I saw Dirty Dancing for the first time just a few years ago at a local drive-in. They played it as the second show in a double feature, the first movie was Grease. I had my pre-concieved notion of Dirty Dancing that it was a silly romantic comedy about a girl who learns to dance. I was not expecting the abortion subplot, my jaw dropped when they first started talking about it, and there's a particular line after the event happens when someone says the doctor did it on a card table with a rusty knife that had me surprised. It was such tonal whiplash.

I have never seen this movie before, but was well acquainted with the plot due to cultural osmosis. I had absolutely no idea it took place in 1963; just assumed it was set in whatever year the movie came out.

The plot and themes of class in this story were so over my head when I was a kid. I didn't understand the significance of The Fountainhead (Never read it) until I was in my twenties and learned about Ayn Rand.

Deb brought such a great energy to the basement, I hope she comes back again soon! Also, I totally agree with the assessment of Across the Spiderverse. People hyped it up like it was the best thing to ever happen, but I thought it kind of stunk! The art direction was all over the place and SO DISTRACTING at times, and the ending cliffhanger could not have been handled worse. Woof!

Fantastic episode! I loved Spiderverse, especially for the voice acting performances and animation, but totally agreed on the ending being frustrating. I get that it's a three-part story, but the part one movie had a proper ending! Stick with doing one or the other imho.

I 100% understand the plight of having VHS tapes and feeling like you can't part with them. I've sold a fair amount of mine over the years, but there's definitely a select dozen or so that were such a big part of my childhood that they get a special spot on my shelf. I don't even own a working VCR anymore, so I'm keeping them purely for the sake of having them. I'm sure I'll probably be buried with them.

Deb needs to show up more often. Trivia: Swayze's mother was a professional dance teacher which made him already have the skill set. Him and the character are kind of similar in that they're both skilled but his mom was always hard on him and the character is lacking in his own ways. Swayze recalled the actress as being moody during the film and requesting constant retakes at times.
