Disassembling my E30 Getrag 260 transmission

In this episode, I show you how to disassemble your Getrag 260 manual transmission. If you have a 6 cylinder M20 powered E30 with a manual then this is the transmission that you have. Some common reasons to open these boxes up and repair them are worn synchros, bearings and shift forks. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments especially if I missed something in the video.

Thanks for this video. I am 99% thru swapping my e30 with a 'rebuilt' g260, and it's not shifting into 1st or 2nd at all, or reverse every time. Definitely will use this when I have to pull it apart and find what was done wrong.
@85garage

When you pull it apart definitely check out the condition of the shift forks. It sounds like that’s the problem.

@@85garage You're a great guesser! Found two pretty buggered forks. One had the ends broken off, and the other had nothing left of the shoulder that rides in the syncro slider. Can't wait to put it back together and cause a ruckus
@85garage

@@timothybrown4635 yeah, those forks are pretty weak and wear down easily. There’s a company in the US (metric mechanics) that makes custom brass ones because of this. Let me know how you get on!

Hello Thank you very much for your video and really precise explanations Sorry in advance if I ask you a question that you have already been answered I improve a lot in English but I understand it better written than heard I just reassembled my first engine entirely an M20B25 and did the break-in cam all well was but I heard a clack clack that took me a while (and almost a heart attack by telling me that I had done something wrong with the reassembly of the engine) before I found out it came from my getrag Pedal clutch pressed no clac clac pedal clutch released at neutral claclaclac I have a question for you My E30 is a 325i 2wd with a getrag 260 I saw you these a getrag 260 of a 4wd probably a 325xi is what the intern is exactly the same? Before reassembling it on my E30 I change all the seals of front and behind the transmission (input/ output shifter axis) if I disassemble the transmission must I change them again (they have turn 15 minutes as 2500 rpm at neutral transmission then 500m speed 1/2/3 2500/3000 rpm max for the break-in I haven’t driven the car yet to find out if there’s a problem with synchro There’s a way to know if synchro are changing once the transmission is open to make your tool with the pipe you use to push the primary axis you find the base or? And my last question there is better bearing than the originals to be on that the default does not return Thank you good day and thank you again
@85garage
@85garage 6 месяцев назад
Hello, As far as I know all the internals are the same between 2wd and 4wd ix boxes. The only real difference is the case on the back for the transfer case to bolt to. I would change the seals any time you open the transmission. It’s just cheap insurance and the seals are that expensive. There is a measurement you can take using a feeler gauge to tell if the synchros are worn and should be replaced. I believe the specifications are in the Bentley manual. Not sure what you mean by the tool I made but it’s made entirely of cast iron pipe from my local hardware store. As far as the bearings go-the only source that I’ve found is through the dealer. They are a unique size.

Thanks for this video man, yesterday I was driving from work and the gears where bouncing out from gear 4 so when I finally came to a stop it wouldn’t select any gear, so I checked the shifter lever that goes from the gear to the gearbox and the seal was leaking bad, so when I yanked out the lever that whole long rod that selects gears came out with any idea what I should look at ? Thanks
@85garage
@85garage 2 года назад
The only way the selector rod could come out of the back of the transmission while the bellhousing is still together is if the roll pin that’s on the shaft sheared off. You’re going to have to open the transmission up to see what’s going on in there.

I followed all those steps of opening it but as you did in the video, it came apart about an inch wide “where the 13 bolts are” but it won’t come off totally out in to two pieces… it’s as if something is holding on to it on the inside, I tried wiggling it around but still not winning, you can literally see the gears on the inside

Great video series, have subscribed....... Please can you advise on the problem with my Getrag 240 5 speed gearbox, before I strip it down, as per your video. I can select gears 12345 ok, but not reverse. I cannot move gear selector stick, out of the neutral position, i.e. it won't move far left then forward?
@85garage
@85garage 7 месяцев назад
Most likely have an issue with the reverse lockout or idler in the rear of the case. Or even a slightly bent or damaged shift fork inside. Let me know what you find during teardown, it’ll probably be very easy to spot visually.
@Malcarper
@Malcarper 7 месяцев назад
@@85garage Thank you for the informative reply. After more investigating, I have removed the reverse detent spring, which on my 240 model transmission, is located 150mm, left of the reversing light switch. It now slides into reverse, with very little effort. I can see inside the detent hole, a cam that lifts up when reverse is selected. This cam intern pushes against the detent follower and spring. No obvious damage to the cam or follower, so guess there is a problem deeper inside? Before doing a full teardown, I'm thinking of trying a lighter / thinner gauge, detent spring. UPDATE: I cut the revers gear detent spring length, down from 35mm to 30mm. Reverse gear can now be selected.

i have a similar getrag in my car and its popping out of 1st and sometimes 3rd as i release the clutch, if i really force it into 1st it will stay there, otherwise it will pop out almost every time, even if i start it in 1st and then release the clutch it pops out of 1st, could this be an issue with the shift forks inside the transmission? if i put it almost in gear on other gears it will pop out which makes me think something is preventing it from going all the way into 1st

Doubt anyone will answer but someone told me the e30s getrag 260s have a better gear ratio n stuff than the ZF 310. I know the ZF’ scan handle a lot and the getrags from the e36s will blow with FI. Someone offered me a trade for me 320 ZF for a e30 260 getrag but I don’t honestly think it would be worth it. I know what I got & what it can handle but really have no idea about the e30s transmissions
@85garage
@85garage Год назад
I don’t know about gear ratio differences but the 260 is a strong transmission. I’ve seen plenty of high hp builds 600+ on this transmission without issue. Only weak point is the synchros. I’m running about 310hp on mine in my e30 behind an m20 and I’m not nice to it.

I was told by a shop mechanic that rear case was pressed in with crazy pressure so they wouldn't be able to rebuild my g260.

It’s not pressed together with a ton of pressure. Just have to make sure you press it out straight and it comes apart easily.

Thanks for your detailed video. Have been searching online for info regarding rebuilding the Getrag 260 for a while. This gearbox was a factory fitment paired with a GM 3800 V6 Ecotec engine in my 1996 GM Holden Commodore utility here in Australia. The car has around 270,000 km on the clock and the box has developed a bearing whine. Local gearbox repair shops aren't interested stating parts availability issues and difficulty splitting box. Unable to source parts locally that I am aware of, so I will order bearings on the FCP Euro site using the bearing numbers you have listed in the comments. Could you confirm if the following shaft seal numbers are the correct ones?: Input = 23121209311, Output = 23121205342. Thanks
@85garage
@85garage 2 года назад
Those are the correct videos for the seals. Don’t forget the shift shaft seal-23128677736. It can seem like a difficult job at first but if you take it step by step it’s pretty easy. Let me know if you have any question. Also I’m jealous, I wish GM would have sold Holden cars here in the US. I’d by a Ute in a heartbeat.

@@drayescobar9469 you can use a huge range of fluids in any getrag 260 platform. The reason I used ATF dex 3 is because it improves shifts in my climate. I drive it a lot in the winter here so shifts are great when it’s cold (30 and below). If you’re somewhere where it’s warmer most of the time your transmission will benefit from running GL4 gear oil like redline MT90 or MTL (the real difference is the weight between the two). So basically what it comes down to is the climate in which your driving your car in. I run ATF because it’s cold most of the time when I’m driving my car. Neither of these fluids will cause damage to your transmission it will just affect the quality of the shifts.
