Disastrous honey comb bowl, resin and Cedar

This bowl was an unmitigated disaster, i think i had a chemical reaction between the resin and the hot glue i used causing lots of large air bubbles to form
I try to use this woodturning channel as a platform to share ideas, and to demonstrate to other wood workers the steps needed to achieve this.
I use many different types of wood in varying combinations, as well as combining this with resins, i tend to use glass cast 50 as i can use this without the need of a pressure pot.
For my finishes I use things like Wood dyes spirit based and water based, high gloss wax and Boiled Linseed Oil - Danish oil and hard wax oil. I also like to experiment with differing textures to give my bowls a different feel to them
For my actual wood turning i use a galaxy DVR lathe 14 44 which is very versatile, which gives me the ability to turn a 14-inch bowl or spindle length of 44-inchs
Thank you very much for watching my channel and please feel free to leave comments below.

We can understand your disappointment after all that hard work! We really liked the black and purple resin effect and can't wait to see MKII. Peter thinks it might have been the very warm temperature overnight, but we may never know. 🥰

I know when it cracks like that it is usualy because it has cured too quickly causing to much heat, but as to the rest who knows

Hi Steve, I don't think it could have been the hot glue. What I think it might have been is trapped air under the cardboard that has seeped through as it softened with the moisture. The rest of the procedure was sound and you used the right resin. Please give it another try but no cardboard. All the best, Mike

Hi Mike I have mixed a cup of resin and left it to cure so if no bubbles i can rule that out, I know the resin had sat down in my workshop all over the winter and had gone cloudy but i put it in warm water as it tells you

I appreciate that you shared this video. I understand that issues like this can be disheartening and disappointing. But, sometimes things go badly. Looking at the piecer, much of the reaction is against the surfaces of the wood. This suggests some sort of reaction with the wood. It looks like moisture but it could be anything. The resin areas look sound. Please keep at it. I enjoy your work and your videos.

It really looks beautiful, it does kind of sting a little with the time, effort, and cost. But, your craftsmanship is excellent!

Thanks Chris, Thankyou for the kind words. I do envy some of these people who look as if they are sponsored by resin companies it is so expensive to buy but really does enhance some pieces you turn. Take care Steve

Hello Steve. This could have been a beautiful project without the complication. This has happened to one of my projects before in which the resin creates a thermal reaction when the poured layer is too deep at one time unless you are using the deep pour epoxy which takes time to cure about 4 days with a maximum thickness of 3 inches at a time will prevent this thermal reaction since it’s a slow curing process . If what you used is the one that cure’s within 24 hrs, be sure to follow the instruction of how deep you can pour at one time( usually about 1 to 2 inches) then wait for that resin to cool off before adding more layer which is about 4 to 5 hrs in between. And of course the pressure pot will eliminate those tiny bubbles that might get trapped inside the project but will not prevent the thermal reaction. Hope these help my friend. Cheers- Jojo

Lovely design and colours. The only thing to do is to repeat the project eliminating the possible causes ie. fresh resin, superglue, cooler conditions and something non-porous instead of cardboard. Was there an air gap between the cardboard and the bottom of the tub?
@thehampshirewoodturner
@thehampshirewoodturner 10 месяцев назад
Hi Myk I am beginning to think the main problem was the cardboard as the wood and the card wanted to start floating and i should of taped it down

This is the first video of yours I've seen, coming from Mike Holton's channel where he turned the walnut you gave him. While extremely disappointing, I'm glad you shared. The pattern of wood, the red color of the wood against the black/purple resin, and the slightly closed shape (even if forced by some of the chipping) all make an extremely attractive piece. Definitely not your design at fault. I'm with everyone else I'm sure going through the possibilities of what went wrong (was it mixing the resin? almost certainly not since the solid pieces of resin were (cough) solid and the colors well formed; was it the cardboard? maybe for the big pits at bottom but not for everything since the bubbles outline each wood piece; was it the glue? probably not or it would ALL be on the bottom, not up the sides and top; excessive heat and fast curing? explains the cracks and that bubbles were caught in the resin, but not why the bubbles were there in the first place. My inexpert conclusion is that the major issue HAS to be a reaction between the wood and resin, whether as the resin was seeping into unstabilized wood and bubbles seeping out or an actual reaction with the cedar.) I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work and will be going back through your playlist to catch up. I hope, if you haven't already, you will be able to get a vacuum chamber to up your resin and wood game. Then seeing the Mark 2 of this bowl, good luck!

Thanks Susan, I find it odd that me and Mike have made such good friends through RU-vid but have never actualy spoken to each other. I cant decide what went wrong with this piece, i have since used the resin and the wood so dont think there was much wrong with that, or maybe it was just a combination of things, i dont think we will ever know the answer to this one
@MoleValleyMaker

Nah, don't think it's the hot glue as it's used too often by others. More likely air in the cardboard or maybe even some sort of chemical in the card. Never used glasscast as I use Swindon Composites EH125 which has a 3-5 day cure and hence allows air to escape although I also have a converted paint pressure pot. Also I wonder if there was moisture in the wood? Hot humid night added to it maybe?
@thehampshirewoodturner

Hi Dave is that swindon composite good, i keep looking at preasure pots but i dont really do enough resin to warrant the cost

Steve p I don't think it was the hot glue ive used it and never had a problem like that even before i got got a pressure pot I think you maychve some bad resin. But i honestly don't know it would have been an awesome bowl
