Good video, I just bought a Sig M18 and was having so much trouble putting the gun back together when I was cleaning it. So I found this video and realized that the problem was the fact that I had that oval on the guide rod lined up horizontal rather than vertical. When I fixed that the problem was solved. The way that the M18 is designed as a carry pistol I like, especially with how versatile the thumb safety is and the smoothness of the trigger, but that is a huge problem that there’s a design flaw with the guide rod where you unknowingly put it back in the wrong way that it causes all these problems with reassembly.
@caseysammobench

Thank you so much for the sub and comment. I definitely love the pistol. I just got a TLR8-G for it. I got the Wilson Combat grip but had some troubles during the order process, and by the time the order worked, I forgot to hit the manual safety cut selection. I'm thinking I will go with gray guns though. I completely agree with you. I'm definitely not an expert, but I know it's best to keep things as simple as possible. I'm about to scour Google to see if there is an answer of why the guide rod has to be an oval.

I have been told by other more experienced and knowledgeable p320 owners as well as from vids from other gunTubers like yourself, to never release the slide from battery without a loaded and seated magazine, and that doing so can permanently damage the more fragile parts of the slide, (i.e. the firing pin, etc.). I don’t recall which creators video it was, but if my memory and logic serve me, the chambering of round provides the slide with needed resistance and protecting it from damage. I’m gonna go and try to find the video right now. Don’t trust me, you all should do the same. & Thank you for a great video by the way…

I have seen multiple things on if you should or should not. From the APEX trigger install video, directly from APEX talks about it. And since I have been doing it this way. I have not had a single issue with the pistol. I am not just letting it slam forward on empty all the time. I can't imagine the few times I do it per year after cleaning, it would cause any amount of damage.

@caseysammobench
@caseysammobench 11 месяцев назад
So, if you lock the slide to the rear and then use the slide lock release to release the slide. You should have no issues with the magazine locking in or a dead trigger. I ran into that with my M17 at work too and just doing that fixed all my issues with both the m17 and m18.

4:09 My M17 Fullsize has a circular plate instead of an oval plate at the end of the guide rod. I just checked out another video for assembling a P320 Compact and it too has the OVAL plate. So, I'm wondering if SIG had to use the oval plate as some sort of 11th-hour kludge fix on the Compact version when they downsized the P320 Fullsize version down to the Compact version which then got inherited by the M18?
@caseysammobench
@caseysammobench Год назад
I think you are right or mostly right. I get to use the m17 alot because they are in the Arms Room at work. The best answer I think I seen is because the round plate would interfere with the FCU assembly on occasion and even still does. That's why the guide rod will sometimes till come through the front on the assembly of an M17. Not sure how true that is but I suppose it is plausible. So to fix it they made the oval on the M18. I will try and reach out to sig and ask.

In regards to the oval part.. the holes need to be verticals but I noticed on that plate with the holes there is a small dimple on one side, does it matter which side it’s on? Does it matter? It shouldn't hurt the gun by any means. But, I believe the preferred method is rack the round with a full magazine safety off in a safe direction, safety on, then remove the mag and insert a new round to replace the one you just chambered and holster.

@Reepa008 interesting. Thank you for commenting that. I'm certain if it happened to you, someone else has experienced it before. It could have just needed some oil or any number of things I guess. But this is the first I have heard of that. Also, I know the spring on the 320 is tougher than others. They recommend around 1k rounds threw it to break it in. With all the junk on mine while it being new. I had some troubles cycling it. So I switched to a lighter spring and it has worked out great ever since. I believe it was DPS performance or something along those lines.

i can’t even take the take down lever out of the m18

Hope you got it by now. Definitely just took some outward pressure while rotating. It seemed to come out easier while it was in its original orientation.

Am I the only one saying I wish that guide rod reassembly part was more descriptive. Such as the oval should be inserted tall vertical or sideways. A drawing or somw more close ups. I never saw a clear camera angle.

It's definitely supposed to be vertical. I believe I mentioned it. Either way I hope the video did help.

This pistol can work normaly without striker reset spring??
@caseysammobench
@caseysammobench Год назад
I'd imagine it still needs the striker reset spring in order to function properly especially in the cycling process to reset the trigger. I'm not exactly sure which spring it is though with that label. But they are probably really cheap online from SIG directly.

@@caseysammobench i mean the small spring in side the striker and it doesn't affect the trigger reset

And if you don't lock the slide black when reassembling you will not be able to insert the magazine......
@caseysammobench
@caseysammobench 2 года назад
That does happen sometimes if you don't lock the slide back and release with the slide lock release lever. Also ensure your guide rod is in correctly with the holes vertical, straight up and down. I've seen it where it looks and almost feels like the magazine is in but it won't lock in. Seems to be kind of a quirky thing with this pistol. I don't know exactly why, it was just something I seen on the apex trigger instal video. I have had zero issues from the disassembly and re assembly the way I showed in the video though. Sorry for the late reply. I've been out of the loop the past week handling some business at work. I hope it helps.

Honestly, which engineer thought up such a assbackwards field strip? The oval part needs to be.... oval and in a certain orientation? And then you have to lock the slide back and then flip the switch otherwise the magazine cant be fully inserted! Yep. I am not making this up!
@caseysammobench
@caseysammobench Год назад
I agree and have asked myself several times why it is necessary to do that. I feel like maybe they just knew it was going to the military so they had to make it more complicated than necessary.

When you go to take the fcu out. Make sure the safety is off, and you press in on the trigger as you rotate it out, lifting up on the rear of the FCU. Hope this helps. I had the same issue.

Anybody else pistol doesn’t lock back on the last shot ?
@caseysammobench
@caseysammobench Год назад
I went with a DPM performance spring kit and it works great. It didn't lock back after the optic was mounted but still cycled, with barrel and optic it would cycle correctly or only every couple of rounds. If you are having some issues with nothing mounted I would 1st try a different ammo. Next just push some more through it to break it in anyway. I believe sig says it should be broke in at 1k rounds. The DPM spring kit is really nice at 80 bucks though. Comes with three springs. Light, medium and heavy

I feel like mine was pretty hard to push down at first, but after getting it worked in for a little while, it is easier now.
