I love the copper on the outside idea too!!!! It would enhance the "old timey age" look of the tub. Because way back when in days gone by, copper was used for all sorts of household things, so having the outside of this tub be copper like the entryway ceiling, in my opinion would showcase this tubs age and look great....and yes..shiny black feet! Not sure if they've already purchased (cannot remember) the sink to go into that "vanity" but a copper sink would tie together the room - warm glow in an evening bath too!
My brother hauls these tubs out of farm fields, sand blast and refinishes them with a commercial spray. I had him look at your video and said use a HEAT GUN! Also said there are no visible chips or stains so do not refinish or you will be redoing it in 5 years. The blue was a color back then like a Tiffany blue!
I have used a wire sanding wheel or brush to get into those hard to reach curves. It attaches to my drill. I believe you can also get them to fit your angle grinder.
careful with messing with the feet of the tub, when you go to do anything with them be sure to attach them well to the tub. we use to have one and our very tiny daughter sat on the edge of the tub while getting into it and a leg fell off of the tub and it tipped over and busted off the pipes, thank goodness it didn't hurt my daughter.
I went on Ebay, and there are a lot of old feet for the tubes there. I'm so proud of you trying to not spent more money and doing it yourselves. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Don't try to do it all at once. Come back to it later. The puppy was so cute. It's just as cute as the new piggies. Happy Valentine
Happy Valentine's Day to you and your family ❤ As I'm watching you explain that your sander is not reaching where the walls and the bottom of the tub meet, I'm thinking that Amazon has a portable sandblasting gun that MIGHT work, for those rounded spaces... just food for thought and I totally get your desire to bring everything back, to it's former glory 💪💪🙏🙏 I'm glad you're pacing yourself Elysia and have a wonderful evening!
You can buy a cheap compressor equipment and still be ahead and use quartz sand, while learning to sandblast. It’s not hard I helped my brother back in the 80s with his car that we sandblasted. We took all the paint off the car down to metal.
Try using a Bremell or something similar to do the tight areas maybe. I spent a month doing my bathtub, 20 yrs ago, and it’s stood the test of time. I painted mine on the outside with Hammerite gun metal grey with gold feet. I loved mine when l did it and I still love it today, nothing nicer then laying back in a deep old tub and relaxing. Good luck in your endeavour.
Well done for all your effort, you done well and should be proud that you are saving this beautiful 100 year old bath, it is going to look amazing once finished and bathing looking out of that window is just a dream for us all to have , congratulations on all your hard work. love watching the English family such an inspiration 👏👏
I think a sage green with gold or copper feet. Green is such a relaxing color, especially if you add plants. Maybe copper ceiling. They make wallpaper that looks like old ceiling tiles. Paste it and it should hold. Then paint it copper.
I love Citristrip gel for removing paint. It does a really good job on multiple layers. And it doesn't have harsh fumes. Amazon carries it too. Good luck!
My son the painter suggested that this tub may have been painted with oil paint. You may want to try a lacquer thinner in a small area to see if it may work in removing the old paint. Be sure to ventilate the room, the smell is very strong. Good luck
I like the idea of painting the outside of the tub a color rather than leaving it white. When I was house hunting, in one of the homes the outside of the clawfoot tub was painted navy blue and it looked very nice.
You are awesome Elysia! I totally understand the feeling you expressed about wanting to keep the history and integrity of this original tub. When you are soaking in your beautifully restored tub, all the sweat, sore muscles and fatigue will be a distant memory and you will smile and bathe in the satisfaction that YOU DID THIS!
I would totally love to come sand on that tub for a while for you and work out some frustrations. I know it has a whole new life ahead of it’s just being stubborn. If anyone can do it it’s you!
My hubby fixed up an old cast iron tub for me 💜💜 white inside, high gloss black with road gold feet.. it looks amazing on our back verandah in my hanging garden ❤️🇦🇺🌞
I can’t believe you’ve so much sweat equity into the tub!! I would’ve given up at some time before you did. I am guessing what you’re going to do next is a reglazing. Whatever you do, it will turn out well. I’m cheering for you!! ❤
I hope you video the whole process of the tub makeover. I think it will work because you are very good at making things impossible turn out to look amazing.
I have found that Elysia does not do things halfway. She is definitely not someone who will do something just to make it do. So she’s not painting over a banged up tub. I have no doubt that when it’s finished, it will be beautiful, and I just got into the video.
I refinished my MILs old tub about 50 years ago. She sent to England for the paint kit, from Tasmania. It was a lot of work, a 48hour drying time but looked brand new when done. It didn’t look as well worn as yours though. It’s worth it. 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏿🤘🏼💋❤️
Don't be discouraged, just take your time with the older things. I don't think it looks bad if it's not perfect. Just consider the age. I wouldn't throw it away. I would paint it black with gold feet. You'll know what we'll do best for you. I see your heart, I'm with you. Good luck it'll come out great.😊😊😊
Move the electric heater to the wall under the window and put the bathtub along the left wall. Paint the outside of the tub in a color coordinated to the rest of your bathroom color scheme.
Hi Elysia Philip & boys,it is worth your time & effort Elysia.I hope you can get it all off! Bless you for your hard work. Have a great week English family. My parents had a tub like this.❤️
We bought a small sandblaster to remove the paint and imperfections from our thirty-one foot 1961 Cris Craft steel hulled roamer boat. It was work but it did a fabulous job. The cost for the small sandblaster wasn't too bad either. Sometimes you can find them from people who bought them for a job and no longer want them. Best of luck to you and Phillip.
The kind that has lye. I watch the guy that restores old iron skillets. He has a lye vat he dips them in but says you can use oven cleaner if you're just restoring one skillet. He sprays them in a plastic trash bag and then turns the bag inside out to seal skillet inside for at least 24 hours. Then washes it off.
I believe the product used on your tub may "gel coat" paint. It's s a marine paint and I know it's also used on fiberglass tanks. Sanding it smooth, maybe the only way to fix your tub. Your on the right track.
This type of tub is worth it, I had a friend with one and she let me come there periodically to use it! Kind of strange but I really enjoyed using it! Give it your all!
My Great Aunt and Uncle saved their tub several years ago. I called my cousin to see how. There was a man that came to their home and used some kind of blaster on it. She thought it was a sand blaster. They had to hang heavy duty plastic around the tub and door to contain the mess. She said as much as she hated cleaning it up, it was so worth it!
I think the blue color is the original first coat. The white is the top coat of paint, and the yellowish color is the glaze like layer they put on it to finish it. The yellowish color is probably because the years and years of dirt stains in that layer of glaze.
I have re done my bathtub a few years ago / and yes, it’s a lot of work!! Mine wasn’t as old as yours , but there were cracks in it that I had to repair first 😳. It turned out beautifully in the end - but it wasn’t soooo easy . Good work, Elisha ! It’s going to be fantastic when you’re done !!! As always ❤
I soooo miss having a big old tub like that. I hate the newer tubs, either not long enough for me to relax and soak in or not deep enough to hold enough water to cover me. The old claw foots are and we had 3 boys back then and in a pinch could fit all 3 in for a bath if needed. Thinking you might need one of those foam sanding pads for the curved places know they work on curved wood surfaces.
I totally get your desire to keep the tub and finish it beautifully and be able to look back at all you've accomplished and be so proud of yourselves. We live in a house we built with our very own two hands in the 1970's and we're still going strong after 56 years of marriage.❤❤❤ I think you and Philip are truly Romantics!
✨❤️ you are working so hard, have you considered using a torch and a stainless steel scrubby ✨🔥✨… heat up the paint just enough to melt it and then, with his paint scraper and a stainless steel scrubby, you should be able to work the most of it out! Good luck✨🔥✨
OK I'm strange I actually like it as it is the powder blue and white yellowish looks like the sky and if you look at it it's a farmhouse chippy style .
Hi Elysia, “She holds Dearly” on RU-vid just redid her tub. She used A razor and Clorox toilet bowl cleaner and something else. It’s worth a watch. This hard work you’re doing! 😅
You really should also be wearing goggles when sanding down the metal tub. Also get serfprep sanding sponges for the awkward slopes. A stronger sander would have helped, or a wire brush on a dremel or drill.
I think it will work! Go for it! Even if you just use it for a little while and later have it sand blasted n the future. I do not think you will have to think it will look good. Can not wait to see, your gong to drive me bonkers waiting but oh the suspense, it is killing me. Get her done. Peace!
As long as it is smooth, don't kill yourself trying to remove the paint. There is a good chance that the reason it was painted was to cover chips and scratches in the original paint. You will NEED a warm bath after all the scrubbing. Time to head over to Mum and Dad's house lol
