Things aren't always picture perfect when boondocking or dry camping. In this video, we struggle to find a free, wild camping spot in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area that isn't covered in trash!

Happy to report it’s gotten a whole lot better! We just recently camped in the Stewart Point area and while there was some trash, it wasn’t trashed out like in this video. We always pick up what we can, and try to leave the site better than how we found it.

I am a local and would never do anything to pollute our lake and land ! So sorry that visitors have to share experiences like this ! There are no reasons for it other than some people are idiots ! I wish we could catch and brand the idiots who do this stupid stuff so everyone would know who they are !! I visit the lake at least once a month year round . In the winter I trail around in my truck on land and in the summer I'm on the water in our boat - either way I always pick up an extra piece of trash or two before leaving ! There are organized trash removal events , but I have yet to be able to participate in one - this makes me want to go out and do one !

We try to pick up what we can, however it can be overwhelming in a area like this(party zone). Everyone needs to pitch in a bit.

It's a bit misleading to suggest this situation accurately reflects the overall condition of the entire Lake Mead NRA. Understandable conclusion, given what you saw but what you found is unusual for the park and hopefully has been addressed.

What a shame! Thanks for the information. Hopefully we will make it out there before the entire area is trashed. Keep the videos coming! The good, the bad, the ugly. As always, safe travels!

Was there a few years ago and it was even worse. The beach was covered with trash, looked like people would buy a cheap travel fishing rod from Walmart and take it down to the beach in the packaging & just throw the plastic and cardboard on the shore then leave fishing line all tangled in the trash. It’s hard to imagine. Stopped by the Lake Mead ranger info center and asked about it but they said the budget had been cut so tight that there was nothing they could do.

Lake Mead used to be great back when I was a kid but not anymore. It has been a stay away area for me for years now. Next time you’re in the area, there’s great Boondocking in many areas near Vegas, here’s a few - on Mormon Mesa out by Overton, Telephone Cove near Laughlin (right next to the water), above Goodsprings (a lot of wild horses there) or on the way to LA, in Ca off Cima rd there’s a small new campground at Horsethief Springs N of I-15. You’re welcome 👍🏻

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'd love to see Lake Mead get cleaned up because it has so much potential

Then people will wonder why it gets closed down. All the public lands near me have been fenced off for the same reason. Now nobody can enjoy the outdoors. First time viewer, well done!

Why did you just complain about the trash and then leave? You should have gathered it up and burned it or hauled off or buried as much as you could have

You should Send this video to the state and the city that Mead is in. tell them you are posting online. I wrote to the National Parks service with a link to this video. What a disgrace .

I was there a few times and the trash is off the chart. I know it is our responsibility to keep our camps clean but if there is a huge trash problem why isn't it being cleaned up. Every person that goes in there gets charged. Use some of that money and plz clean it up and campers, please, please, please grow up and pick up your garbage!!!!!

Yup. Trash, trash, trash. Everywhere. On almost all public land we've camped at there's been trash like you wouldn't believe...and sometimes feces. You try to look past it to the natural beauty...but so heartbreaking.
