With everything I've always heard about Boris Karloff being such a mild-mannered, kindly gentleman, it does not come as a surprise to hear that he and his acting troupe would stage a benefit for the town. Just makes me like him even more.

Disheartening to see a lot of people passing judgment on those in the storm who didn't take what we now know to be "common sense" or "standard" precautions in tornadoes. This was 1912. Tornado prediction and knowledge as we know it today didn't exist. It's always amazing how many can sit with the comfort of some 70+ years of improved tornadic research, prediction and warning and can throw stones at people who didn't have a fraction of the chance of surviving one that we do today.

Exactly! It’s much like judging people in the path of a hurricane or other weather phenomenon back then. The technology was just not around to be able to give them warning, and the understanding of where such phenomenon came from didn’t exist yet.

Has anyone ever seen a tornado being born? I had that very thing happening to me. I was putting groceries into a car, and happened to look up when the sky fist got super black, the turned green. I said oh-oh! My hubby is like it's going to rain. I said haven't you been listening?We've had tornado warnings all day! I stood there for a second, and looked up, there it was a funnel cloud, and this was no small tornado! Had it touched down it would've been at last at least an EF5, it was huge monster.

Tseng Akera - those were very well built houses, a lot of them in that area are still standing today, in use as homes and businesses. The reason there weren't more houses destroyed, was likely because they are built so close together. The wind had to lift off an end one to lift the next one to it. That's my theory anyway. Sure.....Regina means "Queen" in Latin hence Regina is named as the Queen's City or Queen City. Victoria is also a main street in Regina. Dominion day is July 1st or Canada Day. I think in the late 80's and early 90's a F-4 hit a trailer park in Canada! The local dispatcher thought the 911 calls he was getting were pranks (till the 5-6th call about what happened) and the responding officer though it was just a large dust devil till he was the devastation first hand! Tornados can happen ANYWHERE if the conditions are perfect!

That actually happened here in my hometown of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Back in 1974 the commonly held belief was that Lake Winnebago would cause storms to shift north & go around us. My parents talked about the storm (they were on the opposite side of town from where the tornado hit), they saw the storm actually go over the lake & then back up. They knew it was bad. When the tornado touched down people were calling the radio trying to report the tornado but the announcer refused to believe them until the sheriff called & told him to knock it off cuz it was true. It followed Sawyer Creek & 9th Ave...even took the roof off my elementary school gym & slammed it back down. Storms do what they do with no regard to our rules.

@@hoss73ford Yup. July 31, 1987. It missed my workplace by a mile or two (though we did get freakish winds and massive hail), but went past within a block of a co-worker's house before crossing the river and hitting the trailer park. The ironic thing was that the previous evening, I'd been noticing the weather pattern, said to the people around that it was the kind of weather that spawned tornados and got scoffed at with "that doesn't happen here". Less than 24 hours later, it did.

Why would they know? The city was relatively new and tornados are very rare in that area. I lived in Regina in the 1960s, and tornado preparedness was not something we knew or were taught about even then. The 1912 incident was regarded as a freak storm that would not likely happen again. But it almost did: In the late 1960s one hit a few miles south of the city near a friend's farm. He told me his neighbours' barn a few hundred yards on the other side of highway 6 was completely destroyed.

There were shingles missing and our bikes we left near the road were blocks away with bent rims and broken chains, his dads old car had been moved half way onto the lawn and the roof over the top portion of the driveway collapsed half way onto the car. @indy_go_blue6048 6 лет назад
There're several interesting docs on YT about various epidemics. Yellow fever, bubonic plague, the Spanish flu, TB, Ebola and AIDS of course, to name a few I've watched here. None from BDHq though.
@JCBro-yg8vd
@JCBro-yg8vd 4 года назад
@@indy_go_blue6048 I don't know if they're doing Ebola, the focus seems to be on 20th Century disasters (1900-1999). And the AIDS epidemic would be incredibly controversial, because especially in the U.S. and Europe there was a lot of controversy surrounding the disease at first.

Regina in Latin means "Queen" So Regina Victoria means Queen Victoria. However, the are pronounced differently. The City is pronounced Ra-jina and the Latin word for Queen is pronounce Ree-gina. Hope that helps.

If Frank and Bertha Blenkhorn had immigrated to Hollywood California, they would have starred in movies and TV series as an singing-dancing-acting athletic couple as they would each live on as they would have aged well, while being guest stars at the Muppet Show (Frank (100 years old) and Bertha (95) in 1977 dedicated to London's history), and still act in their 100's where they still walk upright until they each die (Frank Blenkhorn (1877-1988) and Bertha Blenkhorn (1882-1993)) at 111 years old.

Nowadays the Fujitsu scale would have classified this tornado as a4 or 5, quite easily. Old structures may be old, but brick and concrete and tonnage train cars are not easily swayed by high winds unless they fall into severe to devastating levels.

It is the FUJITA scale. Fujitsu is not a real thing... also there is now the stupid Enhanced Fujita Scale, so what was a F4 back then is probably a high EF3 with the damned EF scale.

It irritates me to no end that this series does NOT do more of its homework for historical accuracy. In this era, no one of any class would be without a handkerchief anymore than they would be without pants or a skirt. Even cowboys ans stevedors carried handkerchiefs: that's where bandanas come from. All this wiping of sweat with sleeves is ludicrous acting. It is Particularly offensive to see the preacher and upper echelon society ladies do it. Get a grip directors, do your work! Also, Frank may be a decent writer, but his meteorology sucks.
