Baby's dad couldn't have done the abortion as abortions were illegal at that time. And he would have lost his licence. That's why they were done illegally often by people who weren't qualified. Glad you enjoyed my favourite dance movie

Abortions were illegal in NY until 1970. Poor Penny had to have it or risk a back-alley type abortion. Baby’s dad wouldn’t have done it for her, but he’s a class act for not reporting her and for saving her.

A music heavy film but not a musical, which you now know. :) But speaking of musicals, Baby's father was the voice of Lumiere in Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast. "Be our Guest". Swayze songs and co-wrote ",She's Like the Wind." He was also a highly trained dancer before acting. Jennifer Grey was the sister in Ferris Beuller. The male singer in "I've had the Time of my Life" started as half of The Righteous Brothers back in the film's time period. Not a great film, but a fun one, Xanadu starring Olivia Newton-John. Her musical follow up to Grease. (Unrelated film) The soundtrack to this film was so successful, they put out a second soundtrack. Apparently, Patrick and Jennifer didn't get along. The one time it showed was the scene where she kept getting tickled. Neither of them were acting. He was genuinely annoyed.

I'm going to disagree with you about the pacing of the second half: the story is not only about Johnny and Baby. It's about Baby and her relationship to her father, and how this summer changed that. You need to travel with her through her falling out of favor with her father, watching her sister take her place, and her feeling of displacement in her family; and her confession to Johnny that she doesn't believe the things she used to. There is another element, in which which she and her sister find a moment of recognition and love that wouldn't have been possible without what happened before. And you need time for this; you need to understand what the relationship was, and how it affects both father and daughter when it falls apart: to lead up that scene between the father and daughter where both cry but don't connect. There is a reason that "Baby is in the corner" and that Johnny comes to her rescue there, as she did before. You don't get any of the wonderful payoff to this without watching what happened before. This is not a musical, or a comedy: it's a coming of age story, and it isn't Johnny at the center: it's Baby.

Ah Ollie, it is just so telling of the times you have been born into that it never even accrued to you that 1) Robbie had no intention of ever acknowledging that baby even existed much less wanting to keep it and 2) that abortations were extremely illegal doing that time period and therefore extremely dangerous also.

Classic, sexy movie. 😎 👍 The "Cry To Me" love scene has been voted one of the sexiest movie moments in cinematic history. Fun Fact: The very famous scene where Johnny and Baby are practicing their dancing and they are crawling towards each other on the floor wasn't intended to be part of the film; they were just messing around and were warming up to do the real scene, but director Emile Ardolino liked it so much, he kept it in the film. Bonus Fact: The song "She's Like The Wind" was co-written by Patrick Swayze with Stacy Widelitz and sung by Patrick Swayze himself.

I don't know if you realize that abortion at this time period would be considered illegal, which is why Penny ended up in some shady place in the first place. Also, Her father probably could have lost his license if it was discovered that he had any involvement in Penny's abortion, and why he probably responded the way that he did when he found out that was what his money went towards. You should check out the Center stage franchise and the Step up franchise. Some of these movies do show the downsides of trying to get into performance art as a career even if you are talented.

I was OBSESSED with this movie as a kid. I'd literally watch it, rewind and watch it again back to back - which is funny because I was only 5 when it came out! Definitely not a kids movie 😂. I always would like twitch when she did the first twirl on the last dance - guess I wanted to be a dancer at one point? Fantabulous (fantastic and fabulous) is an excellent way to describe it! As badass as that moment when Patrick Swayze jumps off the stage was, I think I heard in interviews that he injured his groin when he did that - ouch 😫.. he sang that sad song where he leaves Baby in the dust. Also, Lion's Gate Films is not named after the bridge, they are both named after the two North Shore mountain peaks called The Lions. That's why Vancouver's CFL team is called the BC Lions as well. I did not watch the movie, but heard the soundtrack on the radio (Time Of My Life, She's Like The Wind, Hungry Eyes) and I used my birthday money to buy the soundtrack on cassette. About a month later, my mom and younger sister saw the movie and kept borrowing (stealing) my cassette. I've watched a dozen reactors gush over Patrick Swayze and never mention Cynthia Rhodes. So it's always Swayze and "his partner." Rhodes is a jaw-droppingly accomplished dancer and you'll see why, if you watch "Flashdance." The women love the sexy Swayze and he's also a guy's guy, so Rhodes resides mainly in the "Swayze's partner" category; so just giving a callout! And, if you watch it, you could shake off the "tree" image. :) I'm like a tree too, but it's the enthusiasm, right? :)

I forgot that Jennifer Gray is in red dawn as well. I'm only the 4th comment I don't know if anyone said it yet but even though they seem to have great chemistry on screen Patrick and Jennifer pretty much couldn't stand each other.

Why are they remaking all the classics Patrick was in, I think that is so distespectful towards his legacy. His memory should be kept alive, and his wonderful movies shouldn’t be replaced by poor copies of classics like Point Break or Roadhouse. Always watch the original!

In cinemas in my country title of this movie was "Wirujący seks" ("Swirling Sex"). After years tv stations started broadcasting this movie with original title.

Jennifer Grey is the daughter of Broadway legend Joel Grey, who just recently died. Joel was one of the stars of Cabaret. After this movie, Jennifer had extensive plastic surgery and her nose doesn't look the same at all. Abortion was illegal at this point, she didn't want her father involved in a crime. Baby's father, Jerry Orbach, is also a Broadway star, as well as one of the stars of the original Law & Order.

About the bootleg abortion, the guy had a dirty knife and a folding table, and they paid him hundreds of dollars to do it. They could've done it themselves. Heck, Baby could've pulled the baby out herself and saved hundreds of dollars. That's like things I've seen as a man who works in technology. People have told me they pay a guy $80 to dispose of their old computers. I've told them I'll do it for $40. LOL. I take the old computer and use the parts in it as replacements for future clients.

Yeah, that's probably what I did when I first saw this film. Put a teddy on my lap, for obvious reasons. LMAO. Sorry, couldn't resist that one. I was quite into Jennifer Grey growing up. As for the log, I wouldn't recommend dancing on one. Patrick Swayze injured his back falling from that one during filming. Incidentally this film was released on the second day of the Great Storm of 1987 in the UK. October 16th. Fastest recorded winds on the British Mainland ever. Still stands I believe. I could keep digging my mind for all I know about this film but there's a Wargames (1983) reaction to get to.

Hi. Great reaction. Please react to the director’s cut off Little Shop of Horrors (1986). It’s a fun musical set in the early ‘60s with fantastic songs.

I'm suggesting THE CAR starring James Brolin for a movie reaction video. A demon possessed car that kills apparently just for kicks, set out West in the 70s. MUCH better than it sounds.

I was watching this yesterday and thought it is sad how most young people nowadays have little patience and shorter attention spans because that’s what things like TikTok and fast-paced action packed films will do to you eventually. No one has the patience to sit down and calmly enjoy a story unfolding anymore; if there’s no action for a period of five minutes, they’ll already start yawning and fidgeting. No offense here, Ollie, I don’t mean to say you are like that, it’s just something I’ve been observing with a lot of young people, and something that always comes to my mind when I hear them complain a movie moves forward too slowly. The first part of this movie was building towards the dance performance. The second part is about the dynamics and relationships between the characters, and their development. You cannot rush through that, it needs a bit of time, otherwise it’d be unrealistic. I was surprised you didn’t notice it was Patrick’s voice when you commented on how good a song ”She’s like the wind” was. Otherwise great reaction, I like that you take the time to review the films you’ve reacted to at the end of each video.
