The Majestic 530 Catamaran is a bluewater cruiser from one of South Africas boutique builders. It has so, so much room and the boat is almost infinitely customisable. However what do we think of this 53ft behemoth?

Thanks for watching our Search For The Perfect Catamaran Series! The FINAL REVIEW is the St Francis, and it is currently live on Patreon: www.patreon.com/posts/st-francis-50-33577810 Thankyou for all your support and feedback. We know we haven't reviewed absolutely *every* cruising catamaran out there, but we believe we've covered the vast majority of models that are currently available. We can't wait to show you the Top 10 (based on YOUR votes!) and also reveal our decision about which catamaran we are actually going to buy! Cheers, Nick & Terysa

Muchos gracias, as they say in Poland and parts of Coober Pedy. Your catamaran reviews are extremely well done. Over the top. I like the rating system. I like the graphics. I like the music. I like this ship. My concern with many blue water vessels is how much the helmsman (helmsperson) is unprotected. I love the Amel for that reason. On this cat there is some protection provided. I like that. The only concern I had when watching is my ribs protest against square corners on furniture. That's the only issue I saw, but this company, you say, will build to suit. I haven't thanked you for these cat videos, which are more fun to watch than the furry, fluffy kind. So..thank you both.

These reviews are really amazing, excellent. Could not be better. W e are looking to buy and my family loves this boat. I prefer more performance but this is a boat to sit around on since you do that 90% of the time. A tiny little issue on the nav station, to me this is the best I have ever seen. The 90% on the hook, you shut down the station as you do not need it and you have more useable kitchen countertop (though no stand-alone desk) and when you need it, clear the space and get ready to do navigation. It is a little high up, but there are so many good solid heavy chairs that move up and down a significant amount, my 9-year-old son would be able to see out of the window. Once again, brilliant videos, thank you so much for all your hard work. You guys are the best.

With the sail area so high above the waterline, and such a comparibly shallow draft, (even at 50+ feet) this boat could turn into a real hobby-horse!!! To me, one major selling point for a catamaran is the excellent visability from the salon. The lines of sight on this boat rivaled those of a mono-hull! Like so many have mentioned, that helm is absolutly terrifying!!! I'd be wanting to tie in while in the harbour!!! Finally, congratulations, congratulations, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! The two of you are such an awesome couple. We're very happy for you!!!

YES! Thank you; I've been patiently waiting for this review! My wife and I totally agree with you that the Majestic doesn't hit that standard of elegance and sophistication generally associated with cats. We're also bummed about the obvious lack of performance. The thing for us is that we have 5 kids and the space and storage that the Majestic 530 offers can't be matched in other cats this size, so out of necessity it's on top of our wish list. The only other boat that we were considering was the NEEL 51. However, after your review of the NEEL, we removed it from our wish list. Your level of expertise is something we greatly value and appreciate.

Sorry but Yosh and Bonita spoiled your surprise. Congrats! This a terrific value for the money. While Terysa was in the salon/saloon something hit me as to why she may like it so much. It looked like it felt like your current boat. While seated, there was plenty of light but plenty of privacy at the same time. the windows were high enough to give a similar feeling to being in a monohull. Thoughts? I agree with Nick that there is too much boat here. For my cruising plans I have no need or desire to accommodate 8 to 10 people. If I could chop off ten feet and keep some of the features (spacious feel of the cockpit/ salon/ customization of the interior) I might forego the outward appearance and consider this as an option. Nice dress Terysa!

Love your reviews, but I think you need to look at these cats after a few years of use to see how they hold up before you make a decision on value. Doing a walk through of each type of cat after 5 years of cruising would complete the picture and be the ultimate catamaran review series.
@squalloogal
@squalloogal 4 года назад
SV Pacific Dragon the problem with that is different types of use causes different wear and tear. Also different owners doing the same voyage at the same time effects the boat. Maintenance and general living habits can have a huge impact. I think a better judgement would be if certain boats are known for particular faults. That would be more informative.
@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 4 года назад
That would be really fantastic, although, as has been mentioned, a lot of it would come down to the individual owner's attitude to maintenance as well as how heavily the vessel had been used. But point taken!
@sm6wet
@sm6wet 3 года назад
It would be interesting but there is just a lot of variables. But what can you do is to look at depreciation after 5 years. It seems like the Royal Cape boats and St Francis has a lot lower depreciation than the larger production cat manufacturers.

Like others, I noted some stress cracks around the (hatch?) pin at 1:20. I’m sure it would be a warranty issue, but makes one wonder what might happen 1-2 years down the road. Also, I am a little Leary of all the opening hatches. Always worry that they are weak points in a vessel that has so much flex. Especially in some heavy blue water.... Great review as always! (My wife and I spoke with you at Annapolis, just outside the conference room- you were in a rush because the Delos crew had gone a little over their time!)

Great review. Just some comments on your negative thoughts. 1. If your concerned about the height of the helmet position I'm sure they can customize an extra step, a reusable and lowerable chair and even a waist seat belt. They would do that for you. Also I do think your concerns are greatly based on monohull experiance. Cats dont move like monohulls. I doubt you would be able to fly out of your chair. Also, you dont get near as tires from watches on a cat compared to a monohull. 2. Inside nav station. I agree, this one was not optimal for keeping watch inside however I seen other versions with better and bigger inside nav station that would give you good visibility to do your watch from inside. I think it's a really good boat. If I had the money this one or St Francis 50 would be high on my list.

I spent a LOT of time on this boat. We loved it. We were on a lot of boats and this really felt like a world traveling and live aboard catamaran. Currently we live on a classic monohull, well maintained but aging. This aging process has made me really aware of the beauty in simplicity and the beauty of being able to access and work on all parts of any boat. We are a currently traveling family. 1. I love having two heads in a boat or a house for that matter... but 5!! That’s a lot of heads to keep work and clean... 2. The level of grab your beer and crackers and this boat is ready to go can’t be understated. There are generators, refrigerators, storage, storage,and more storage, really, how much can you take before you just feel silly? I believe that boat also hade a dive tank compressor as well. A water maker is also included in this equipment list 3. Solar. Ugly... yes, but there is beauty in functionality and there was enough power on that boat to run everything! And it could be changed at a later date as technology improves. 4. The helm was really high. I think that this could be addressed with just a little more stainless that would help it feel more secure. I did like the protection and connection to the rest of the cockpit. 5. Crawling around inside the engine room and forward storage lockers I was always struck by how well built and laid out to access and fix the many, many systems this boat carries. 6. Easy access to the mast, and boom to be able to inspect, sails, rigging, lighting, etc. when you are really into extended cruising this is what keeps you going. 7. When you have a family, and pets, a safe cockpit is where you spend really the majority of your time. I loved the livability of this cockpit. It was open and airy but also felt protective and secure. This is something I loved about the older leopard catamarans but I feel that the it has disappeared with some of the newer models. The inclusion of the helm keeps the parent standing watch from being separated from the family. The ability to make the layout function exactly the way we would like, and the equipment that it “comes” equipped with really made the case for this cat. It isn’t fast, but coming from a 1975 Wellington 47 that weighs in at 46000lbs... it would be a racehorse. Lastly a lot of the catamarans we were on felt cheaply made once you started opening cabinets and looking behind corners, this just kept impressing. It built a feeling of craftsmanship and trust that I couldn’t shake. I liked that a lot. Much love!! Currently in Key West and Bahamas bound.

Surprisingly these cats don't seem to keep their value very well, a simple example is the boat that you reviewed is currently for sale with an asking price of $999.000 pretty good value for a 2018 built boat but still a $200,000 savings on an amazing cat. there has been an update to the boat you toured. New hull design etc. I've only seen pics on their Facebook page. Personally I would sacrifice a bit of speed making way to destination/s, for the comfort at anchor or moored as I would be spending far more time doing just that.

I am not a sailor yet ... still looking to be one ...but I am struck by the enormous distances involved in passage making, especially across the Pacific. The non-performance cats seem to cruise on average at about 6 knots. This turns a trip to Hawaii or the Marquesas into a 2-3-week slog. On the other hand, a good performance cat, like a Balance 526, could do that in half the time which I would think would be quite desirable. Also, if you happen to be enjoying a particular anchorage and a storm is bearing down on you, I would think there would be a lot of comfort in knowing you have the speed to get out of harm's way. Finally, knowing that systems do break on occasion, a faster boat means you are that much closer to a fix or medical help. I can imagine breaking something important in the middle of the ocean would be very disconcerting. So, I am not so eager to sacrifice performance for comfort.

That my friend is exactly why there are multiple opinions, so we can all have one that suits us best. I've never been in any hurry to arrive at my destination (good passage planning will determine an approximate time of arrival). Those that are in a great hurry are usually the ones that make a living from their video as there is great need to get that new video out and keep the money rolling in. My enjoyment of Sailing is just that, the enjoyment of just sailing. I don't have Destination video's to get out to the public, hence my ability to enjoy the sail. Consequently there are very few actual sailing channels, just the "LOOK AT WHERE WE ARE NOW" channels with very little actual sailing going on (and thanks for paying for us to get there). I wish you great fortune in your Quest to become a sailor, just please remember that there are many different kinds of sailor, each with different requirements.

@@azskorupa1813 if you have the money to actually buy one of these, I recommend you do a charter for several months first, evaluating a type of boat you're considering. I know the charter will be pricey, but it's not much more than the actual operating cost of owning one of these. If you can't afford that, you can't afford owning the boat. You might end up finding out you're staying at anchor for a few days, then sail a day or two (you can make quite a bit of distance with an overnight sail, even on a boat that tops out at 9 knots instead of 25). You're not changing sailing grounds every month, you're probably going to be staying there for half a year. As such, you'll be happier with a slower boat that is much more comfortable at anchor and carries a lot of heavy comfort features, such as a larger hot water tank, a dive compressor, a bunch of freezers, a large pantry, etc. On the other hand, you might find that you really just like to sail and don't want to stay for long in any one place, then you might want to go with a performance boat. My personal requirement is it needs to be able to exceed 8 knots in normal conditions (so you have a chance to get out of the way from a hurricane). It doesn't need to be able to cross the Atlantic in a shade over a week, three weeks is quick enough. Just come over to the Mediterranean for (late) summer here, stay a bit late, then join the ARC to arrive back in the Caribbean some time in December. Crossing the Pacific? Doable, takes a while, but IMHO, that's ok. If stuff breaks, the difference between three days and 7 days isn't that great, IMHO. And some stuff that breaks will make your performance boat turn into a crawl as well...

Interesting solar arrangment. The port side slides to the center exposing two more panels underneath, though why not just install them in the center since the space is obviously there. And all the stress cracks in the fiberglass where the screws go in under the bimini shows that not much care was taken installing them, of that the glass is just too thin, allso a problem since it's new and not 15 years old.

To have a live bate or fresh lobster tank is interesting for those who miss it in other boats. Diferent from Antares, that just looks dated when put side by side with Seawind or Balance, this looks dated AND ugly. That should not be important when making a 100% technical decision, but sure comes to mind when writing a 1.2 million dollar check. Waiting for St Francis review. Congrats for the vd. Tks.

Thanks for the review on this boat. Yes the 2 biggest issues on this boat is aesthetics from the outside not so nice and the helm being so high. Otherwise the inside and everything that one might need comes standard. You didn't mention it but the boat also comes with an air compressor to refill your scuba tanks. It also has a platform that lowers into the water. She is a big bastard so good for a big family or a group of friends/couples who want to travel together but still want some privacy from each other. When I saw this boat in 2017 they claimed they did 12 knots from FL to Annapolis under sail. I was a little skeptical.

Those guard rails and stow away solar 👍🏻 to me, I love the solar concept of more when your at anchor, it’s genius. Plus providing extra shade in the process. I might have to copy that design. Plus add good ventilation for the solar panels as they don’t preform optimal when overheated. Which is why I think the flexible mounted hard on the cockpit cover, is not the smartest move. I have 15 years experience with designing and setting up alternative energy sites in remote locations. That pantry is top notch idea too! This is a brilliant house boat, but might be too much boat for a couple. I would have to get more live aboard friends 🤣🤣🤣.

Seems that the clearance would make passages quite unpleasant. Do these manufacturers share information about how many of their customers are doing blue water cruising? Seems more a boat for coastal and quiet seas. Congrats for your detailed and funny reviews! Hope to see you navigating again soon!

My personal opinion is that a lack of full inside helm limits the cat to warmer climate sailing. And I missed seeing details on where the water for all those "baths" would come from?

The exterior proportions are so frightful that I no longer bother to go on these boats at shows. This one is slightly less horrible than the flybridge model they exhibited last year, but well beyond anything I could own. Touring these boats, I have always though they were missing at least two stripper poles. Best, Maldwin

You two are so funny! The aquarium could be multi-purpose not simply for "Timmy" (? Seriously ?) - You could put those little defoliating fishies in there for the ultimate in luxury, giving back to nature in a sort of strange alien way. Imagine docking in Miami and explaining to people how you have fish that eat your feet aboard, sure to get a free beer for that! You could do science experiments such as the impacts of Rum on lobsters and subsequent consumption etc. Play music to sequestered fish at sea, make for a brave new world!

Those last few minutes are just glorious and have me giggling like a child. But back to the boat. I got vertigo just looking down from the helm. This completely put me off what is really a spectacular boat. Being £600k short is irrelevant. It'd be a great party boat for a group of young couples travelling whereever the winds carried them.

Great review, would this not make a great Caribbean charter yacht for "non" sailors? My wife has never sailed, I have sailed many thousands of miles on You Tube, and if and when we go, this sounds like the perfect "crewed" charter for us. We like space, I would probably not go up to the helm. Island hopping for us.
