I once made an adult cry tears of joy by answering in character (accent and all) when I was cosplaying Jester. It was weird but awesome and at the last con before the pandemic
I can't say I *disappointed* a child. But I had a funny experience? I was dressed as Rena Rouge (Miraculous Ladybug) and a little girl came up for a photo. We took one. And then she goes "You're the badguy!" And I said "Oh no, you're thinking of Volpina! Don't worry! I work with Ladybug! I'm a good guy!" And this little girl kept DEMANDING I was Volpina and she was gonna tattle on me to Ladybug 😅. It went on everytime she saw me on the con floor and everytime I had to tell her I was a hero! It was honestly really funny everytime. Not sure if it would have been BETTER to be dressed as Volpina or not LOL
I've never really cosplayed a kid-friendly character, so I don't have anything that completely fits the bill, but there was one incident during my first con, when I had been adopted by a Bleach crew at the convention. We, as a group of about 20 shinigami, decided to trek over to the Mall of America to do a little window shopping, and maybe take some candid photos, you know, the things broke teenagers and slightly less broke 20-year-olds do. One of our stops was to a Gamestop on the third floor. About five of us were sitting outside the shop, looking over the balcony, when we noticed a small child of about 5 or 6 on the second floor opposite us. We all waved, and this kid's expression was simply awestruck. Not even a minute later, his mom notices us and yanks him away from the balcony, nearly yelling that he needed to stay away from us and that we'd steal his soul. 15 years later, I still laugh about the absurdity of that interaction, and hope that kid's doing alright.
Huh, is that something you encounter often? People being weird about cosplay, I mean? Coming from the south I've definitely encountered it myself, but I've always figured the northern states would be less judgy about nerd stuff
@@wesleypatterson2989 keep in mind that this was back in '06, when the idea of groups of people walking around in costume was relatively unheard of. Also, a bunch of people in flowy black robes smiling at her child would scare any mildly religious person. Not saying she was religious, just that there's an option. Also, the idea that the north is "less judgy" is not entirely accurate. Most of the time it's just not as overt, more passive aggressive than anything else.
Now one wonders if the mom was saying that because she watches the show too or because of other reasons. Was a Grim Reaper standing behind the group of young adults cosplaying as anime Grim Reapers?
Even flipping gender identities for characters that are popular for kids you can be called out. I often dress up as female Chat Noir (Adrien, not Marinette) and always have kids run up to me for pictures. I always get down on my knees and let them pose with my staff. It is very cute! I call them little heroes and tell them to watch out for Hawk Moth.
The first time I cosplayed in public I was dressed up as Rikka from Love, Chuunibyo and Other Delusions. I was wearing her outfit from the beginning of the show, which is a dark blue lolita dress. At one point, a little girl was so amazed that she came up and interacted with me. Even though she had no idea who I was supposed to be, she still wanted to talk. It was so cute, and I will always cherish that moment.
@@caniscos8396 OMG, that's so cool. She's one of my favorite characters. That cosplay no longer fits me, but I have her school uniform and I'm just waiting to get the skirt altered to wear it. Good luck on your cosplan! 😄
It's probably the eye patch. Kids are awed by eye patches because to them only pirates wear them. Or you're pretty. Children are generally more open to attractive people. Speaking of experience, I scare kids away by just existing. LMAO I made myself sad.
@@hunterkiller1440 I mainly think it was because of the eyepatch. I really don't think I'm that attractive, and I definitely looked worse 2 years ago when this happened. Also, your comment about your appearance makes me feel sad. I'm sure you look great. We're all just more critical of our own looks, because if we weren't we'd be narcissists.
Gotta love that one con where I was dressed as Weiss Schnee and a little kid thought I was Elsa. With a sword. Kid: You look like Elsa... 😯 Me not knowing anything from Frozen to say: Oh yeah I do! I never thought about that...
I had the cutest interaction with a little girl at a convention. I was cosplaying Deirdre from Fire Emblem Heroes (a very obscure character to a lot of people) and this girl walks up to me with this awestruck look on her face and asks “can I take a photo with you?” I say yes of course and then she immediately follows it up with “do I have to pay?” 🤣 No sweetie of course you don’t!!
So far, all of my cosplays have been of DanganRonpa characters or from animes so I never really thought of how kids interact with people in cosplay. The only interaction i've had with a kid is when I cosplayed Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service & a dad asked for his daughter for a picture with me.
Wowww... Interacting with children (while you're cosplaying) is really tricky. I guess that's a good reason to learn some acting skills and maybe watch previously some episodes of the cartoon you're cosplaying from (in order to know some quotes, how to be in character and how to think again as a kid). The moral of the story : don't let your inner child die. Nice story, Anya. 👍
Years ago, I was cosplayed as Merida from Brave and with my friends we were walking outside of the convention and suddenly a little girl ran to me and gave me a hug before going back to her parents and waving at me. That was the cutest thing that happen to me while I was in cosplay ^^
A number of years ago I took our little Granddaughter to her 1st (Kumori) Con. At one point she saw a Disney Princess who she recognized (and I didn't). We had practiced and Granddaughter did her polite intro of herself and asked for a hug and picture. The Princess was "right on" and after all this she gave Granddaughter her Tiara and told her she was a Princess too!!!!!!! (Turns out Princess was on her way out.) Well, Granddaughter is our Princess, but then she really believed and told everyone (including the cousins she stayed with while I was at the RAVE) that she was a real Princess!!! Planning real Kumoricon 2021 (online last year) with 11 year old Granddaughter! 😋😊
This reminds me of a time I was dressed as hero Rey at an event at my local fandom store for either May the 4th or Halloween. I was chatting with the store owner when a little boy came in & excitedly yelled "it's Rey!!". I am not a kid person, & was caught really off guard by the enthusiasm of this little guy, I don't think I even said anything to him, just smiled & laughed. Luckily the little boy was not phased since he was surrounded by Star Wars cosplayers & merch, but to this day I feel like I should have reacted in character or said something about SW or SOMETHING lol!
I have yet to dissapoint a kid, but I have made a kid cry while cosplaying Gamzee from homestuck. It's one of the worst feelings in the world even with knowing that I couldn't have avoided it given I never interacted with the kid
I've never cosplayed a character that's super popular with kids, but I did manage to make a group of 3 kids very happy. They were all cosplaying and looked a little bummed. Then I said to the one girl who was Sailor Moon "Oh! It's Sailor Moon! I love your cosplay!" and she lit up. I then saw her friend and said "Oh hey it's Hatsune Miku! She's my favorite Vocaloid" and then she lit up. Then there was the brother of Sailor Moon. He wore an Attack on Titan cape and so I said "Aw cool, I like Attack on Titan too!" and so all three kids smiled and it makes me so happy that I was able to make three kids smile
I'm not sure if this was your first time cosplaying such a popular character but to me it would have been so nerve-racking to cosplay something that literally spans multiple generations like that. I have a feeling I would have been just as socially awkward if not more in those moments as well.
Perhaps a popular character that's mute would be the go to for those with social anxiety like us. Maybe Gromit from Wallace and Gromit would be perfect.
This was actually really informative at the same time being a funny story! I’m cosplaying cat noir and i probably will be at some future conventions, and miraculous is a show that is big with children as well as adults and teens, so i should be ready to be a suave confident kitty in front of kids who may think i’m the real cat noir XD
The 5 creepy guys who met her in conventions and got turned down. And now they're going white knight in the comments while secretly disliking her videos.
Daphne actually looks like a Daphne without over sexualizing her. I love this authenticity. Edit: I never said I hate oversexualized Daphne costumes. I never compared any other cosplayers to her. I am merely complimenting the style of her screen accuracy. Nothing more. Nothing less. Stop projecting. r/whoosh if you didn't know the beginning of the sentence was the joke because being so obvious is stupid. Unless you're telling me cartoon Daphne is oversexualized then... my bad.
Hey just a note, regardless of reasons why someone chooses to cosplay more modestly or not, complimenting someone’s cosplay by comparing it to other cosplayers, especially in a negative way, is not actually a compliment.
@@hunterkiller1440 Except that’s not what you said. There are ways to compliment the accuracy of a costume without commenting on how other people choose to cosplay a character though. You didn’t have to say anything about “over sexualizing” the character. You could’ve just said “I love how accurate your costume is,” but you chose to add “without over sexualizing her.” That means that even at a deeper level, you’re still comparing her to other cosplayers.
Didn't dissapoint a kid moreso a professional character at Disneyland. It was Star Wars Nite at Disneyland where they empty out the park for this exclusive night event. I loved cosplaying and did it every chance i got, but i wasn't too knowledgeable about star wars. I jad barely seen all the movies for the first time and couldn't tell a stormtrooper apart from a clone trooper... i was dressed as Han Solo (cuz he seemed cool) and they had a Boba Fett taking pictures with guests. My partner insisted i go interact with him as it would be "perfect for everyone to see". As soon as i walk up to him (attempting my best to look cool and collected) and he says "I'm surprised to see you in one piece Solo, however i can make arrangements to fix that." I panicked and just gave a really awkward chuckle, posed and awkwardly walked away. To this day i replay the interaction with different things i could've said like "How's that Jet Pack workin ol pal?" ;-;
Kids reacting to some of my love live costumes has been pretty cute and funny. Cinderella hanamaru: Little girl came up to me wanting to see a princess. bokutachi wa hitotsu no hikari Eli (post transformation) : I got asked where my wings were.
I love how you turned these experiences into learning experiences! And I love how much you care about the kids! ❤ I think you're amazing and I love your videos!
I actually planned ahead for cosplaying as kids characters so when i went as princess luna from mlp i was ready, which actually paid off cause i was at a con once and this little girl was so excited to see me. I managed to stay in character the whole time and she got pictures with me and it made my day cause she somehow believed i was the real princess luna. It was the best!
One time there was an outdoor movie night thing happening near-ish to where I live, and the movie was Labyrinth. The one with the goblins, not the fantasy-horror one with the Pale Man. I decided to go in my Jareth cosplay since I freaking _adore_ being in that costume. There was a couple with a maybe 2-year-old kid who was dressed as the baby Jareth kidnaps, and they wanted a picture so I did that. Either this kid has no self-preservation instinct or I am inherently not threatening, because he stuck to me for almost the entire movie. It was highly amusing. Tiring, but highly amusing!
i really want to be able to interact with small children in cosplay, but none of my major cosplans(and current cosplays) are from child friendly shows 😭 the only thing i have is my little sister(7) hyping me up, but it’s not the same😭 i just wanna be seen as the character, you know?
I really want to interact with children in cosplay too yet I don't cosplay anybody who I think children would like. Do you think a child would come up to me with me in my future fairytale renegade type dude with a big bushy squirrel tale and ears?
I don't have many cosplays from medias with younger audiences but I'm going to avoid cosplaying characters from those types of medias at cons since I'm really bad with children
I want to cosplay some princesses and such but I’m too afraid to cuz of children. They make me uncomfortable and I don’t know how to talk to them or deal with them. One time I was Anastasia and a kid kept stomping on my dress and another stepped on it causing the tulle to rip.. I haven’t cosplayed a Princess since- I honestly really.. dislike how if you cosplay a princess or something you’re expected to cater to children.. like unless it’s a birthday party or disney or something, someone dressed as a character shouldn’t be expected to be perfect with children.. Not everyone is great with kids, like myself.. I just wanna cosplay Ariel without fear agh T-T
I can relate to this I mean I come from a different standpoint. I guess it counts as cosplay 🤷. I do mascots for hire for children's parties. I did a party as Minnie Mouse, it was a full body costume so I couldn't talk I had one child who started investing and started asking me why I wouldn't talk because I talk in the show. My assistant was pretty good at diverting the kid's attention but eventually get investigation went further, thankfully it was close to when I was gonna desuit. I didn't have to worry about "the magic" being ruined for other kids.
I had a friend who cosplayed as ball Anna from Frozen & while she was chillin in a corner smoking a cigarette thinking nobody would be aware, I believe a kid either wanted a pic with her or was excited to see Anna. My friend said it was pretty embarrassing, a kid seeing Anna smoking haha
One time I went to an elementary school "winter dance" as Elsa so kids could take pictures with me. It was kind of last minute because I thought my friend would take the opportunity (she's a way better Elsa) so I wasn't super prepared. One kid asked me if I was the real Elsa and I just said "no I'm uh.... one of her secret sisters" because I was worried they'd realize it was two different people if my friend was able to volunteer for the next school event >< The next event didn't happen so I should've just said yes D:
yo! video idea! you could have other people submit funny stories etc. and you could react to them! id love to hear lots of awkward/ cool/ funny experiences haha
