I love this movie too. It's my favorite Batman movie of all time. It is now 30 years old now and it still hold up.

Max Schreck was also the name of the German actor who played Nosferatu in the original silent vampire film. In German, Schreck means terror.

The newest Batmans don't kill people, Tim Burton's Batman is just pure badassery, he doesn't care as long as he takes care of the bad guys.

Michelle did months of whip training and actually did the mannequin scene herself in only one take! There's a behind the scenes video showing her film that scene also on youtube. Also, she actually put the bird in her mouth. Between her talent, beauty and taste, she's my favorite actor of all time.

When I was a kid, a friend of mine saw the Penguin death scene and told me about it. He spoiled the ending to me and told me the Penguin died "drinking paint" which completely traumatized me in concept alone. He was referring to the fake blood, and thought it was supposed to be paint. The idea was disturbing and I was traumatized because of HIS interpretation of a visual effect. Funny how a kid's brain interpret stuff

When I was a boy and this movie came out I was OBSESSED with Michelle’s Catwoman. The best performance.

Lovely, wonderful reaction to a favorite Batman of mine. FYI Max Schreck is actually named in honor of the actor who played Nostferatu, a Dracula-based character, in the great silent movie, "Nosferatu". Christopher Walken is a little normal compared to the other two, but his villainy is so much more voluntary; and Walken, of course, brings his special energy and enlivens Schreck in a way no one else could.

The story about Burton making (or not making) a third one is complicated and you should look into it. But one takeaway is that Burton later regretted not using Harvey Dent in this second film, and had intended to use him in the third, and even did a hand-drawn sketch of the potential Two Face. It would have been Billy Dee Williams, with the scarred half of his face being pure white.

To answer your question believe it or not Tim Burton wasn’t allowed back for the third movie because McDonald’s felt the tone of the second was so dark that they couldn’t sell happy meals. When he didn’t come back then Michael Keaton didn’t come back either. Billy Dee was supposed to come back in the third but since they changed a lot of things they decided to recast him as Tommy Lee Jones.

My nostalgia movie. It makes me feel all cozy inside watching this movie still after all these years. I have seen it countless times. I remember when i was a kid one of my fathers friends had Batman Returns on VHS and i used to borrow it from him literally a million times. Well not literally a million but certainly many MANY times. Now as an adult i can imagine him thinking "dang this kid again? Go away ffs!" xD

There was originally supposed to be a third film in the series. However, Burton had lots of issues with the heads of the studio. As someone else already mentioned, The Penguin didn’t come off marketable for Happy Meals and as a figurine, in general. Burton didn’t care about those things as much as creating the images he had envisioned. To this day, Michelle goes down as my favorite Catwoman. She still knows how to handle the whip, as she posted it in her Instagram and she even held that bird in her mouth for 10 seconds. Talk about a dedicated actor.

I like that Keaton’s Bruce Wayne is so “normal” compared to the others (that I’ve seen! Haven’t seen the new one yet). Like when he’s not Batman he’s just some rich guy. The exchange between Bruce and Selina talking about his past girlfriends was so awkward I love it

It's hilarious to me how much Danny DeVito's Frank Reynolds character is just him calling back to the Penguin.

By the way; Michelle Pfeiffer actually did learn to use the whip. so that scene of her in the department store was all her! And yes; there was supposed to be a third movie, where Billy Dee Williams was to play Two-Face. However; due the much darker tone this movie took, McDonald's was upset, and refused to release the Happy Meal toy line they had originally set up. So; every though the movie did well, WB wanted a lighter movie for the third film. Burton and Keaton both left the project, and Joel Schumacher was brought in. Even though Batman Forever did well; it was dislike by fans of the Burton/Keaton verse. I; for one, was not a fan of Schumacher's time with Batman, and found both films to be a dark stain in the Batman Universe. Batman and Robin was considered so bad; comic book movies would disappear until the X-Men in 2000. As for Billy Dee; he would get his change to finally play Two-Face, in the animated LEGO Batman the Movie, starring Will Arnett. It was the role he was promised to play; when he sign on to play Dent in the first film.

Generally, Batman DOES have a code against killing in the comics, though there have been versions that do kill. There's a little bit of a story arc to it in these movies, as you'll see in "Batman Forever."

Yes it was a life size car they built - as in 1989. It was 6 tonnes and had a max speed of 35 mph as it was so heavy - but it was real. It's in a museum at the moment.

Okay; correction. Ann Hathaway played Catwoman in the Batman Raises movie. Pheiffer didn't want to 'squeeze back into that cat outfit' again; because she was offered the changed to do a stand-alone movie. Hence the train wreck we got. One of the reasons why Keaton left the role; was the fact the studio wanted to continue with the multiple villains. For which; Keaton felt his role at Batman was become less then what it should be. After all; this is a Batman Movie, not a Batman Villain movie.

"Batman's whole thing is he doesn't kill people." While generally true, it didn't start out that way and he has had some more violent runs over the years. One of my favorites is in Batman beyond when an older Batman gets overwhelmed and has to use a fallen gun from a defeated foe to save himself from being overwhelmed by thugs, this event makes him realize he has finally reached his limit and must retire from being Batman. Outside of that Batman has had a significant body count over the years. In his first appearance in Detective Comics, he killed a guy by knocking him into a vat of Acid, the guy did not survive or smile afterwards, batman even called it a fitting end for him. In Batman #1 he hung a mental patient from the neck and flew him around under the bat-plane as Batman says, "He's probably better off this way." He's stabbed, shot, burned people alive, sealed people in a room and left them to die, snapped their necks and more. I guess you can say it is more of a guideline than a rule.

This movie is madness. Definitely enjoyable in the right mood, but when I started reading the actual comics and saw the animated series shortly after this came out, I was amazed at how different Penguin and Catwoman were.

As far out as this movie is, there's no supernatural stuff going on with Catwoman. In reality she'd have died from most of what happens to her but this is a Tim Burton movie. He doesn't really work in reality. BTW, Pfeifer actually learned how to use a whip and really put a live bird in her mouth for those scenes. She's my absolute favorite in this.

Great reaction. This was Tim Burton in full flow, the imagery the cinematography the camera work the haunting visuals. The themes of wearing masks was most prevalent in the scene where Bruce and Selina didn't wear a mask at the costume party, because that is their real mask. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was the GOAT, unbelievably iconic performance. I think Batman and Batman Returns are complete genius and the best batman movies ever. I love Michael Keaton's Batman. I think you are onto something with it not feeling like a Batman movie though- rather than a villain movie with Batman chasing after them.Even the opening credits was Penguins origin story, I'd have liked the film to focus more on Batman's character than simply reacting to the madness. That's my only criticism in an otherwise iconic movie which I quote to this day and it's a movie which is actually getting better over the years and viewed upon more favorably. As for what happened with the third movie- WB and the producers were unhappy at how dark the movie was, and they were more concerned about selling McDonald's happy meals as McDonald's didn't like it's dark themes. So when Burton went into the meeting to pitch the third one, the studio basically told him to be a completely different director and make it more colorful and commerical, Burton saw the writing on the wall and stepped aside which he's still unhappy about to this day, especially with how Schumacher butchered what he built. WB tried desperately to keep Keaton and offered him crazy money but Keaton sat down with Joel Shumacher, hated his new campy plans for Batman and knew it would be a disaster and he stepped aside also. Atleast we will always have the first two movies, and I will pretend the other two doesn't exist lol. Great Video though, you provide good analysis.

This movie is what happens when you let a director do whatever he wants and he has a bunch of crazy, disturbing ideas in his head. And for that, I love this movie. Until the most recent one, this was my favorite Batman movie.

The scene with the bull-ship and the clothes mannequins? Check the BTS - she actually did DO that - with a whip. For some STUPID reason they cut off the top of the frame - but Michelle Pfeifer did actually decapitate them all in one shot as we saw.

FYI Over the years (beginning in 1939) Batman has killed a LOT of people. He even packed a gun for a while. I don't remember when the "not killing" thing was first introduced but it was more a guideline than a rule.

I've only just found your channel, but I'll say this: if you love Danny Elfman's work, look up 'Darkman'. It's a dark superhero movie made in 1990, directed by Sam Raimi of 'Spider-Man' and 'Evil Dead' fame, starring Liam Neeson and with a full score by Elfman. In my opinion, it's some of Elfman's greatest work, and the movie itself is seriously underrated. It's got a great concept, good acting and a solid gothic-horror atmosphere. Cannot recommend it enough if you enjoyed this kind of film, or at the very least, the music.

The Tim Burton Batman films have a lot of humor in them, but they were considered VERY dark after the campy comedy of the old Batman TV shows, which was most people's experience of the character at the time. Fans were initially upset that Keaton was cast because he was primarily known for his comedy movies. After seeing the trailer, fans were relieved at the much darker tone. Not everyone liked even this much darkness. I think Adam West said he wasn't a fan of the Burton films, and Batrman Returns was definitely too dark for Warner Bros. Gritty and dark doesn't have to mean humorless.

When this film came out, Warner Bros lost a lot of merchandising deals because of the violent and sensual content which was why the next two films were more light-hearted,family-friendly and comedic with Burton being replaced with Joel Schumacher as the director, Burton being demoted to producer and his ideas for a third film which was to have Michael Keaton(Bruce Wayne/Batman),Billy Dee Williams(Harvey Dent),Pat Hingle(Commisioner James Gordon),Michael Gough(Alfred Pennyworth) reprising their roles and Marlon Wayans as Dick Grayson/Robin being quickly scrapped.

There was meant to be a third tim burton movie but he went off to try to make superman 5 with Nicholas Cage (yes, for real) but that didn't pan out - so he became just the Producer for Forever.

This movie is super silly. Catwoman is a cat burglar, she has no super powers or supernatural origins in the comics. Penguin is not a mutant or sewer freak, he's just a regular dude gangster with a 'Penguin' nickname in the comics. Many of Batman's rogue gallery are just regular people (with a few exceptions). Otherwise, it is indeed a fun movie. 😎 Fun Fact: Danny DeVito refused a stand-in for the scene where the Penguin gets pelted with rotten food by an angry mob.

I believe that there was supposed to a 3rd Tim Burton directed Batman movie starring Michael Keaton as Batman. I think it's because Michael Keaton didn't want to do it because he lost interest in the role and character of Batman/Bruce Wayne. It was too bad for us Tim Burton with Michael Keaton as Batman fans because I wanted them to make another one especially because of the way that this movie Batman Returns ended with an open ending and no complete closure. I like both Batman and Batman Returns but I like Batman Returns a little more because it has more action and I like Michelle Pfeifer's Catwoman: acting, costume and lines and her ambiguous nature as a character. It was Anne Hathaway who played Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy not Sandra Bullock. Good reaction and observations/analysis.

There was going to be a third Tim Burton’s Batman with Billy Dee Williams returns as Twoface. But Parents were piss because it was very dark Return and McDonald’s couldn’t sell toys.

The movie didn't happen because part 2 did well but it didn't do as well as 2 because parents complained about the movie being to dark and adult (the sexual references). The penguin was considered to disgusting for kids. McDonald's couldn't sell there toys. Burton was asked to step down, which he did even though he stayed as a producer. Keaton was upset Burton was let go but was open to doing part 3 until he read the script which he thought was to kiddy. So he stepped down

After the success of the first movie, the studio gave Tim Burton more creative control of this movie, i believe at Burtons request. That's why this movie is more 'Tim Burton'ish'

Danny Elfman (who will turn 69 on the 29th of this month---May 2022) was the leader of a New Wave band called Oingo Boing that appeared on the scene in 1979. You seem to enjoy stirring film scores...I urge you to check out their work.

Still the greatest Batman film of all time. 89 was a masterpiece, but Returns managed to surpass it! And after sitting through the miserable, boring and Alien 3 somberness of The Batman 2022, I'm ready to watch Returns again this weekend. Too bad we have to wait until next year to see what happens next in The Flash (since Batman Forever and Batman & Robin aren't canon to the Burton movies anymore).

Because of its dark imagery, sexuality, and lower box office, Warner Bros. decided to go in a different direction without Tim Burton. He is credited as Executive Producer on the third film, but he didn't really have much to do with it. The next two films technically take place within the same continuity, but they couldn't be more different. The production designer on the first film, Anton Furst, committed suicide not long after that film's release. So Bo Welch was brought in to expand on Furst's concepts but in a more exaggerated, Burton-esque way. The script is much funnier than the first one, and distinctly more American; there are a lot of jabs at American pop culture of the time, twists on common political catch phrases, etc. It was written by Daniel Waters, who also wrote the AMAZING teen black comedy, Heathers. You should definitely react to Heathers! It has that same twist on American culture.

Burton & Keaton = Best Batman

Michelle Pfeiffer is wonderful in this role. There are a lot of versions of Catwoman but this is one of the best. DeVito's is a gruesome penguin. A third Burton movie would have been awesome, especially if there was another Catwoman story. But I think some corporate politics made him leave the franchise.
