Hi, Scott, the covering start is looking good! On my SE5a, I started by 'sanding' between coats of exterior grade acrylic latex house paint, but later dropped the sanding step. The three 'flat' finish primer coats adhered very nicely to each other without sanding between coats, and while I thought the color 'satin' topcoats would also need sanding, it turned out that was not needed either. I noted that the house painters typically do not sand between coats. If the finish were true "Gloss" then sanding might be needed, but the paint component that makes the finish 'flat' or 'satin' apparently leaves a rough surface for the next coat to adhere well. Dropping the sanding step also saved money on sandpaper, lots of time and reduced back strain! When I started painting, I tried to "force" a cure by blowing hot air from a space heater over the just painted surface. This actually SLOWED THE CURE RATE and left the surface sticky for a long time, days to weeks. Luckily, it dried eventually. I think the blowing hot air made the surface layer of the paint cure, but this then locked in the lower layer of the paint - so that the water vehicle could not easily escape. Thus, I simply adopted a liberal application of TIME between coats: if the instructions said two hours to touch, I waited a whole 24 hours or longer, if the instructions said 4 hours to recoat, I waited a whole 24 hours or longer. This worked well, and the coats dried much more quickly. I used this approach with painting roundels and insignia also. Take home message: you can't spell paint without patience! Of course, a heated paint booth might behave differently... and that might also make a nice little experiment! I hope you were able to get to the video about painting roundels. I've tried to attach it below, hope it works... I'm looking forward to your next installment! Good luck! John SE5a ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qEbbZqhemhc.html

Something I've learnt from this series is 'Don't buy a kit from Airdrome Aeroplanes'. Their quality control is atrocious. I hope Scott gets some recompense for the welding needing to be redone, cockeyed fittings & other bad parts supplied by them. He must be down quite a few hundred AU$ by all this.

G'day Matt..., Yay Team ! A funny thing about Rib-Tape, mate ; Up until about 1915 no Rib-Tapes were Pinked..., because they were all Hand-Frayed - for 1/4 of an Inch along both edges... My understanding is that the Frayed Edges blended in without any hard sharp lines along them against the "drumskin" of unsupported fabric, and was "better" at transferring Airloads from the Fabric to the Ribs & the Leading & Trailing & Tip- Edges... As the Production numbers rose after the Fokker Eindekker Scourge, they invented Pinking-Shears to cut that Zigzag Edge on the Tapes to Mimic the effect of a poorly-paid Seamstress painstakingly hand-fray 19:54 ing the edges...; but Pups and Camels were right on the Transition... To be "period correct" as they say, either tediously Hand-Frayed by pulling out all the unwanted outside "Warp" Threads while leaving the "Weft" Threads where they are...; Or, get Straight-sided tape & visit a Dressmaker's Shop to buy a pair of Pinking-Shears, to cut your own properly Pinked-Tape..., or Buy the expensively made Proper Stuff, Pinked in the Factory with a Hot Disc Zigzag-Roller, presumably, and a rolling Plattern to feed & cut against... The shoddy Shite supplied Would Technically Do the job... Structurally; But it would forever look like Krap. As Bill Moyes put it, When it comes to any kind of Business, the Yanquis have NO Mates, Not at all, not ever. Every party to every Deal they ever do is Always and forever trying to Gouge a bit more Profit, at every turn... And "Never give a Sucker an Even Break...!" In terms of Snooker and Pool-Hall Hustlers, is an Invocation inciting Cheating wherever Possible, to make every Deal "Sweeter"... Apparently the US Population (potential Market) is considered so huge that nothing said publicly by any one Disgruntled Customer could ever possibly put a dent in their Corporate Reputation or projected Sales... And so the ritual incantation, 'Caveat Emptor !', ("Buyer BEWARE...!", in Latin)... is such an inherently culturally and traditionally inculcated Normative Way to approach Life..., That it might actually be considered, "Un-Patriotic" and "Un-AmeriKan", to do any Deal with anybody - Particularly any Non US CitZen..., Without at least TRYING to Rip them off in the Process. And, a customer halfway around the Planet...(?) ; "Don't you ever let a Chance Go by..., Oh NO...; Don't you ever Let a Chance Go Bye...!" As they say In the Excited Status of Norte ArmedmeriKano... Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

@@guff3163 G'day, Bravo ! That's the best response yet, to my attempting to explain why I sometimes find it impossible not to emphasise conversational points by either throwing in a Couplet, or Resorting to Blank Verse... Phonetic spellings with precise punctuation can be fun, too... I never paid much attention to such things until recovering from a Downwind Takeoff in an Ultralight Motorglider ; involving a fractured Calcaneus (when the Fencepost entered the Cockpit & hit the Rudder-Bar...) and Headbutting a flat plate of tempered Aluminium hard enough to break Glass in the Mk-8 Flying Goggles I was wearing with the olde-timey leather Flying Helmet... The 1992 Concussion was atop a 1975 Skull-Fracture which had ended my learnings in Mathematics Classes at age 14..., and while on Crutches I read a Bookshelf full of Time-Life's collected "Great Works Of Australian Literature"... And "Such Is Life..." by 'Tom Collins' (Joseph Furphy) Had a BIG influence - being basically one big long intricately written fractally Internecine Segue, employing deliberate "Mis-spellings" and very intense punctuation to convey the Dialect employed by (& underlying cultural Mindset of ) his Characters. So as I was rewiring my Left Frontal Lobe, for the second time in 20 years, kinda thing ; I went wallowing in Phonetically expressed late-Victorian Australiana, and I started as a 1961-vintage only child of the Town's Odd Couple, in Glen Innes when inland Regional NSW Country Towns were functional Social Black Holes where Time flows more slowly - and setting up the local Museum was my Parent's hobby when I grew up... So I emerged thinking and writing in a mixture of Olde Colonial Vernacular, and 'Strine(!) Henry Lawson hybridised with Paul Hogan, kinda thing. And in 1996, when I'd been living at Skeleton Creek for a year, I commenced to bubble up and overflow with what I thought were Bush Poems... Until I published a book of them under that title and started getting thrown out of Bush Poetry Competitions. Apparently Lawson and Patterson's Legacy has Bin-Captured by professional Comedians whose position was, more or less, "I hope you're not going to do any of that Political Shit..., I want the Audience smiling and laughing and happy and ready to tap their toes to the rythm and try to guess the next Rhyme...; I don't want them to be THINKING About History and Local Massacres and Deforestation & Erosion & Salination & Desertification..., And all that Shit...! So you go out there and Tell them a funny story...!". So it emerged that his big Schtick was a yarn about a pair of geriatrics on their Wedding Anniversary, remembering what it was to be young and horny... Thus I realised me To be A Forest Poet, Instead....(!). Banjo Patterson and I were both born on the same day in February, both in a "Chinese Year of the Ox", so we're both "Ox/Oxen" as the Buddhists might say ; both Left-wing Dypsomaniacal, Environmental Activist Poets writing about the Australian Landscape...., which is a bit weird. Maybe every 12 years in May Australian women Conceive a Crop of Poet's, All born the Following February...; And, then, Some of us Notice the ability to Rhyme Lots of the time. And some of those pick up on the terms & conditions of a Poetic Licence. Engraved on Anodised Metal, mounted on varnished Wood, pocket-sized (the better for Busking), my copy states ; "There are 3 Excuses to Tell the Truth a Public Place...; 1) If You're Mad, 2) If You're Drunk, 3) If You're Poet...". The Engraver was tired, maybe drunk too, it was 23:15 on Sunday night at the Tamworth Country Music Festival & I'd spent 3 days at $180/day in the Hat, thrown by Rednecks tapping their feet & trying to guess the coming rhyme In the next line, As I illuminated what a horrible bloody mess we The EuroPeon Colon-ists have made of Oz, This past 250 years... (!). I put in about 7 years doing that. But not long after I started, Oz elected Flak-Jacket Johnny The snivelling Coward (Johnny Coward is an Evil Hunt {!} ), And with his Busyness Migration Visa he imported a massive Bolus Dose of Refugee Rich Whaite Sooth-EffriKaaner "When-We's"..., Enticed here, specifically in order to bolster the Ruthless Selfish Moneygrubber Vote, the better to turn the Nation which applauded Paul Keating's Redfern Speech..., into the White Christian Nationalist Rump attempting to Contain the Ethnic Tensions within the now over 50% of the CitiZenry Who have no Parents Or Grandparents who were either Born on this Continent, nor Born to anybody who was born here. On this currently collapsing Dysfunctional Delaminating Decrepit ruined remains of what used to be very A lovely Country within which to grow up. Even when I was young, One could readily see What used to be Before the Sheep & Potato Brigade Colon-ised EVERYTHING which they failed to fully Underconstumble, at their First ignorant arrogant and hubristic Glance. So..., yeah..., I do tend to Break out into Poetry, Expressing myself in the Threads...; Even when talking Aeroplaneology. Some people are puzzled, some enjoy it, some hate it ; and I figure they can read it as slowly as they like, using a dictionary if that helps - but I'm not ever goanna live up to the Expectorations of any Dimdamdumprik who thinks to communicate in TextSpik, using Spiel-Korrecticalising Software and Predictive Text as well...(!). I might be a pedantic cantankerous old Toothless tasteless mangy-looking Recovering Zombie, but that all sort of goes with the Job. When qualifying as The Fool On The Hill, happily enough I already had the title-deed to Hill on which I live - with my doorstep being Vertically-superior to every Ridgepole for 15 Km in all directions...; in a Stringybark/Box/Wattle Regrowth Forest - which I've run as an Endangered Species Sanctuary since 1990. I'm here because in 1978/'79 at Olde Bowral Airfield I used to be the Grass-Aerodrome version of a teenaged Tarmac-Terrier, working on the Aeroplanes under supervision in exchange for Flying Lessons. I used to be allowed to try to position the Propeller on the (Transavia) Sopwith Pup Replica's Armstrong-Siddley Gennet-major's Engine before the Pilot wound the Starter-Magneto, but it took more experience than I possessed to get it to actually start. I played with the Fokker DR-1 as well, and 2 Tiger Moths, a Piper Cub & one of 2 Hornet Moths...; but I always wanted a Camel. I would have done it entirely in Aluminium & Pop-Rivets, with the Original Aerofoils, a Rotax-377 reduction-driving an 8-foot diameter Propellor at 5.6:1 ; with Lead Weights on a Steel driven Pulley to make it balance Correctly..., AND also to Exhibit all the Period Correct Gyroscopic Effects and Precessions.... But the Beaurocrats at CASA have apparently abolished ANO-95:10 Entirely... So it would now be completely illegal for me to even rebuild my 2nd Aeroplane - and thus Electrify the Ultralight Motorglider with spare bits from my Electric Motorbike (!)...; let alone trying to cobble up and tinker together enough Rivets to be able to fly around in a little Cameloid Lookalike, which at least Handles properly...(!). My father's uncle flew Camels, briefly, with 4-Squadron AFC, and mum's father got an FAI Aviator's Certificate in 1917 with Stutt's School of Aviation at Williamstown and the English King pinned his AFC Wings on him, in March 1919...; so I grew up thinking myself to be Biggles. Search YT for, "National Transportation Museum ; Visiting My First Aeroplane...!" to giggle at what took me for my first Solo. Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

In Scott's defence, there are times where he has demonstrated the processes and I don't think he intends them to be "how-to" videos. To show all the repetitive stuff would actually get quite tedious to watch. I enjoy the way his videos are put together. A little bit of the process and then voila, here it is finished. They're not too long and certainly keep me engaged. But then I'm not trying to build a Camel myself so maybe some of you guys need to see more of that? A tripod would allow two hands free when filming some processes but, again, it could get boring if there were too many static shots and, personally, I love the informal, chatty, walk around, story-telling vibe 😀

I think you are being too picky regarding the tape. Once it is painted nobody is going to look that closely at the seams of the tape, as it will all be painted, and not easily discernible to the eye , except maybe by the maker. We all know our own short comings as makers. We are our own sternest critics. I get it, but sometimes you have to say good enough for purpose. This is not a display model, but a working aircraft.
