I think you should do a series where you instruct us how to set up organization system for each type of bug, BY ROOM. Like, this is how you organize a butterfly bathroom, this is how you organize a ladybug closet, that kind of thing. My husband is a butterfly and his bathroom is always a mess. I am a bee and I don't know how to set up systems for him.

The best thing I did for my butterfly son was to add hooks. Hooks near his laundry hamper for things that had been worn, but not necessarily needed to be washed. Hooks in the bathroom for things he was taking off and putting on. Hooks for towels. Then if the hooks were full, he needed to deal with it. I know it sounds silly, but it really worked for him (he was 24 at the time).

@@barbborja1910 I put hooks in the bathroom for my daughter to hang her used towel since she didn't want to use the basket I have for dirty towels. It didn't work. I can got to the bathroom and pick up the towels off the floor and put them in the basket only for her to pull them out onto the floor. She has autism and it will take consistency her.

Go big. Big tray for stuff on counter. He dumps, you move tray to clean. Drawers, bigger baskets. He will drop and go. Do not use little organizers for anything. Butterfly will just drive you Bonkers Mrs. Bee. He organizes by big bucket method. Maybe buy pretty baskets not actual buckets but you know…Organize only your personal stuff like a happy buzz-buzz. ❤😂

Thanks to Cas, I learned that I am a butterfly and had to "unlearn" my cricket upbringing. As a bee, you understand that your husband needs to see his things, which is already helpful. What I learned about being a butterfly, is that it is mostly about how easy it is to put things away so I don't leave them out. So nothing with lids - I tried bins that are see througy with lids and it absolutely wasn't working. For everything on the counter (toothbrushes, comb, everyday stuff), I have one of these shower caddies now (that people usually use in the bath or shower for their shampoo, shower gel, etc). It has holes underneath, so can drain and when I clean, all I need to do is move the caddy. They can actually also be a compromise between bees and butterflies since they also some with compartments and even one side having several compartments and the other side only one big compartment. The other thing I have are over the door hangers everywhere. Those are also a great compromise between bees and butterflies because there can be some categories but it's still really easy to put things away. I have mesh ones for the bathroom and bigger stuff is in there, such as hair dryer Btw, the over the door hangers with small pockets over the pantry door are just perfect compromise between bees and butterflies for all those seasonings/herbs. Easy to find everything even when the butterfly just puts it back wherever but easy enough for the bee to do some small micro organizing/grouping together. Anyway, I agree - such a series would be amazing. I struggled so much in the beginning after finding out how I organize what to do so it would work for my family. I actually first thought that I am a bee but only when setting things up for my ladybug husband and butterfly kids, did I realize that I actually like macro organization for most things. That's why we have a lot of bee/butterfly compromises now 😊

Cass, you don’t give yourself enough credit! Does that producer understand that you built a whole following with this system? Your system changed my whole view of organization. As someone who has followed your channel from the beginning, I feel that the explanation of visual v hidden; macro v micro organisation style made the most sense for me. And also taking your quiz with a specific space in mind. I am a cricket at work; a bee in my study; and a butterfly in my living room. EDIT: And I also have been diagnosed recently (at age 50) with ADHD Inattentive type as a result of your video mentioning your own diagnosis. I really thank you for that Cas.

Thisss!!!!!! Plus: - Visual vs hidden (pegboards and open shelving vs cabinets) - Macro vs micro organizing (aka easy to put away vs easy to find) - Aesthetic-focused vs functionality-focused (which I find is different than visual/hidden). I like things behind doors or in drawers, but they must be super easy to find. I don't mind folding, putting away, etc. because when I'm in an ADHD rush to get things done and leave the house or have company over or whatever, I need to find stuff immediately. Taking the quiz was confusing for me because I often selected visual, when my answer really is hidden (but very visual once uncovered). For items used daily, I like them at point of performance, functionality over aesthetics for me. I do macro organizing if I am dealing with a few items and micro organizing if there's a lot of things within a general category. I also feel like it matters how much "inventory" you have in your house... Do you tend towards minimalism or towards maximalism. The clutterbug matrix was super helpful, as well as the videos organizing the same space for the different bugs. Without those, I might still be lost.
@chelseaoconnor3261
@chelseaoconnor3261 15 дней назад
@@mendozasyl yes! These are some excellent points. Functional vs aesthetic is a big one that I agree is very different than visual/hidden. Everything needs to be functional for me as well. My mom is the opposite, which is funny because she’s a cricket. But she will buy an organizer if the look of it appeals to her, whereas I have to think about okay where exactly will this go? What purpose will it serve? Is it functional for that location and that purpose? So I end up with a combination of hidden and visual organizers based on the functionality. And then absolutely agree on things also depend on whether you lean more towards minimalism or maximalism with inventory. I collect books, DVDs, coffee mugs, scarves, etc. so my inventory ends up leaning towards the maximalism side much more and because of that there are certain areas where I have to say, my inventory with this is too much to function in its current state, so I need to adjust and figure out a new system. For coffee mugs that looks like having a dedicated coffee corner in my dining room where I can display my collection of mugs. For DVDs that looked like getting a new shelf with our most watched movies on the open shelves and less watched movies behind cabinet doors. Scarves it looked like dedicating a little more space on my accessories wall in my closet (trust me it sounds more luxurious than it is lol) to be able to have them readily available to choose on any given day. I think the clutter bug system is wonderful and a huge stepping stone for so many of us, but I agree that each person still has a little more work to do in fine tuning their organization to suit these categories plus ones I’m sure we haven’t thought of yet.

I'm a pretty significant bee, but decades of untreated ADHD have pulled a lot of butterfly into the picture. In the past year, I've finally figured out that I I won't maintain systems that require un/restacking. So while I love cube bins, I can't have layers of things inside it (unless they're all vertical), and I won't remove/replace lids routinely. Vertical stacking is great as long as they are open front bins or drawers. For putting things BACK, I have to be able to do it one-handed. I also have some things in multiples so that they can live all the places they're used. For instance, I have at least four pairs of scissors and three tape measures with different permanent homes through the house so that there is always a pair convenient for certain tasks. My mom is the ladiest ladybug that ever did ladybug, and it drives me bonkers to not know where stuff has gone.

Fellow bee here. I typically save vertical stacking for things I rarely use and storage cubes for lots of small items in a common category. (For example, all the random girls' Bible class craft items get separated into individual containers and those are dumped into the same cube) Labeling the random boxes shoved on the top shelf of the closet goes a long way when you only open them twice a year.

My mom's a butterfly and I'm a cricket. My room as a kid was always that one room that looks very different from the rest of the house and I'd get anxious being in the rest of the house because of the "constant mess" that I now understand was just her way of organizing. She always knew where everything was and would notice if you moved something from one pile to where it actually went. I'd rather "reset the house to baseline" every day while my mom would rather keep piles for each project she's working on until the projects are completely done (even if that means having five projects at once and still starting another). Now that I'm an adult, it's funny to watch her visit my house. I forgot she used to leave paper towels everywhere because "we can use it again later" even though she gets a new one every time so I end up throwing away four at once when she leaves. As a cricket, my half-used paper towels go right next to the roll.

I have to put things back where they belong (and behind a closed door or drawer) or else I feel unsettled and chaotic, like I can’t relax or focus on anything at all until the “mess” is gone, but I also need to be able to see everything I own of a category at once because if I can’t see it, it doesn’t exist.

I have made many changes to accommodate the butterfly in the family! I found ChatGPT to be very lacking in insight compared to what you have offered in your explanations and videos. There was absolutely no mention of the visual and micro/macro concepts, which I understand to be central to the Clutterbug philosophy , and it’s how I usually explain the tendencies. The notes about the strengths and weaknesses of the Bee sounded like Cricket stuff to me. It was very interesting to hear another “person’s” take on the four bugs, but I much prefer YOU!

That sounds really interesting, but I doubt you could collect any useful data as both systems have people typing themselves or self reporting, and people struggle with that in both! A lot of people seem to think about the types as aspirational vibes, so that's how you get someone saying they're a Cricket INFJ, when in fact they're a Butterfly ISFP. A lot of people also have a hard time figuring out what the average is and seeing patterns of behaviour, and then comparing themselves to that, so they feel they relate to all types equally while they could probably be easily typed by an outsider with good pattern recognition. /Bee INTP

I have an intolerance of having to go through several layers of organization (or a drawer full of unrelated things) in order to lay my hands on what I want. It has to be on a shelf, on the wall, or in a drawer, where I can instantly see it. I can feel the rage building when I have to take a lid off of something.

That's Me! Even our kitchen junk drawer needs to have everything in it arranged s9 that it can be seen and accessed as soon as I open it. I thought I was a butterfly/lady bug hybrid because I really don't want or need super detailed categories. But, I do need things in some order. And it has to look neat. I don't mind taking a minute or 2 to put things away right away or at the earliest opportunity, if taking that time means easy access when I need it again. I just hate spending huge chunks of time creating those categories in the first place. So, alot of the cabinets and drawers that I've already de-cluttered, are still in need of organising in my preferred way. What I've been doing for that is taking my zone cleaning sessions, and when I do a 15 minute deep clean in a zone, if I get inspired to do a quick re-orgsnisation of the spot I'm cleaning, I'll do it so that I don't have to come back later to do it. It's a slower pr9cess than re-organising a whole room or area, but it seems to be w9rking for me.

Adam Savage talks about "orders of retrievability". Things you can immediately grab are 1st order, open a drawer then grab is 2nd order, etc. I've found that super helpful when thinking about organization!

@blazertundra lol I'm so glad there was no argument about where the go! Yes, I have few exceptions to the kids and closed containers. Needlework tools, food and sugar, logically need to be fully contained. That's about it. But that's just common sense no matter what your style. Trust me though. If it wasn't necessary to close those containers, they'd all be lids off and open bags lol.

Cass, Ive been watching your videos a long time. Love you, love your message. I couldn't say for sure one style that fits me. But, I've still learned so much from you. I've learned that I can choose how I want to organize my space, based on what works for me and those who share my space. There's more than one right way to do it. Also, now that I'm older, I see a progression through the years. My mom called me a clutterbug 50 years ago 😂. Maybe thats what drew me to you. My home is pretty clean and organized these days. I've learned over the years how to manage that. You give people so many valuable tools to help them on their journey. And, may I say, you may not consider yourself articulate, yet you have given a lot of people a whole vocabulary on cleaning and organizing. Girl, you are rocking it! A tool, i. e. AI, is nothing without someone to build it and someone to weild it. You have been on both sides of that tool. Thats pretty cool! Stopping now, the rhymes are weird. 😂

I too am a cricket. I love detailed and functional organization, much of it hidden. Although my home feels zen (others who walk into it say how good they feel in it), I am nowhere near a minimalist. I have beautiful art and special items in every room. I enjoy flowering plants and bookshelves arranged with plenty of books and attractive accessories. I love to use color and pay attention to the balance and flow of it from room to room. I care about aesthetics in each room, even the laundry room and bathrooms. Although I need that (ahem) perfect organization, my soul would shrivel in a minimalist home.

@@christineupchurch3714That's why I like Joshua Becker's definition of "minimalism" so much: "the intentional promotion of the things that bring you joy and the removal of those that do not" - nothing about how many numbers or colors are allowed or anything like that, just promoting things that make you happy and removing things that don't, and what those things are will vary from one person to the next.

I am a butterfly. I've always been curious/envious of the super organized spaces seen in magazines, but could not even begin to make those skills work for me. Now I'm designing a new kitchen and I've figured out that a way more casual approach will work for me. Instead of planning where everything will fit and having dividers made for every drawer to fit each thing I own (and driving myself crazy), I'll just have some inserts ready to separate things-- like my flatware in one tray instead of trying to sort it all out. My pantry along the wall started as open shelves, but needed something to reduce the sunlight hitting my glass containers of food and the visual clutter. So I added doors, but they had to be doors that when opened gave me a maximum clear view of the contents, so I opted for wardrobes with floor to ceiling doors. Now I understand why I have these urges and how to work with them.

I do not want to dig through stuff for hours or even minutes to find my desired item. I cringe at the other 3 types for this reason. But I also love the zen atmosphere in a cricket room, because I can think clearly and feel peaceful. I am definitely a minimalist. I add and display very few artistic, creative, homey, personal, or family-oriented touches in a room to add that homey feel, but it is never overstimulating or distracting. I love peaceful, zen-like rooms with exquisite function. This helps me complete all my projects in record time before all other bug types. I need things more functional than anything else. So I decided to set things up for function. I don't know where this is going to end up, because I like the look of things tidy and in lidded boxes, but can't really make myself put the lid on the box and put things away. The element of taking time to do that makes me really anxious, but so does the cluttered look of strictly functional organizing. I guess I will eventually figure it out. I really like this way of citing the differences between the bug, though. Oh, and here's a funny thing, the interiors of my cabinets and closets are pretty and organized but the outside room is a mess. I don't know what that means.

I’m definitely a combination of a butterfly and a bee. I’m mostly a butterfly, my husband always pokes fun at my side table next to the couch because no matter how big it is or how often we try to tidy it up again, it always ends up covered in crochet projects because that’s where I do most of my crocheting and I’m notorious for getting excited about a new project and starting it before I’ve finished older ones. But my yarn shelf brings me lots of joy because I organized it by color and in such a way that I can easily find whatever yarn I need from my stash. I also have always had a messy room, messy dorm, messy house. But most of the time if you ask me where something is I know exactly where to look to find it. My memory is so selective like that lol At the same time, books and movies have to be alphabetized, spices should be separate from herbs, etc. and I am absolutely a creature of habit like a bee and when things don’t go to plan I break down way too easily lol and very often I struggle with being organized because I want it to be correct and perfect, but I don’t have the capacity in that moment. It’s amazing how well I relate to each. My husband, in the other hand is such a ladybug. He will tidy the table by putting everything in a storage bin to go through and sort at a later date, but at least in the meantime the table is clear 😂 and then I say “where’s our son’s reading log?” And he has no idea lol or he has a drawer set filled with various electronics cords, but they’re all just shoved in there with no real rhyme or reason. But his desk almost always looks clean and clutter free.

Yes! Most people are predominantly one style with a little bit of 9ne or all of the others. Plus, everyone in tge house might be a different style, and in different areas of the home, we ,igut be a little more of one style, and a different style in another area, depending on what the room is used for. Casssays, each of us is on a spectrum of whatever style we are. i'm a bee/lady bug. I'M very visual with alot of things, but also hidden. I am not an extreme micro-organiser with my things, but I do need a bit of order. And even my hidden things in drawers or cabinets need to be easy to seem so clear and open containers and baskets are ideal for me. I am a little bit crickety/lady bug like with my needle work, tools though...lots if sharp objects, and I feel like they need to be very hidden and well-organised. Or they get lost and that's a safety issue. But with everything else, I'm definitely bes/lady bug.

@@emmydollI thought I was a butterfly/lady bug, but I'm now realizing I'm more of a bee/lady bug. Opening a drawer and seeing my clothes just jammed in there in a messy pile stresses me out lol.

Wow! Your reveal at the end was surprising!! It is a bit scary but it is as if you had a class write a report on your Clutterbug thesis and this AI report was from one of your top students. This is just a new presentation of all YOUR ORIGINAL IDEAS!

Finally! I am a "bee" who's been trying to be a "cricket". lol I LOVE organized and clean. Would love to have less, but I LOVE my treasures too much to let go of everything I should. I AM slowly letting go of things, but I just learned that my problems with letting go and trying to deal with all kinds of "changes" is quite normal for me, A BEE! The stress I feel is real, but I know it ok to "let it go, let it go......" ;) Thank you!!!!

I think it was a great explanation. I am either a butterfly with a low clutter threshold, because too much clutter does start to stress me, or I am a ladybug who needs low enough amounts of stuff that I don’t forget what’s behind the door or in the drawers. I do like color and to see my pretty things and if I can’t see it I forget it, but I also get stressed if too much stuff is out on view.

You are so right about how you describe what I want out of a butterfly organization Cas. And you know what isn't working for me at all because of the flexibility that I crave? Labeling 😂 I just constantly change my setup so it always works best for me. The maximum I will do with labeling for my ladybug husband, who DEFINITELY needs his labels, and only when something has been in a certain way for a while, is edding on Painter's tape so it's easy to remove (and no, those labels with chalk don't work because it would require cleaning them, which is just that one step too many which I just won't do). After this video, it's so clear that my character is a bee though. And I really want to organize like a bee but it took me many failed systems to understand that bee is my fantasy organizing self. So the personality you describe for a bee here fits me best. I am a very logical person and perfectionist, don't care abouth esthetics, just want efficiency and thus I love micro categories - so it's not surprising that I would love to be a bee organizer, your description of bee and best fitting organizing style are spot on. But I just don't stick to it, it is just not simple enough for me and my ADHD brain. Since I started my butterfly setups, our home finally looks so much tidier. Although most crickets and ladybugs would probably feel close to a panic attack when entering 😂 thankfully my husband is a kind of ladybug who organizes his stuff in that way but isn't bothered by my visual butterbee stuff So for any ADHDler bees out there - if you are struggling to organize despite Cas' amazing categories, give butterfly organization a try. I found that visual is more important for me than macro-/micro organizing because otherwise it just doesn't exist for me 😂

I am a Cricket and I live alone. Almost everywhere in the house I have bins or boxes that contain my things. But there are 4 areas where I use clear boxes instead. I use Container clear drawer boxes for my shoes, the small items for workout, and my tools and tool things (i.e. nails, screws, glue, etc). I also use 2 clear boxes in my kitchen cupboards because they fit. And I don't mind seeing my things in the clear containers if I have them in cabinets.

I’ve watched you for years, bought all your books, done your courses, and always thought I’m probably a Cricket but it never felt entirely accurate. From this video I am now certain that I’m a Bee. ChatGPT agrees that my Myers Brigg is also a Bee (ENTJ). This has been fascinating to me. Thanks Cass!

I am a bee. Procrastination and perfectionism....totally me. So, on the efficiency front, I don't have a dining room area (small apartment) so I drink my morning coffee in my bedroom. People find it odd (but also genius) that I have a coffee maker in my bedroom, but it streamlines my morning. Also, I had never thought of my clutter as me 'not wanting to make a mistake'. I appreciate this new perspective.

Ive been a ladybug for years shoving things in every small gap I can find, but as I declutter each room and set up organizational systems I am turning into a cricket ... Kind of a hybrid, the spaces that arent done im shoving, but the areas Ive done I am able to maintain and have maintained for at least a year or two...

Great overview. I am mostly butterfly. I stayed in this hotel about two years ago and the closet system was for me. It was open drawers were where I could see everything. I loved it. If I can't see it I forget about it. I haven't purchased a nice chest of drawers to put my daily items in. So, over years of not buying functional pieces has hurt me in getting organized. But, thank you for your work in this area.

I really enjoyed this video about organizing styles with their strengths and weaknesses. So incredible what AI can do when you figure out how to use it. I think it's been 2 years since I took the clutterbug quiz and figured out I'm a bee and my husband is a cricket. It really brings to light why I have been struggling to be more adaptable in a challenging health season and why my focus has been so much on adjusting my systems to work for me in this season.

Cass! I was literally just thinking about the kind of clutter bug I am. I made a mental note to look through your videos for that one video I watched a while back, so I could remember what I am, to help me reorganize my life since I moved recently. I’m in the process of unpacking and am taking this chance to further declutter and properly organize my things. Your video today is a Godsend! 😆💕

It is so refreshing to hear you talk about the differences in people and that we need to organize for how we are (not a one size fits all). Thank you for helping me to feel like I'm not crazy, just my brain works differently...I need to embrace me and organize that way! You are so amazing and a beautiful person who makes me laugh and has increased my vocabulary with so many fun words and phrases. lol

This video has the best explanation yet. I've taken the quiz multiple times with the same result every time. (insanity?) I used to think I identified as a cricket (while never getting cricket as the result of the test). This video explains why I'm not a cricket at all.

I'm a Bee, husband is a Buttrtfly. I have had to designate space for him. There are spaces in our home I don't touch, and when it starts to bug me, I ask him to clean it up, knowing it will take 3 to 4 days for him to do it. Example: I don't have a junk drawer anywhere in our 4000 square 4 floor home. Hubbies spaces are a junk drawer.

The bit about bees being utilitarian. I'm always saying not only should it be easy to put away, it also needs to be easy to get out. I should be able to grab the exact color of embroidery floss I need in seconds, but also be able to put it away in seconds as well. My D&D books are on a bookshelf next to the couch where I do my planning. We don't own closet doors anymore because I won't put things away if I have to open a door to put it there. I also likely won't open the door to take it out either!
