In my second playthrough of the game I was a Oathbreaker Paladin Duergar Dark Urge and Gale had more levels of a Wild Magic Sorcerer than Wizard. I was playing with a mod to increase the level cap to 20, and was at level 20 already when I met Ansur. I was still struggling in that battle, when I decided to try my Oathbreaker Channel Oath ability "Control Undead." (That only works on undead units of lower level than the caster, so for a level 17 Ansur you must be level 18+.) It said I had about a 20% chance of working, but Gale was to spend a couple Sorcery points to use his Bend Luck ability which was just enough to let the ability work. The battle ended quickly and I got a pet undead dragon. Unfortunately, my dominated Ansur had 0 movement speed. He would still somehow follow me through the door out of his chamber and would follow me to the Rivington or South Span of Wyrm's Crossing Waypoints, but then would just sit there without moving. He refused to follow me to waypoints into the Lower City region and was of no use in a fight. Also, he never dropped Balduran's Giant Slayer. I'd had similar luck earlier in the game when I successfully dominated the Apostle of Myrkul. He would not drop Ketheric's Netherstone, so I had to savescum to get to act 3. Myrkul was only level 11, so it might be possible to dominate him without modding if you can get enough xp to reach the level cap before the final act 2 boss battle. I was using a mod to half the xp needed per level and was level 14 already in that playthrough. Without that mod the highest level I've had in that fight was level 10.

In my current game (Wylll origin) I decided to go straight to the Wyrmway to meet Ansur before talking with Gortash. I'm using the hardest difficulty version of the Tactician Plus mod, to make up for some the other mods that add new equipment, change the level cap to 20, and raise the party size to allow all the companions to be in the party at once. When I moused over the corpse of Ansur and saw how much xp the mod gave him, I got scared and predicted a total party kill if I confronted him at that level. Rather than save scumming, I tried using the group hide ability to walk past him without triggering the dialogue, allowing me to get the Helm of Balduran and then walk out of there without a fight. p.s. You can kill everyone in the prison and the first floor of Wyrm's Rock prison before talking to Gortash, without making anyone in the Audience Chamber hostile. That will make it easier when you go back to kill Gortash later.
The test of courage is super easy if only a single character enters the chamber and cast Sanctuary on itself as soon as it picks up the torch. There is no need to fight a battle at all, just stand there while the elementals move around with no ability to attack you. Sanctuary is a 1st level cleric spell that makes it impossible for enemies to attack the character for 10 turns, or until the character attacks someone else. Some area of effect spells may still cause damage, but the character cannot be targeted for any melee, ranged, or spell attack. On Tactician some elementals cause a vortex that causes a little area of effect damage that is not blocked by Sanctuary, but it is not enough to worry about. One regular healing potion after the battle brought my Shadowheart back to full health after I did that trial yesterday.
One of the tests in finishing a chess match in 2 turns. If you have Gale in your party, he will tell you exactly the moves to make to win. If you are bad at chess, you could also just cheat and attack the king yourself instead of moving any pieces. The only rule you must follow is that the king must fall. Following the rules of chess is allowed, but not required.
