Thank you for always making SIMPLE videos. Glad to see you using your own brain as well instead of always trusting manufacturer specs, that's how I know you're a good mechanic. I love the common sense specs you always deliver! 3 finger rule, no ruler or sag tools required, you're awesome!!!

You put tension on the chain to insure the axle is taught against the axle blocks, that way you know you are getting a true measurement on each side of the wheel.

+BikeBandit thanks, quick question just in your opinion which oil (Honda specific) is the best oil to run in the transmission side of my 2002 honda crf450r
@bikebandit
@bikebandit 8 лет назад
Hey DB, Not sure. I used to own a 2003 CRF450R and I never used the Honda Oils in either the engine or the trans. My current 450 gets full-synthetic from either Bel-Ray or Motorex. Lots of great options out there.

Ricky was so good because he started early as possible thus he had more riding experience than everyone else at the end of his career. I also think that him being on the small side caused him to train harder to compensate for his small stature. James Stewart & Travis Pastrami got early starts as well. Stewart was the fastest rider I have ever seen race to this day.

Where are you measuring your caliper from? Obviously the bolt but to the inner rim of the tire or what?
@kukko83
@kukko83 7 лет назад
You don't "measure a caliper" from anywhere, caliper is a measuring device. He measured the distance from the back of the adjustment block to the end of the swing arm. Don't know why he refered it to as a micrometer though, that's a totally different device altogether.

Didn’t think you need to measure. Just need the notches to be the same spot on both sides
@TheDesertsweeper

@@kylemcnab927 those notches can wear and/or are not precise, requiring visual alignment. I have had three people argue over whether it is aligned to a notch, or not.This technique is more accurate, or use the tape-to-swingarm-pivot method.

BikeBandit Yeah sorry, maybe I should of explained it better. On the throttle (took out the grips) and unscrewed and then released the cables. Inside there was full of this stuff, but I am guessing it's grease?
@bikebandit
@bikebandit 8 лет назад
+Leonardo Monteiro Hey LM, Gotcha! So within the throttle cable housing, you found this gray goop. Yup, that's grease. If it has thickened up, clean it all out, and just re-grease it. Don't go too crazy though. Remember that grease doesn't necessarily attract dust/dirt, but it will hold it once exposed to it. If the bike tips over in the dirt, you'll always have that dirt embedded in the grease. Dirt/dust finds it's way everywhere, like inside the housing, under the throttle tube, and around all of your controls. Hope this helps. BB.com!

Hello Murdo, Grease is not recommended. You should use motorcycle specific chain lube. If you don't have chain lube you can soak your chain in motor oil. However motor oil tends to fling off quickly and attract dirt.BikeBandit has a whole assortment of chain lubes. Check our our website or give our customer service a call at 1-888-339-3888. They would be more than happy to help you out.

@bikebandit
@bikebandit 9 лет назад
Micah Ortiz Hey Micah, Remember that WD-40 is not an oil, it's a solvent. Solvents break up rust, but are actually too thin to protect metals. Use something a bit heavier to lubricate and protect chains. WD-40 has it's place in the garage, but not for use as a lube. Thanks for the comment. Ride safe out there.

Hey how many fingers if the bike is on it's own weight?
@bikebandit
@bikebandit 8 лет назад
Hey GL, Not meant to be measured that way. Bike on stand, swingarm at full extension. Best thing to do is read your owners manual, and it will tell you exactly how to measure for your exact machine. Some bikes have linkless swingarms (older KTM's) and their measurements are different than say the newer KTM's. Remember that a little too loose is better than a little too tight. Thanks for watching our videos and the question. You're a subscriber to our channel, right? Ride safe. BB.com!

That looks like 3 fingers of looseness. One problem with spraying chain lube at the rear is getting over spray on the rotor. I always clean both rotors when I'm finished with the bike. Amazing what comes off the rotor. I soak my chain in old motor oil. The longer the better. It gets in everywhere and lasts and lasts. But I always have chain lube. Esp at the races.
@cbeharry68
@cbeharry68 9 лет назад
Trav wouldn't the contaminants in the old motor oil get in between the rollers and cause premature wear? Soaking it sounds good but I'd think it's better in some clean lube
@TheHypnotstCollector

deonte halliburton So you pull on the lever, and it feels stiff? Perhaps either replace the cable or if it's in OK condition, maybe it just needs a bit of lubrication? What is the bike, what year, what size, etc.?

@bikebandit 9 лет назад
deonte halliburton DH,When was the last time you installed a new cable? A new one will run you right about $20. If the cable is fine, perhaps it's just dry in the sleeve? Lube it up. How are your clutch plates? Worn plates wouldn't necessarily cause your lever to be stiff, but perhaps they're at the end of their life, and thus the cable itself just needs to be adjusted to compensate?
