Discipline doesn't work. Here's what to do instead.

Something a lil different this week - talking about how discipline isn't the answer. Traditional discipline (the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses) is one of those traits that it feels like 'if we just had some more of it... imagine what we'd accomplish.' - over time I've learned that discipline isn't the answer. In this video I share what you can work on instead of discipline to build better habits, routines and lives.

Discipline actually comes from “discere” (latin), literally meaning “to learn”, not “to struggle”.

That's SO interesting! It's wild how much the interpretation has changed. I definitely think more of "the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses." definition that lacks self compassion and learning - to learn is absolutely the definition of self discipline I'd prefer.

Something I’ve found that has helped me is paying attention to my cycle. The week before my period, I’m tired and unmotivated. The week after I feel “normal”, the week after that (around ovulation) I can clean the house until 11:30 at night and have so much focus and energy. I just try and embrace these ebbs and flows instead of forcing myself against them. During my period and before, I’d rather do yoga and lift weights vs when I’m more energetic, I can run or push myself harder

Choice is fantastic and there's no one correct method of birth control, but I wish women were given more information about the affects it has on their bodies. Especially long term.

This video is so simple but literally changed my life, I mean literally. I used to beat myself down about everything I didn't have the discipline to do (mostly keep a job and volunteer) and I thought all the other people could do but not me. I started feeling more and more like a failure and struggle so much to the point of depression and I gave up trying and got into financial difficulties. And then one day I run into this video and it gave me finally the hope I needed to try one more time but at my pace and with my conditions and feeling a bit more compassion towards who I am, and it started working! Little by little this method gave me my life back. I'm not expressing it that well but I really want to thank you for this video, I can say, no matter how exaggerating it sounds, that it saved my life 💛

Self discipline does work really well. I tidy my house daily, workout daily, stretch daily. But sometimes I miss a day and that's okay. Self discipline takes time but can be achieved. It's not about the discipline, it's about the want to be disciplined and the fact that you try. If you don't bother trying you'll never be disciplined. And discipline has changed my life for the better

Recently I have unknowingly somehow figured the second tip out, just to start for 5-10 minutes and then see how things go and it really works for me. The biggest obstacle for me is to start. Your wideo has made me sure of this aproach :) it's a really good way of tricking your mind into doing something.

I really resonated with your point on, "just because one way doesn't workout for you, doesn't mean it it's not meant for you"! In most cases we only see the end result and successes of people online and we hope that we will be exactly the same. It's just so easy to see something we think we might like and incorporate it into our life, without much intention. When it doesn't work out following their exact steps we get frustrated and disappointed. It's like putting the wrong pieces of a puzzle together. Trial and error is a great way to get to know yourself and find what does and does not work for you. We shouldn't be afraid to fail and retry again and be different from each other! This video was different but a pleasant surprise, love that you are slowly branching out but still putting your supportive, honest and positive spin on it!

no one that was ever succesful has never failed. the people who are most successful have often been bankrupt at least once. when you know what area draw you more than others and you find it overlaps with what you are good at, THEN put in the time to become the best at it. IF that's what you want to do.

This approach worked so well for me when it came to dieting. I want to eat better food for so long but I relied on self-discipline and when I failed I felt a lot of guilt and thought dieting is not for me. When I tried to approach it more like a problem solving thing and tried multiple diets and failed multiple times I finally found what works for me. Today marks the end of the first month of my diet and I lost 7kgs. Whatever it is you're trying to achieve, if you fail don't give up and approach it from a different angle ♥

You are a Wonderful Gift. I call this the good way to sabotage myself, just even putting my yoga pants on makes it easier to give in later when I’m faced with the opportunity to go for a walk, then maybe I’ll start jogging on my walk. Hehe then I’m on my way home all puffed out, smiling because I remember how good it feels to do something GOOD for me. Then I realised I’ve actually just taught myself Love.. Self-Love! All this good stuff is connected. What a wonderful blessing. Thank you so much for reminding me to choose the Good, and to take that first step, consciously more often. 🙏🏼❤️

The instigation habit thing is so effective. I noticed that when I open my workout app to decide if I'm motivated enough to work out, it gives me motivation. Or starting to watch the workout video (I change up the kinds of workouts I do with different apps and RU-vid videos because I tend to get bored. That also keeps me more motivated because of the novelty factor). This is after trying unsuccessfully to work out for so many years and being motivated and successful for 2 weeks max and then giving up. Now I've consistently been working out most mornings for 4 months, I hope I manage to keep it going! What has really helped my consistency the most though is realizing how good I feel after I work out, and how my energy levels and mood are much better throughout the rest of the day.

I literally had the thought “maybe I’m just not the kind of person who can do those things” and hearing you say that’s not true and that there’s a better way has given me so much hope. I’m going to keep trying different pieces until I get my puzzle together!

I truly love this video. Another mindset that has helped me is to see the things I am doing to improve my life as actually being in and of itself a form of self care, rather than a weapon to beat myself over the head with. If it's my own life I'm trying to improve, well that is taking care of myself, isn't it? What's there to beat myself up with if the entire point is my well being? Changing my habits is not a separate action from myself for a separate theoretical me

Love this. This also has a lot to do with periods in one’s life. Things are financially. Sometimes early morning workouts are good. Sometimes that’s the last thing one has the energy for. Sometimes the creative juices will be flowing and sometimes you just can’t create no matter how hard you try. It’s really important to be gentle and forgiving that we’re not what we were or will be in order to not have a bad experience with working towards goals.

Getting started is the biggest obstacle. Say the goal is a 3 mile jog, but I feel sluggish. I’ll give myself permission to stop after 10 minutes, but when that time comes I’m warmed up and have the momentum to continue. Goal is cleaning the house: I’ll pick one chore and give myself permission to stop after that, but usually if I just get started I want to keep going. And even if I do stop short I still got SOMETHING done. We need to be gentle with ourselves. Progress not perfection. 😊

That focus on problem-solving and experimenting part was genius. Another RU-vidr had recently mentioned that for meditating and other learning techniques the objective is to practice starting again and again. Just attempt to do the new thing and observe how it goes, and now you mentioned to tweak and adjust new habit implementation even 10 times. From this angle, it doesn't feel like using great willpower to do chores and errands that lead to burn out, but you succeed at your new endeavor by systematically taking down obstacles through methodical observation and rapid adaptation on each iteration. Thank you!

I just watched enough to say discipline does work, both as a responsible parent and/or a single person. Authoritarian regimes are always doomed to failure, but authoritative teaching and reaching an understanding is far more beneficial to young and old. I learnt that the hard way as a now single but sane and main man. I taught my son respect but alas he is now making the mistake I made in wanting to be a better parent. I wish him well in this wild world.

Something that really helped me with this was looking into Gretchen Rubin's 4 Tendencies! I had spent ages thinking of myself as someone who needed accountability to work but then being confused why that just made me avoid the task harder. After looking into this more I realized I actually had more of the "Rebel" tendency and taking steps to adapt my behavior to that was super helpful for me to actually start getting stuff done!

@riley3984
@riley3984 4 года назад
@@JessBess She has a few different articles on her site about different habit strategies for rebels that I've found helpful. But the main advice is find a personal reason to to identify with what you want to do, and avoid the typical strategies of scheduling and reward systems. An example for me is when it comes to schoolwork. A deadline in itself isn't a great motivator for me and can often do the opposite, and scheduling out my day usually backfires and ends up in me doing nothing. But if I approach it from the identity strategy and tell myself: "I am a good student and want to be seen as a good student. I want people to view me as smart and capable, and people who complete their work on time are seen as smart and capable" that motivates me to complete my schoolwork. Other main strategies she suggests for rebels are based in uniqueness (in my case doing exceptionally well on an assignment separates me from the crowd) and figuring out the "why" behind what you're doing (in my case completing work on time will help me get better grades and getting better grades will lead me to more opportunities in life and etc). Here are a couple helpful links that I have bookmarked! gretchenrubin.com/2017/08/four-tendencies-rebels-habits gretchenrubin.com/2015/04/how-does-a-rebel-change-habits-one-rebels-clever-solutions Hope this helps!

Also I try not to tell people what I plan on doing and just complete the tasks or start changing habits quietly because often even if it's something I really wanted to do, as soon as I feel like someone else is expecting me to do it my motivation disappears. actually this is making a lot of sense now, in the past when i tried to stop biting my nails the longest id get without biting was 3 months. and i just kept thinking i wanna bite, i wanna bite. i could never keep them unpainted because of the fact i knew the second they were bare id dive into them. im over my three month mark. its exactly 137 days of no nail biting. ive tried in the past to use acrylics, i tried gel nail polish, ive tried the nail polish that tastes bad, ive tried them all multiple times, ive tried to quit for someone else's event but never once did i quit for myself. until now. i quit because i saw the benefit in it, i wanted it, not just saying i wanted it but like i put in the effort and work to want it. for the first month or so while they grew yes, i painted them with regular polish but after that ive been bare for 2 months. i dont need it anymore. its not a thought that crosses my mind. i got really picky about who does my nails (i never go to salons anymore i have my own mini salon at home because i learned to do my own nails if i want gel or designs), i learned how to file nails the way i want them to be (this is trial and error, but i never clip or cut always file). this video makes sense as to why it stuck with me now and not all those previous years. which im now gonna also try to use it to fix my sleep schedule. i have horrible sleep times. but im really motivated to sleep early and wake up early to take a swim every morning. before i was like i wanna sleeeeeep more, i love my bed. but now i wanna get into the pool before my niece of nephew does have some alone time to swim laps, and then do my work. etc.

I have started living my life with some rich habits for 7 days.. mentally and physically both.. then suddenly I realize one thing that what was my past life and what life am I living within this 7 days. I really think that we don't need to trick our brain to do things we want rather than we need to teach our mind the right thing and see the truth.. not the excuses.. after knowing this truth of my life I almost quit my every kind of bad habits, at least trying to do it.. and it became really very easy to deal with.. when you know the difference between the two types of habits. One which creates a bad aura and the other one which creates a good vibes around you. You'll definitely pick the good vibes one no matter how much tough is this to do.. that's how I think you need to make your mind intelligent and wise to choose the right habits at the right time without any load of self-discipline and willpower. This formula works for me. (It's not that easy I agree but this is actually the permanent way to deal with).. stay consistent.

I agree with you completely. But I actually didn't watch this video but felt it. Since mid of April, I started to make myself disciplined. here is my story, At an interval of 1-2 weeks, I always came back to zero and made some "perfect" routine like "perfect morning routine", "perfect skin regime", "how topper scores" etc. I always felt I am forcefully doing things and I don't enjoy doing those. these all "perfect" routines or disciplined video made you think that you must do everything on these "perfect" time but the moment you failed to maintain those timings (you will fail) on real-life you feel that, "you are the worst", "you can never achieve anything in life", "discipline is the only way and you can't be that", "you have to start again from zero". every time I felt disgusted about myself and this is running in a loop till date. It is the mindset that you need to change. There must be one strong "why" but that mustn't be "this is what every successful people did". We never heard from any speech stating, "I followed that video or another successful man told me this is you should do" but they realized themselves that "these habits are needed for my own benefit"," I should exercise because health is wealth". and that eventually made them disciplined. it is not like " one night they decided that from the next morning they are going to be productive and disciplined" these mindsets can only give you frustration and "self-loath". thank you for this video. you are a life saver.

Thank you so much for this video! It made me analyze the reasons I'm not successfully building the habits I want and part of it was definitely using the excuse of "I'm not disciplined enough"

My self discipline is being able to only have 2 cups a coffee a day, jog only for 5 mins, trying to let my laundry take care of itself is the hardest thing to work on with my self discipline. I always tend to intervene and wind up washing and folding it :( Your getting me more motivated though

She can't be trusted, folks. 1. She has a foreign accent. All the bad guys in the movies have foreign accents. 2. She doesn't drink coffee (that's deviant behavior). 3. She QUIT coffee... so she's a quitter... 4. And shes's a girl AND attractive. We all know what that means... ;) All that aside, brilliant video. "Focus your discipline on the initiation" is probably the best advice I've heard in a long time. It goes right along with making the habit easy and removing obstacles. Well done.

I needed this today! I did read Atomic Habits and The Power of Habit but haven't been able to keep up with things. Rephrasing it as "solving the puzzle" and being more open about the form of the habits makes it way more exciting than trying to summon self-discipline for something that's not working :- )

I have struggled so much with the concept of discipline - I say that it is one of my biggest flaws when it comes to keep habits (especially when it comes to working out or eating healthy) so this video really helped me as a way to rethink my life and how I picture things - thank you so much!

Two months ago, I abandoned discipline in favor of motivation. They are total opposites, motivation being 'I do this because I want to' as opposed to discipline 'I do this because I have to'. It's hard to force a grown-up to do things they don't really feel like doing, and the reason they don't is because they don't value the results of making the effort. I had to change my mindset about a lot of things, no longer considering the negative consequences of NOT doing things, but rather the positive consequences of doing them. A practical example: "I don't like living in a dirty, messy apartment. Therefore I'm forcing myself to tidy on a regular basis even though it's boring". That's reliant on discipline. And the motivational way of thinking: "I really like living in a neat, clean apartment. As such, I don't mind doing some occasional cleaning to feel good about it every day". I apply this to exercise and studies as well.

I've been angry with myself for not being able to develop daily habits...but after watching this, I realise I still get most things done at the end of the week, so I've more of a weekly-schedule rhythm rather than daily. And poor me has been berating myself all this time. Thank you for the much needed eye-opener and self-acceptance. I plan to help my students understand some of these key points too.

Discipline isn’t something you have... it’s something you do. I appreciate that you recommend adapting the approach can get us to the same results as someone else who implements behaviours in a different order or at a different time or pace.

I would describe motivation as the thing people "just wish they had more of." Discipline is the answer, not motivation - I would argue what you talked about during this video was actually discipline, framed in a healthy way. Discipline is the opposite of giving up, but reliance on motivation will result in feeling bad about yourself or giving up on things. Self-loathing is entirely separate and does not stem from discipline, but from self-critique!

In real life, my friends come to me for advises, I motivate and guide them. But now I found myself in a loop that I am not happy. In the recommended videos -which I normally don't watch- I saw this and I am happy that I watched it. I normally do what you say in the video, but I needed to be reminded why I should keep those habits (the first step habit). Thank you!

Recently I've felt like just forcing myself to do stuff wasn't working anymore. I felt like I needed to be kinder and more understanding of myself. But you know that phase between not knowing something and being able to express something? I was between those two stages. I had some idea about what I was doing, but I didn't know enough about it to put it into words and back it up by arguments. This video honestly made me feel a lot better. I no longer feel in between those two stages of knowledge and I am no longer just sort of trying to walk around in the dark. This video made things much more clear to me. Thank you!

it's interesting, the way self-discipline was talked about in this video is how i thought of the word motivation, something i shud HAVE, to be able to do something while i thought of self-discipline as something i build up overtime by showing up regardless of what i feel, this is cool though 👌

There is also a video from Mel Robins which inspired me today. She basically said that the key for change are your feelings because it is your feelings which influence your decisions. When you feel good, you'll naturally work out, sleep well, keep the house clean and eat healthy. That's just our natural behaviour unless we are not sabotaging ourselves through negative thoughts and feelings of inferiority and stress.

Amazing video, I think this describes what I have been doing for the last weeks. I have in my past tried so many things, like really studying for Uni, working out/eating healthier and caring for mental health. I often failed and beat myself up like crazy, but just recently I adopted a new way of approaching things. Now I am going more by trial and error, finding out what works and what not. But hearing you made me feel so great, like I am on the right track, this keeps me going. Thank you so much, you found yourself a new subscriber!
