hey chris, my name is brian (23) and i am about to finish welding school in a few months. ive been busting my butt to practice and improve as much as i can and your videos have helped me out a lot along the way. im always able to learn at least one thing from your videos and also like to hear you talk about the welding trade in general and not just tips and tricks to be a better welder. that being said i would love it if you made a video about things you wish you wouldve done differently early on in your career, or advice for the new guys to keep in mind early on, so that they can be successful later. i appreciate what you do, keep making great videos and have an awesome, awesome day!

Your right about the pocket knife, I had to use one on my tiger hood once just to get the lenes the typical 2x4 lens to fit vs having the standard lens, the standard lens is nice but I like my auto lens way more, more convenient now a days. I also chopped my pipeliner down some to make it lighter on my head for work especially since I wear a hard hat but ever since than it's been a big help but I may eventually put a pice of leather on it

I only do hobby welding around my house but I prefer the larger lens because I have wider viewing field with them; not just of my work and work area but of the front of my garage/house where I do the bulk of my welding. I've even been considering buying a new helmet with the even larger lenses they've come out with since I bought my current one years back. The solar strip likely recharges the battery while you're welding too since welding produces high intensity light and the solar cell turns light back into electrical energy. At least that would be my assumption.

I have a couple shop hoods that have me huge lense. I like them when welding in places where you cant get your head in to look straight at where your welding. It comes in more when doing implement repair and things like where you might have to get into really tight areas.

Another awesome video! I myself went through the phase of wanting the big lens years back, but as i got older I found that added more weight or something but after 8 or 9 hrs my neckseemed to hurt more than if i used my pancake or one of my pipeliner hoods, plus just seemed to make the hood more bulky, but everyone has their preferences I always tell the new guys use what you are comfortable with.

@@TaylorWelding yeah. I never liked them due to too much reflection but had a friend that liked them for tight spots. I have put a dark lenses in my cutting goggles when a hood won't fit. I like my 2x4 flip so I can grind but I feel like it effects visibility because their is another screen to clean(because the grinding). On the big lenses I like it for sharing a hood because you don't have to adjust as much but it also kind of messes with your consistency. Thanks for the video 🤙
@bikesfightback
@bikesfightback 7 месяцев назад
Nice video highlighting everything... You forgot the fact that it can adjust to be closer or further away from your face. Like if you have a big half mask respirator underneath... Anyways..i got this exact same hood a few months ago myself. I was amazed at how close to the chop of my old pipelines it was. And I love the headgear! That lens is out of this world good. I use it almost every day and haven't found a fault yet 👍

I’ve had a tefuawe Len for a while really like it. I wear glasses and can’t weld without them. I’ve try a lot of different hoods and lens and the best I’ve come up with it a sugar scoop with the tefuawe Len. I’ve got a pancake for welding out side and ended up buying Tom Waters glasses to use with it. And it really takes some getting use to because my glasses are bifocals.

I use both size lenses and like the big and wide for some tight space work where I can't get my head in the exactly right spot but close enough that I can see the weld in the corner of the big lense. Maybe a pancake would work good for those cases, not sure.

Hi Chris, i wanted to let you know why i have a lincoln viking 3350 hood with a big lens in it. I do a lot of structural welding in a shop with dual shield. I know you pipe welders think thats easy welding but i find my self in a lot of very tight positions welding out of position where i cant move my head to see, but if i use my big lens hood i can see an extra 3 inches and weld till my puddle is out of the sight of my hood. I hope that makes sense. Most of the time i use a tiger hood with a passive shade 11 in, but that lincoln hood is nice for tight spots plus it has a built in light which is really nice for those dark corners.

The question about the big lens shields. I wear progressive eyeglasses and when i use the 4x5 lens i don't need a cheater lens i can nust look through the bottom of the lens. I dont really like using one much now because a 4x5 glass lens is very heavy

Hey Chris, how about plasma cutting? There's an arc, but we're not looking right at it. I'm going to try my plasma cutter today. Video idea-show us how you fit a balsa box to your face. Also that the further you get your head "into the box" of a pancake hood, the wider viewing angle you'll have. This could help with neck issues. And that's why I like the big ports on a hood, we don't have to be as accurate with our flipping down of the hood or pre-arc positioning (with conventional lens-as I learned). Also gives even more ability to move our focus without craning our necks. I'm still getting used to the automatics. My CMR Fab pancake with Tefuawe auto + cheater is getting the most use at present, but I have to "blink" to safely start a low-amp TIG arc.
@chrisholifield8571
@chrisholifield8571 7 месяцев назад
Ive got a tefuawe lens just like that. Best lens ive had yet. Ive used miller and arc one which are also pretty good, but they flash me when im tig welding in tight spots (pipe racks, against a wall, etc) i can adjust the sensitivity and delay on the tefuawe and haven't been flashed since.
@TaylorWelding

@wadepatton2433

I bought a Tefuawe for my pancake and love it, but I also bought their mask deal to try out. The strap was way too short for me and Tefuawe responded to my email this morning saying "Hey, we'll make you a longer strap". So I just sent them the measurements. My head ain't that big either! (7 3/8). So I've not tried their mask product yet, but do like their lens in the pancake. I did get flashed once and I'm not sure why because I have LED lights that will engage the sensors. I'm still getting used to automatics. Actually prefer the headgear in my old Forney over all the new stuff--it's much easier on/off than the "flippy" jobs--and the pivot holds better than any others when tipped up. I'm going to put an auto in it as well--it's just so predictable I prefer it. Yeswelder sent me their latetest/greatest hood and it's okay, but I'm not using it right now.
@wadepatton2433
@wadepatton2433 7 месяцев назад
And they've already said "no problem" that they'll get it out in a few days. I might buy the scoop too! I might even go without the flip-up. Flip-ups are redundant when the lens is automatic. Update: Scoop is on order. And the longer strap is on the way.

@MBwelding
@MBwelding 7 месяцев назад
I was just looking at these lenses. I haven’t tried the auto ones yet in the 2x4, I do have an auto hood that has the bigger 3x4 or whatever it is that I use in the shop for fab work. But I use my pancake out in the field on repair work or whatever for the same reasons you said no glare,and honestly I don’t notice much difference in the field of view when I’m working. I do think that pipeline hood you just showed is really snazzy though with the cup on the back of the head and that little lock in the up position I bet it’s real comfortable after it’s been on your head a few hours.

Man I got a serious question for you. In your opinion a lap joint or a butt joint which do you think is stronger? For context some guy at work who’s not a welder was slapping some guards together for machines using expanded metal and 1/16 u channel. I asked why didn’t they miter the ends for a nice 90deg finish instead of just lapping em? I know it’s not a big deal but, I said there both as strong if I weld em right the guy debated me saying the lap joint was stronger and I said that butt joint would be just as strong. Whatdaya think?
