only real disappointment in the Codemasters race games lately is the absence of Toyota. To me, nothing has yet compared to back in the day playing Colin McRae 2005 in the Toyota Celica GT-Four ST185.

Is trailblazer back from Dirt 3? I remember it being pretty damn fun, just taking crazy Pikes Peak cars on a what was essentially a rally stage (albeit not as complex). Also man that music sounds good, can't wait to hear the rest of it!

It's weird, Dirt Rally really punished you if you tried to take a corner too fast. this one looks like you can take any corner at almost full speed without any issue.

From a consumer and full-time gamer this is the ONLY game I have ever pre-ordered. As we all know, just because the game is released, that doesn't mean it's a finished product. Give it up to Codemasters for doing great work and that ass puckering your seat racing experiences. Nice review from a new sub to your channel, looking forward to catching up.

Great review as always. Using the Thrustmaster T150. The game recognized it right away, no fucking around. Adjusted the FFB a little and feels great. Im already looking up bands from the soundtrack lol. Can't wait to get back to it tomorrow.

I'm sad there's no stunt course like Battersea Compound in Dirt 3. It was a lot of fun to mess around in with a buddy or after completing everything else. It reminded me of Rush 2's stunt level. Still looks like a solid game.

By the looks of it the personality of Dirt 4 is neutered when compared to Dirt 2 and Dirt 3.

That thought that this came after Dirt Rally, is exactly what ive been thinking. Dirt Rally looks so much better polished. the rain effects, lighting and environments are better. When i see the Wales tracks side by side, its very obvious, i hope they improve it after release.
