I installed a generator switch on the house some time ago, but I have changed my plan since. I now have several power banks & a small 2000 watt generator. This week I have been setting up a solar system with 315AH of batteries with 2000 watt inverter. Good on son and wife getting generator up and running! I keep my older generators around as someone will need to barrow, I am sure. I have a couple of cases of motor oil stored. Layers of preparation.

Jack a battery system into a house circuit with a switching inverter. Run a bit of solar to the batteries and/or a 120v charger. Then run an auto start generator when it gets super low. Gen switches on, juices up the batteries, turns off.

I wonder how easy/helpful it would be to run a small pump and radiator type thing to cycle oil away from the generator to cool down and run cooler oil that way through it

I have 6 or so of the smaller solar gens. If I get a big one I will go with a Grid Down whole home system. They are EMP Hardened. Pretty sweet units.

They make generators that are powered by the pto on a tractor. Being diesel, they tend to sip fuel. I can't speak to their duty cycle, but I am sure it is much longer than the typical homeowner portable generator. Engineer775 has some videos on his channel on them.

I ended up with six generators from over the years. 3 are gaso, 1 propane, and 2 dual fuel gaso propane. 3 of them are large, and 3 are the small inverter quiet ones. One of the large is electric start, the other two arent, and can be very hard to start. I had seen a vid on here where the guy took the flywheel cover off, and used a socket of the right size with a cordless drill and electric started it that way. I will try it one of these days. The small inverter ones will crank on the first pull. Then of course I also have several inverters in the 2k 3k watt range, so I could use my vehicles as gens if need be. I guess I'm a lil crazy with this stuff. I dont have any kind of way to hook them to the house though, it will be cords when the time comes. I do have several of the largest yellow extension cords. I like the look of the generator interlock panel and may get around to that at some point.
