Barry: believe it or not, I’m cleaning my studio right now during the Summer. I’m not a woodworker or furniture restorer, but an interior designer that is a collector. I’m dealing with storage of things that need to be donated, or used again. Time consuming, but so worthwhile. Watching your video gave me more zing to move along. Thank you. Carol from California

Barry, you have a heart for wood, you are an old soul truly. I love what you are doing with your workspace. I have a mountain disaster in my workspace bc I have been ill for so long, you remind me that taking bite sized pieces and areas at a time and organize things don't get so overwhelming. I love personalizing. Nick Zametti marks everything he makes and I learned from flippingdrawers how important clean marked spaces can be and from At restoration. Thank you for all you do and for sharing your life with all of us.

When I saw the mess in his workspace, I thought….”This is just for the viewers! He never EVER lets his workspace get that messy!” And, I really thought that it was going to be blah, blah, blah style. But, true to his natural self, it was organised, informative and very worthwhile watching! He has a very special way of doing and explaining, with that pleasant and inviting voice. I think he is my favourite of all the restorers, followed closely by Jay on Flipping Drawers. And who can surpass little Mando for sweetness!?

I've used old entertainment centers and discarded bookshelves, and my own made workbench from scraps of wood to organize my things in our garage. I have watched with envy the transformation of garages using matching cabinets, workbenches and painted/speckled concrete floors. That will never happen for me so thank you for sharing your combination of recycled furniture. It looks amazing!!!

Organizing my studio is my first step to starting a new project. As much as I try to be neat, I still find lots of threads and bits of fabric on the floor. It gets caught in the wheels of my office chair, so cleaning them makes a noticeable improvement in rolling between work tables, sewing machines, and ironing board. Weather sewing clothing, hand sewing quilts, or weaving, clearing my work tops is inspirational.

Thank you for all the tips on where you found the very useful storage items and tools and how you keep them. This video is so helpful. Yes, labelling! I love labelling! Actually, it just so happens that this weekend, I took pix of all my shoes and printed them out on a little mini printer that prints stickers. Then I stuck each sticker on the appropriate shoe tote, so I don't have to open every one of them to find the shoes I want 🎉🎉🎉 Yes, the totes are see-thru, but that doesn't matter when they're stacked in a dimly lit area...

You may have just inspired me to finally get my dads garage “put to rights”! he was a jack of all trades and a tool for every one of them, but couldn’t organize any! Lol that’s where I came in when he would call me into the garage to “hold something for him” code for go get it, pick up that and hold it for a second! I learned so much from those times and he’s been gone for 12 years now and there is still sawdust in corners and tools laying on counters… maybe it time to get some things done!

Hi Barry, I also am currently reorganizing my workspace in my basement. It is my sanctuary, but it is a shared space for my family. My furniture or art supplies are crammed in along with camping gear, Costco groceries and holiday decor, washer/dryer and freezer. This year, my mother, who has dementia, came to live with us through the winter and I am struggling to create a workspace for her as well. The best I can do is label assorted clear buckets and to build vertical storage shelves. This opens up the floor space and makes less tripping hazards for both my mom and me. ~ Debbi

I enjoyed your latest video. Your workspace is yours, and it is great. I especially appreciate how you use lighting and objects, like art, to define the space. For me, it helps set my work mood and focus. Additionally, having these items to view, often allows the creative mind to free float, sharpening focus. Seeing pictures of many historic ‘workshops’, I.e., Einstein desk, of Edison’s workspace, you are very similar. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve always thought your workshop is so cool - so many interesting & beautiful things to see 😃 I enjoy organizing & find using clear containers so I can easily see what’s in the bin/basket, labeling (like your dad said) or color coding (I use color coding a lot), & giving things if not a particular place a particular area to return each time. “A place for everything & everything in its place.” I really like the peg board you have & want to work that into my creative & gardening spaces. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

In the military; in civilian life that included trade schools, factories, automotive repair shops, and most every other job, there was a designated time to knock off work, put the tools away, and clean up. 95% of any place I ever worked, at a quarter of the hour (typically), someone would holler "clean up!" And that would get echoed throughout the work space. Were there people who cheated that by knocking off a half hour before quitting? Sure. But for the most part, people I worked with were pretty good about putting stuff away, cleaning off work benches, washing up, and so on. It made it that much easier to come in to work in the morning, knowing that a) you didn't have a big, honkin' mess to deal with, and b) any leftover messes or missed tools were both easy to spot, and quick to take care of before getting on with your day. Even when things were so hectic that it was late hours, wee hours, even all-nighters, when it's time to go, pick up the tools, sweep as much as you can, and deal with the rest when you come back in. Even a half-ass swipe at squaring things away is better than not doing it at all.

But, those of us who know you well knew it was for the real messy people, who are their own worst enemies in the workplace! I love this! I moved into my space last year, and built a built in work bench with shelves, with a huge pegboard above it that I hang most of my tools for. I find it really helpful to see my tools out. I also have a dedicated staging area for photos and video. I also go a bit bonkers with my label maker.

Staying clean is not easy. I use a lot of tools, brushes, paints for my doll houses. I have quite a few small plastic bins for beads, left over pieces that I use later for different projects. I keep a utinsil holder to keep brushes in and handy. Have drawers for pens, pencils, and rulers in and keep knives and blades and scissors separate. Wood goes in a big box. Have a great day Barry
