Great video. Love you guys. I heard an interesting statement the other day regarding “200” mile days. First of all, how many people have done 200 mile days, for several days in a row? And was it worth the lack of stability and constant sail trimming. I’m beginning to lean toward more stability in a blow and smoother ride while decreasing the possibility of capsizing. I believe on a long passage that comfort and less stress is more important than speed records. Cheers

You two are truly amazing to watch. Both on your own and when you are poking fun with other sailing channel couples. I stumbled across you when you were with the Wynn’s and have watched you since, going back to watch all your videos. You are very well informed, informative and quite funny as well. Very well rounded and I have to say, 100 percent worth the watch. No idea why you haven’t hit the 100K mark yet but, I really hope it happens for you soon. You really deserve it. Cheers and all the best. 👍

Why are you so big on the recessed hatches when they leak 2x as often ?

I completely agree with your statement about "Not new, but well maintained previously owned" . There will seldom be a novice sailor shelling out a $million for a new cat, or mono hull. Therefore for each new $million + cat sold, there will most likely be a used boat for sale. If you like a review of a particular manufacturer, half of your legwork is done. I lean towards Leopard cats, but that's just a personal choice. I find your educated reviews an excellent source of information from experienced sailors. Picking up on things like engine access without standing in the sugar scoop. Who would have thought of falling overboard at midnight. I've never had anyone tell me that happened to them.

Beautiful boat. Good review. Him: Good joinery. Her: Everything else. 😀 I question your Performance criteria for this boat. You compare it to racing catamarans when it is not a racing boat. It is a long distance cruising boat. My question is how does the performance compare to other boats in this class such as the Xquisite? I would suggest you have two categories of Performance: Cruising and Racing. This would give your audience a more apples and apples comparison. Thanks for the review.

I wonder how many cruisers especially on long passages sailing shorthanded under a 24/7 watch system have any interest or energy to sail their home about at break neck speeds feeling every bump in the road as it were. The levels of concentration needed would be exhausting and I think it wouldn't be very long before they'd have a sail plan that only needed a quick look around at intervals while on watch. Men might like the bragging rights of faster boats but their women are dreaming of a bed that doesn't get thrown about and generators, long showers, ice in their drinks, ac's, washing machines, and water makers to water all the pot plants in the saloon. We know who wins those arguments. Women are sensible creatures and what the hell, there'll be room for a bigger fridge and lot more beer in the bilges. One sailing channel says "don't buy a couch" but I think it should be don't buy a "are we there yet" boat.

It's a Discovery, what did you expect. Would like to have seen the engine spaces. Head room in master not so good. Small Nav. station. Hard top above helm is probably an option. Flush hatches needed. Would not look good but I would have forward raked windows in saloon. Meanwhile tyresa's hair looked great and whats his name needs to pull teeth for a year to build the kitty. LOL

Don't forget to look at some Tri's at the boat show! Can't wait to see the reviews of the cats. I think rooms in a boat are like in a tiny house. You get one awesome room, and the others get tacked on as reasonably as possible. Personally, I could care less about a fancy forward cabin, like this owner. But to each their own. On your last comments: Who wants to see old used boats, when you can be seeing brand new ones :) Unless your buying an historic canal boat, let's see some new shiny boats!

So, what have we found out? The huge, really expensive cat has lots of space and a high quality design and finish. Love this series, but think I’d get more from it if the focus was on similarly priced boats and size that actually suited the Ruby Rose budget. It would be comparing apples to apples.

Very well done. I have to ask the question of New vs Used. I bought used catamaran as I love to work on stuff, I regret that decision now (just kidding), and wanted to know the various system in and out prior to shoving off. I will say this I have determined that a used cat of reasonable value you should add the sale price as your refit cost. Mine is a ‘99 Pajot 56’ that needed everything, and I mean everything. I made sure that the hull was solid and it is amazingly solid so I purchased and have spent just over a year, much less time if not for the significant whiskey distractions, refitting this boat. I am launching this winter for the Caribbean and will come back next summer to add a few more needed items for a circumnavigation. By the way this vessel has circumnavigated twice already and she is doing it again with an absolute moron, so I hope she knows what she is doing so I can survive. Love your program wish you would go back to cussing more, screw RU-vid.

Seems like quality shouldn't have been a 10 since you could not view the engine area. Also, since you do look at more costly options will you view a sunreef? And then lastly so far as safety goes could you at some point touch on what type of sailboat is the safest should you encounter a largish rouge wave? (not an extremely huge one don't see anything but a sub helping there)

Everything is a compromise in production boats. Performance, space and price: pick two. The Outremers give good performance and are reasonably priced, but they sacrifice space. The cabins and the saloon are not as big as those on, say, a Lagoon of the same size. But, the Outremer would be sailing at double the speed of the Lagoon. The Outremer has dagger boards which allow you to sail up-wind. The Lagoons, etc, have little fins that give you the upwind performance of a 19th century battleship. In other words, waddle sideways. If you want performance and space, look at a 60' Gunboat. Absolutely brilliant. They were selling second hand a few years ago for around $6 million. You make your choices :-)

Just my opinion about flush hatches is they are probably much harder to make water tight and the seals would need regular maintenance along with they'll allow rogue waves and splashes easier access below. I like this boat because it's one of the rare ones you've shown with a furling main although I realize it may have been put on as an option. Eight year old boats are a much cheaper option only if the previous owner has done some upgrades on all the systems that magically have a life span of around 10 years. I think many are traded just in time to miss some sizable maintenance bills.
@robweiss748
@robweiss748 5 лет назад
TBone MC bam! Exactly. Sails and rigging have a 10 year lifespan. It’s like the 2000 hour overhaul point on airplanes. Part of your operating costs is for doing the big 10 year maintenance items.

Re: comments from RU-vidrs. First, most people are all about the 1% they don't like; put it down to bad parenting and woeful leadership training in schools. You can get 99% perfect and most will still call on a friend's help to invent a complaint. The French never apologize - read that as you might. As to why you'd spend the time building a valuable catalog for others, RU-vid subscriptions help - we get that; it's fine. In the end, the reviews have value to many fellow dreamers (be careful what you wish for) and videos are expensive and time-consuming to make, so soldier on. It looks as though the brand is building; so here's wishing you both continued good fortune.

Now, I understand a little bit of luxury, especially understated, as the Discovery is, makes life so much more pleasant... If it gets you over the Atlantic faster than RubyRose the monohull, then that's a plus... More time to relax and enjoy what you've got... Is a cheque OK... :) It's in the mail...

Nice Review! Discovery makes a great product but is overpriced, in part by labor rates and a poor exchange rate- USD to British Pound. I've been pricing out boats and you can buy an Amel 50 for less than a Southerly 48. South African built Cats are currently a much better value. Balance 482, Knysna 50SE, St. Francis 50 all exceptional boats at a better value. Cheers!

I want to touch on a couple of points made here in this video. 1. Value for Money. My personal opinion here is that this is rather subjective. What one person values may not be what others do. I think we can all agree that things like workmanship, craftsmanship and brilliant design are more expensive, but worth spending the money. We didn't see the engine room, but you did see it on the Privilege, and it was well laid out. If it was well laid out on the Discovery, easy to access everything, systems well designed, easy to work on, etc., that would be a 'value for the money' sort of thing for me. 2.Why are you looking at new boats out of your price range. Excellent answer, and as well, I haven't seen a boat show for used boats! "Come see our five to fifteen-year-old used boats from around the world, in all sorts of conditions!" But, you do have some drawbacks here as well. Design changes, newer boats like the Discovery which have no history, all of this makes it harder to determine a used boat you can afford. Combining the two, I agree with the statement you made about the older used boats. One of the reasons I talk about the used Priviliges so much. They reflect the quality that made them so expensive in the first place, and also are reflected in how they keep their value. Along the way, I'd like to see something for older used cats that reflect percentage of value over the years Also, I asked Keith over on Sailing Zatara about the hull slap, and he didn't actually answer what I was looking for, but their 585 doesn't seem to have too much of a problem, but then again, you have a 12 year old sleeping in that space! LOL Oh yeah, Nick, you complained about headroom in the Privilege 510 master suite, but on the Discovery, Terysa couldn't stand full up getting into the bed in the Master Cabin, either. My thoughts and observations.

As far as the value for money statements. I love your comments, but I do think sometimes the kitting cost differences might be much different than comes through on some of the videos. This discovery fully kitted is 1.4 million dollars, in your comments, however, a fully kitted Lagoon 50 would not be much less and you would not have the quality that Discovery has included, am I wrong?

@@andrewkeir2282 Exactly my thought - a sudden 2000+ pounds near the front in strong weather could be nasty. One hopes it can drain very quickly.

Just an observation about flush hatches. They may look better but are they practical? While living on a boat, wouldn't you have the hatches open most of the time? If that is the case they would be a trip hazard anyway. If they are open and they were flush, the water would run into the opening more on flush hatches than raised ones. I say the raised ones are better for stopping water ingress and most of the time are not a downside.

I think,you missed some important detail: the Discovery 50 cat has in-mast furling - it's quite unusual in case of catamarans,isn't it ?
@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 4 года назад
It is an option as it can be for quite a few luxury catamarans. I know that Xsquisite and Antares also offer it. Not something I would be keen on for the sheer distribution of weight up the mast

@@sailingrubyrose Thank you very much for your answer ! Let's begin at the beginning: I found your channel yesterday and I am fond of it ! Your tests are independent,correct and gave me help to find the best boat for me. Being 63,I have been looking for het best solution for several years. At first I bought a Bavaria 37 because I had had small money....I changed it to a Bavaria 44, later an X-Yacht 50 Performance Cruiser - I found it disappointing so I returned to Bavaria 47 and I sold my latest boat,a Bavaria 37 this year. I visited many boat shows from Budapest,London,Portsmouth to Cannes,visited many factories from Italy ( Grand Soleil ), England ( Oyster,Fairline ) to Denmark ( X-Yacht ) and I always tried to find the balance between speed and comfort,sailing and motorboat,monohull and catamaran,price and value - I haven't managed to do it ! I think,it is very difficult and because of this,your test give me a great help - thanks for it !

@@sailingrubyrose I would feel the same way but I notice Delos has in mast furling and they do seem to get on OK with it. I wonder if pairing it with a carbon mast would offset the weight aloft to a point where it was not such a potential problem?

There are actually quite a number of people that could spend $1.3 million on a cat that aren’t anywhere near as interesting as you two are. I enjoyed your explanation but it almost seemed like you were apologizing for not being super rich when your viewers just don’t care. Another great video. Fair winds.

Great review as always. You were critical of the forward cockpit concept on the leopard for seaworthiness reasons and docked points as a result. No issues raised about the hot tub on the discovery despite it seemingly being even further forward. Why not? What is the difference??

Thanks did enjoy the video and do like to see these great boats but as you touch up on at the end of the video bit out of the price range of most of us, get as they get older they become more affordable. Don't agree with the millionaires checking out youtube reviews, but hey what do i know😟 Will be interested to see your videos when you start to narrow down the cat type you are going to buy👍 still love your boat and if i had the money it would be D.S. In my opinion buying a boat is like buying a house or a high end car your better off to buy one that's a year or two old cause all big ticket items are the same you buy one new and as soon as you move in and take them out the first time their not worth what you paid for them

Just my thinking, the reason many semi-production boats are using “raised” hatches as opposed to flush is that there issues with leaking on the flush mounted as I have experienced on chartered catamarans that were less than 3 years old. In addition, they are difficult to clean the recess on a flush hatch where it must be opened to wipe down. With a raised hatch closed, a quick scrub with the deck brush, rinse and you’re done. As for the trip hazard of a “raised” hatch I guess there is something to that, but I’ve never found it difficult to get around and never heard of anyone trip over one. Still loving your reviews and looking forward to the rest of what you saw at the show!
