Watch Disasters of the Century Season 3 Episode 28 Vajont Dam Collapse on Bad Day HQ
One of the most spectacular and deadly dam failures in history occurred in Italy's Longarone Valley on October 9, 1963. Just 2 years old, the new dam was crested by a storm surge after massive waves set off a landslide. That landslide dropped tons of earth into the reservoir and overflowed the dam. In an instant, 2500 lives were washed away.

The narrator is pleasant to listen to.I have a condition called Hyperactive Neuropathy and I am in near constant pain.I meditate often to avoid taking too much medication to fight the pain.Programs like this actually is therapeutic in a sense.Seriously.The interesting topics and the well spoken narration gets me to home in on it and forget about my pain.Hyperactive Neuropathy attacks random parts of your body but my pain is centered in both legs and the pain is very

The pain of grief never leaves you, no matter how long ago the people you loved died.

my grandfather worked as photoreporter for the army at the time and was the first reporter arrived on the site on very early morning, while the sky was still dark. he never talked about that experience that much. what he lefts is a huge collection of photos. he was not the type of man who liked to take pics of dead bodies... he just said "it was impossible to take a picture without portraying pieces of human beings. it was my job...and I had to do it but my life has never be the same since that day. even during WWII i never saw such horror." that's all he said about his experience. And my grandfather wasn't really a impressionable man... this is the worst, biggest national crime Italy has ever experienced.

This was so fascinating, I kept going back to review over and over, the chain of reactions that caused so much devastation. "Sleep with your eyes open." ridiculous response. So incredible the forces that wiped out so many lives.

The narrow arch dam sustained a pressure of 38,000 mega-newtons of energy. The powerhouse was removed from the left abutment face of the dam. Steel doors were torn from their hinges, yet the dam largely stood. The stresses impacting on this dam were stupendous. It is amazing the great engineering the dam represented and the faulty geological studies that . . . undermined its demise as a working hydro project.

There was a freak wave created by a mountain sliding, but the dam actually did NOT collapse...had this happened it would have been WAY worse - but the dam resisted, although it got hit badly and 2000 souls lost their lives in few minutes in the valley downstream... The "hit-time" was so brief they didn't even see the wave coming... most of the bodies couldn't even be found and a whole town was simply GRINDED TO BITS in a matter of minutes by a wave of water and debris.

We visited Longarone and the Vajont dam in 1998 and I remember it very clearly still. What sticks in my mind most are the names of the dam workers killed on plaques by the dam itself and the picture of Longarone taken before the disaster and the one taken after most of the clean-up had occurred. In the second picture, there is only the concrete church standing and recognizable from the previous picture. the destruction was almost complete and it's a miracle that anyone survived it.

Seconds From Disaster also had a great episode on this tragedy. With both, viewers can get some real appreciation of the tragedy.

Wow, a true night of Hell to have lived through. At least for those who perished it would have been quickly over.

"Dam Collapse" dam survived just fine, good engineering was praised. Odd choice for a title. Probably should have been titled as a rockslide instead.

There is an error in the title, the dam never collapsed, there was no collapse of the Vajont dam, it's still there.

Mysteries of the Abandoned has a segment about this dam. It's got such an eerie, ominous presence even all these years later with no water- just rubble.

I remember reading about this in a Readers Digest when I was a kidlet at my Grandma's back around 1970. Old Readers Digest sitting on a shelf behind the toilet, next to the wooden matches. You'd light one to cover the smell ☺

I cant fully understand that this happen, especially when in 1958 in Latoya Bay Alaska's, had a land slide that generated the greatest wave when it hit the water that's has ever been recorded, even though there was no dam involve there such as this case. We're talking about 5 years latter and this happens? unbelievable, Iam so sad for these innocent victims. In this presentation people were worried!, Always go with your gut feeling!!!
