Turns out my HW97 blew a seal (don't judge).
This video features: poor lighting, pellet holes in sheet rock, gratuitous seal pictures, and the clumsy use of hand tools.

I can tell that you have been in and out of your rifle several times, how well those pins popped out. I was just inside of my HW77 22. I'm not 100% sure about the front forks on the compression chamber, they were loose? The bolt on the bear trap was very lose. The pins came out very hard and went back in even harder, except for the cocking leaver pin, once I went in on the right side. I bought a Vortec spring and piston seal. The seal fit great but the mainspring was lose, so I made a shim for it. I also left the bear trap out. I have yet to test chronograph it, but before it was getting about 720 FPS with CPHP 14.3. Wife is sleeping, better wait, lol.🙂👍

Yeah, I've been in there a time or two lol. I spin the pins in a drill and use sandpaper to knock the sharp edges off each end to make things easier. I've seen loose and tight fitment between the cocking link and compression chamber. Seems the factory tolerances aren't very critical here. Less risk of damaging the link when they fit a bit loose though. I apply blue loc-tite to the threads on the bolt which secures the bear trap since it also helps to secure the stock. Is the Vortec the kit with the unfinished spring ends that can be indexed on the rear guide for more or less preload? I've heard good things about them but have never seen one myself.

@@Guru1ofatl I'm not sure, but I think that they are for max power. I did get out today and resighted in at 25 yards and did a chronograph test after, was getting just under 17 FPE. More zip up hear helps with the wind. I think that it will get faster.

@@springpistonriflefeverlone9611 That's plenty of power and I bet it'll get better as the seal wears in. The critters won't know what hit them.

Been doing good. I’ve been going to the DNR ranges and shooting my Ruger 10/22LR more recently. Much easier to shoot than my break barrel! LOL

Awesome, glad to hear you’re getting out and shooting. I agree, powder burners do tend to be a bit easier to deal with 😂 Hard to beat a 10/22, such a great little rifle and so much you can do with them.

I really appreciate the fact that you don't make stripping a Springer look like Rocket Science. 😉 Too many folks on RU-vid tend to blow it out of proportion and embellish the process. 🤨 This is discouraging and doesn't serve the interest of the airgun community. 4 minutes tops ? 🤷🏼‍♂️ And I Definitely Appreciate that you're keeping the format at 12 fpe. The 97 format is pure butter under twelve foot pounds ! 😀👍 FAC cannons are just embarrassing. 😉 Just keep it smooth and thread the needle... 😌 That's some curious wear on that seal ? 🤔

Thanks, I'm not big on over complicating things. There is enough of that in life without me adding to it. The FAC HW97 has always impressed me with it's accuracy out of the box. That said, sub 12fpe is a much nicer experience and so much easier to shoot. I've seen this failure mode a few times and it appears that a crack forms in the face of the seal creating a stress riser. Over time, the sharp edges of the crack deform as a result of the heat from compression.

I always like watching a disasembly video even if I do not own the rifle Very interesting end cap design basically you do not need a spring compressor? Id guess sizing the seal can also help not getting it scratched on the way in...{Gotta like them 2.30$ crosman seals haha} What are you using to size them?

Same here, I enjoy watching disassembly videos on most anything mechanical. It is an interesting design. It can be a royal pain when running a full power spring since the cap must be turned and compressed at the same time. Much easier with less preload. De-burring he compression tube prevents seal damage while sizing ensures that it is air tight without too much friction. I use a lathe and sandpaper on wood backers for shaping the seal. Love working with Crosman airguns due to parts availability and pricing. So user friendly! Just wrapped up some work on a Crosman 362 that is hitting around 16 fpe at 10 pumps.

Hey Russ, remember back a few months ago, when we shot together, at the end of the day your gun was shooting strange. To me it sounded a little off on a couple of shots. Maybe it started way back a few months ago?!?!

Hi Scott, that's entirely possible since I hadn't taken it down far enough to inspect the seal until after the Central Carolina GP. It seems to be shooting consistently now but I'll be keeping a much closer eye on it now. Hope you're doing well!

how do you get the thing off the front of the barrel?

Are you wanting to remove the lever latch assembly or just the plug on the end for barrel cleaning?

@@Guru1ofatl ... broken barrels on youtube had a video that covered the removal with a 7 mm allen. All done. thanks so much for the response.

A bit rushed for anyone wanting to learn how strip a 97. I’m sure it is informative for those who have done it before but not for the novice. And looking ahead the assembly is also rushed.

Thanks for the feedback. Another video with more detail might be in order. TbT Air Rifle Tuning has some good tear down videos if you're looking.

2lbsTrigrPull has an excellent video of an HW97 Takedown right here on RU-vid. Bear in mind he is from Germany so his rifle is actually 7.5 joules output and has no significant pre-load. Always check the location of a content provider when watching any mechanical maintenance videos on the internet. An FAC HW97k can have up to 2-3 inches of preload and the works can come flying out of there in A Big Fat Hurry if you're unprepared or lack a Spring Compressor ! 🙀🙀 Is That Satisfactory ? 🤷🏼‍♂️
