In this video I share with you the full care of the beautiful dischidia oiantha variegata and embark on a propagation project to turn this plant into more than 10 pots! This is a difficult plant (A step harder than hoyas) and the care of often misunderstood, so pay close attention! In the middle of the project I battle southern blight (Sclerotium rolfsii), a very deadly and contagious fungi. Watch how I treat this plant and turn lemons into lemonade!

Hi! How do you water your dischidia? Do you submerge the coconut husk in water? Mine seems to be drying out cause the leaves are still shrivelled after watering. Scared to water more cause I might go overboard! Thank you, such an informative video!
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
If its in full coconut husk, do let them dry out between watering and yes the best way is to submerge them and wait until its fully saturated. Dried leaves even after proper watering could be sign of insufficient roots to support that plant. This could be due to the roots rotting on or dried out (dead) best take cuttings if you can’t check the roots.

Idk if you will see this, but I have two dischidias, one imbricata and one oiantha. The imbricata I got about a month ago and when I moved it very close to my window (indirect light all day but no direct sun) it started showing some black dots on the leaves. I was scared it could be fungus or something. I recently purchased a oiantha and upon arriving I inspected it and saw very few of those dots. I also placed it near a window without direct sunlight and the dots seemed to have increased as well. Do you know if this could be light related? I have now put them further away from the window and I'm observing but I'm worried about them :(
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
I suspect it could be scale? Which is a type of pest. Does it come off when you gently pick it off with your nails? Another possibility is bacteria/fungus, usually caused by misting leaves indoors or pests.

I've never used spagnum moss for propogation before and I have a question. Do we place the pot that contains spagnum moss in water just like perlite propogation or do we water normally just like plants in soil? Would love to hear from you. Thank you. Rgrds from Malaysia
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Hello, sphagnum moss can get really really wet and compact... you should keep them fluffy, airy, and slightly damp only. This means never get them in heavy rain or heavy watering. Mist when it feels really dry. You want to achieve humidity in the moss for propagation, but not wetness. I’ve overwatered so many cuttings in moss before I learnt this.
@ivyrosegabica8762
@ivyrosegabica8762 3 года назад
Hi again! So if I propagate in soil, you mentioned that rain water will just take care of it. But what if you live in a hot but humid climate ( Hawaii) how often or do I tell if I need to spray some water on it.
@ivyrosegabica8762
@ivyrosegabica8762 3 года назад
Lahaina never rains, especially with summer coming up
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
I would keep it only slightly damp but never wet or compacyed. The key is to have humidity around the roots with airflow/drying out period (but never allow it to dry out completely for too long either). It takes practice and experience! X😀
@invinciblecucumber
@invinciblecucumber 3 года назад
Can you plant those nods in moss, while they're still attached to mother plant? I think they would establish root system faster that way, cause they would continue to receive all necessary nutrients, and afterwards you can just cut the "umbilical cord".

I had cut off the end of a plant because it became dry… once at home I cut them up in smaller pieces😫 after a week in water I came to the conclusion I put them up side down in the water🥺 should I flip them around again or leave as is??? It gave tiny roots already will it form leaves???
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 года назад
They only need one node to sprout leaves, i would maybe cut them into single nodes and move them to moss if it already has some roots. Keep the moss wet at first and then slowly back off with watering until it dries out completely between watering

@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Its quite hard to remove them you will lose some roots for sure but you basically pry the husk open. Try growing it in its old media though... water it every few days and pay attention to the leaves. Yellowing means overwatering and wrinkly/limp means underwatering. You can also take cuttings for insurance.

@onlyplants

Water the soil with the same water used for propagation at first. Saturate completely. Then keep an eye out closely, watering when the media is almost completely dry but don’t be late. Do not overwater also… now over the next few months let the media go drier between watering until its completely dry between watering 😀
