UNSTEPPING MASTS & HAULING A SAILBOAT!! Prep & transport!! EP 16

Prepping the sailboat for hauling, I was under a time constraint. This was about 3 days of work: unstepping the masts, removing and securing the standing rigging and running rigging in addition to the electrical cables running through the masts. As I got close to the transport date, we realized I also needed to remove more things... due to height restrictions.
I really enjoyed being able to dig in to see how some of these things go together in this old sailboat.... something I wasn't quite able to do while the sailboat was in the water.

Big thanks to those viewers that caught the audio issues earlier... in fact, if you were one of those eagle-eyed viewers, shoot me an email through yachthunting.com and I'll send you a little thank-you in the mail. I wrestled with Adobe products for a few hours before finally getting the audio back in there.... so thanks for the feedback - it's always appreciated!!

I wasn’t sure what I’d find. Spar tire makes a product like you mentioned that makes a lot of sense but it’s also up around $190 or so… so a couple of wood chunks and some tape was what some other frugal sailor opted for. I’m thinking I might try to 3D print a rubbery collar and seal it with a nice bead of marine sealant like 4200… undecided at the moment. Cheers

A lot of boats have their radar cable cut and attached to a terminal block near the base of the mast. with older radars the only tricky wire to cut is a small coax signal cable. The new type radars without the old style tube radar are easier to do that on since they don't have the tiny signal coax and they don't have as many wires.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 8 месяцев назад
that makees a ton of sense to me. there was some writing online about how you shouldn't splice the radar cable as it could introduce interference and corrosion so I assume that's why they gave me an extra 30 feet of cable on there!! thanks, Todd!

I am a big fan of the Nonsuch line of boats with a very sturdy stepped mast and no support rigging. The boom is a windsurfer style as well so overall very simple. The mast is thick spun aluminium and being stepped the stress points are distributed within the deck and hull with no stress points along the side decks. Yes it has its compromises but its simplicity and structural integrity are much appreciated.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 8 месяцев назад
some of those were carbon fiber masts too as I believe they were an early adopter. owners just love them... and the simplicity is very appealing for those just getting into sailing. cheers, jeff!!

That makes me glad I have deck stepped masts and a wireless radar (except for the power leads that plug into a deck plug. I don't know why you don't want to share costs. This year (Oct. 18) I paid $983.50 to have my boat hauled on a Brownell trailer, unstep both masts (ketch like yours), transport the boat to the yard, store the masts, pressure wash the hull and put the boat into the shed for the winter. The shed (unheated) costs $55 a foot for the winter. The yard allows me to work on the boat as long as I work on the boat only during hours when the yard is open and follow all safety precautions. To stop water ingress at chainplates; Drill oversized holes at deck penetration point, fill the holes drilled with epoxy and chop strand mixture, after curing, drill new chainplate holes, then paint the area with barrier coat, primer and epoxy paint, eight coats is best, reinstall chainplates with bedding! Stainless Steel 316 or better uses oxygen in the air for retaining its anti-corrosian properties. Anywhere the stainless steel surface is limited to free flowing air/oxygen mixture; this is the point of corrosian!

My friend has a boat with a misen mast and always wondered how that mast "stays" and not goes forward. Yous actually looks like it has an angle going a little back, or is this an optical illusion or camera lens phenomenon? Is wiring even necessary in masts anymore with solar and wireless tech these days. I would love to get a solar anhor light, solar steaming light, etc on my mast. the only think I can think of that would need wiring is antenna and radar.
