After a lengthy 1-hour row to the boat (a stiff fall breeze and ocean chop is my excuse), we had a pretty spectacular November sailing day. It was a last blast of summer and much appreciated.
Sailing up to Bristol, RI to have the sailboat hauled was a task brightened by the awesome weather. Time to haul the sailboat, take the sails off, taking off some running rigging, and then hauling out the sailboat out of the water was a pretty fun process... although there was some shame involved.
Detailed episode covering the stuffing box and dripless stuffing box here: • Ran-day's Sailboat - ...

Yes...we all miss Captain Q, but his legacy continues beautifully. The original show could not have been nearly as great as it was, without your significant contributions. All that work has served you in good stead. The evolution of the show has been seamless...the work on your boat, the amazing guests and excellent production values, have combined with your honest and contagious enthusiasm for sailing and life, to continue to bring the viewer a wonderful treat with every new episode. I suspect that you had doubts about continuing on as solo master of the show. I know I am not alone in being very pleased that you decided to forge ahead. Thank you Ran-day, for sharing your fascinating passion with us.

When I worked on a schooner we used to call that "Boat Blood". Everyone donated some blood to the boat at some point or other. The Captain said it would bring good luck but I think that was mostly to make us feel better.

@@YachtHunters Yes we r. Just got back from a 3 week trip to get her to her new home port. We set sail from St Petersburg and made it to Stuart FL. We were hoping to make it to Brunswick GA but had to leave her in FL due to multiple weather delays and a faulty alternator. You have to love problem solving to own an old boat. Fortunately for me and the wife I love it.

That's some Crocodile Dundee Knife! Seriously though, November sailing is where it's at in New England. Getting warmer, steady winds, beautiful sunsets, some light night navigation, popping stars, and no one on the water. Last sail last year was the day after Thanksgiving, good to the last drop!

I hauled out on Wednesday Oct. 18. I took the sails off last week on a wind free afternoon. No wind makes it much easier. My boat is a ketch like yours, but it is smaller (36'). Taking the sails off, flaking and bagging them took about 45 minutes, but I have done it around 50 times if you count the times I have remove the sails and all canvas for storms. A tip for taking the jib down - lead the sheets inboard of the shrouds. That helps control the sail if there is some wind and keeps it on deck. Incidentally, I got rid of my wire main halyard many years ago. It looks like you need to change bottom paint. Up here on Mount Desert Island Maine (MDI) I find that Pettit Hydrocoat works well although I have been using Pettit HRT Neptune with very good results for the last three years. I have also had good results with Sea Hawk Monterrey (also water based). Our water is colder than yours which is certainly a factor. By the way I switched to the HRT Neptune because I like water based paints and it is CHEAP. As I am sure you found, prepping for unstepping masts is pretty easy: Remove booms, disconnect electrical wires and if your yard is OK with it, disconnect lower shrouds. Disconnecting the lower shrouds gives the riggers less work to do (= saves you money). I also make sure the cotter pins can be easily pulled out and back off the turnbuckles just before the crew shows up with the crane. The yard I use is inland about half a mile. They use a Brownell hydraulic trailer to haul the boat and transport it to the yard. Since we are going over the road to the yard we unstep the masts right after the boat comes out of the water. This year unstepping took about 30 minutes. I help with the unstepping. My cost to haul out, unstep the masts, transport the boat to the yard and pressure wash the hull came to $823.50 this year. The entire process took from 11:30 AM to 2 PM including a lunch break for the crew. I do use the only yard on MDI that allows DIY.

In the 1960's my dad owned a 29' sloop. It lived in the area of Long Beach CA. A lot of the boar owners in that area had a "boat bath" in the berth. It's a big half bag that floats in the berth and has a draw string opening to allow the boat in and out. While the boat was in the bath chemicals were added that killed the marine life. The boat bottom stayed relatively clean. Are such devices still in use today? Part of me envies you your boat ownership. Part of me remembers the constant chores and the envy lessens. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 9 месяцев назад
Wow… I’ve not heard of that boat bath. I presume those chemicals would be fairly toxic and not accepted today? mostly people hire divers to go scrub the bottom down. I have see a remote underwater scrubbing drone device but don’t know how well it works. I enjoy the chores/projects/puzzles - many things I don’t know a whole lot about… so each thing presents some new learning… some occasional frustration but a good exercise for the brain… and occasionally biceps 😄 cheers, glen!

Randay! I bought my first sailboat! You and captain Q really drilled it into me, you don’t need a big fancy boat to get out and go sailing, I bought a 1967 Morgan 34 centerboard and only paid 3750 for it, she’s by no means perfect but I’ll be sailing very very soon. I am still waiting on a signed can of dinty moors though, it would make a great addition to my boats decor..

If you want to have some more lifespan for your Antifouling, keep the power washer at least 1 foot away from paint and also bearings of the shaft. High pressure washers will take off even paint with good adhesion. The same goes for car paint, teak decks and Gelcoat. These things really damage the surface a lot. As you had got it done, tell the guy who's paying the bill and his job. There are reasons why many boats have the Antifouling coming off and it's not always bad composition of old and new paint.

Absolutely loved being in Westport. Very quiet and scenic and a quick row/motor to the beach. FL Tripp crew is great. Abundance of parking. Reasonable season rates. There are a couple of great restaurants nearby. If you want quiet and pretty this is a great option. a minor issue is the closest provisioning/convenience is about a 15 min drive away… which can be a little inconvenient… and there’s nothing in between except beautiful farm lands. @@HughFike Water Displacement 40 is alcohol and graphite not an oil. This makes it good to use on electrical equipment. But it washes away any oil exposing it to the elements. I don't think it penetrates into the metal and breaks down the metal as was stated, but an oil spray is better in that situation. Or at least oil it after, if wd40 is all you had at the time.

Taking the sails down while the boat is on the hard on blocking and stands is quite risky since a gust of wind at the wrong time can blow the boat over and potentially knock adjacent boats over like dominoes. So, as Randall says, it is an insurance matter.

@@YachtHunters yes, do that and get rid of that winch. If you go to dyneema, use one of the lines with dyneema core and a polyester cover. Put a decent self tailing winch on the mast or run the halyard aft to a cabin top self tailing winch. I really like Andersen winches.

More tattered opinions; WD40 is the best cleaner for stains in leather and pleather seats. I use a soap afterwards to remove the residue. Diesel fuel or kerosene, is a cleaner lubricant (great for bike chain). I wipe clean and follow up with penetrating oil (highly refined). Silicone collects less dirt and applies cleaner, but I don't mix it with other grease. I prefer it on track and cable. (Don't replace anything that works)

If there was I might be sitting on a floating money printer!! Although, then I’d probably spend it all on boat parts 🤷‍♂️
