DiscoveryOpt sent me this scope to test and review. This is just the start of putting this scope through a rigorist test. Customized 8mm Mauser should work well for tracking and holding zero.

I have had many custom Mauser rifles made on Large Ring 98 actions that started out as 8mm. Most of them have been the VZ 24 intermediate length action a few Turks were thrown in and I have a DWM 7mm that has its original barrel. A good friend of mine had several 8mm he hunted with he even had one rechambered to 8mm-06 it was a real thumper. Those steps in the barrel actually made it stiffer. Years ago there was a gunsmith in the town I lived in that would buy Mauser rifles and take the barrels out and put them in his lathe and machine a taper on them removing the steps. It was time consuming and he learned they would sometimes warp making the barrel useless. It made the rifles look better but not always shoot better. My 7mm Mauser has the original barrel I just cut it back at the first step and recrowned it. Didn't seem to hurt the accuracy it still shoots handloads well enough to hunt. My friend would buy surplus 8mm rounds and pull the metal jacket bullets dump the powder in a pan and replace the bullets with the same weight hunting style and use the same powder charge and primer. He just resized them with a die without a decapper pin installed. If the primers were corrosive he made sure to clean the barrel after shooting some surplus 8mm was non corrosive but Berdan primed he even found Berdan primers and reloaded them. Commercial 8 Mauser ammo was hard to find back then. Thanks for the video.

Congratulations on getting a scope to review. That is so awesome 👌 I need to step up my game plan. 😂 On those scopes I want to know if it is FFP or SFP also if it has a capped windage turret. Or if it is exposed. And the number 1 thing with a exposed turret does it have a zero stop. If it does how easy is it to set. If you remount the scope to a lighter recoiling rifle. try a tract test with it and shoot a square . Like zero the 1 mil up 1 mil right one mil down to zero 1 mil left. Back to initial zero. Love your videos keep them coming
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 4 месяца назад
This PRS scope I previously reviewed maybe better for the type of shooting you do. Answers 1. Yes zero stop. Allen screws inside turret to reset. Yes, First Focal Plane, Xmas tree reticle 2 tenths to 1/2 MIL sustentions. No, windage turret is not capped. But in my case that is not necessary because I set to a very legible zero. Track test needs a fixed position like a lead sled to accurately access. Shooting for 1 mil up, down, left, right and return to zero takes a better shot then me. To be honest, I do not use the turrets, I exclusively use the reticle for hold overs.. studio.ru-vid.comvT0rYCpzOnQ/edit

I would suspect the barrel given it's vintage. However it can't be too bad given the groups. I agree it's the Core-loct ammo. You'll have to invest some significant time and effort in developing a load to see what the possibilities are. Is that worth it is the question. Does somebody love this rifle enough to justify that investment? I would guess the process would be entertaining/informational enough for us in your viewership to warrant the effort.

Dave, I didn't knew anyone could outgrow 30-30 😮 I would also consider running some spired projectiles down there to confirm ammo as the problem. The rifle even after rebuild could have some tolerances slightly off. Looking forward to see if your handloads group better.

Not in my rifle. I experienced several miss-fires . A Full Metal Jacket projectile is not ideal for hunting. Also, the powder they used in this ammo is very corrosive . Thanks for your input.
@zeljkoblazevic2152
@zeljkoblazevic2152 2 месяца назад
The brass looks same as PPU that’s why I said it is, maybe it’s greek surplus or something very old.Almost all are them are corrosive, military rounds where made like that back in the day, and that rifle holds 5 plus one in pipe not 4. FMJ is not good for hunting and you’re right on that, but try them on ballistic gel and you’ll see how destructive they are. I shot elk and pigs with both M76 yugo and Mauser k98/M48A in same calibre (8x57)and they are both joy to shoot, specially on soft targets 😉 All in all nice looking rifle, the scope is high, try different lower mounts so you don’t strain yourself. Happy hunting!

I would recommend 180 grain and more. 197 grain where the most used in Europe after WWII.

I would try some different factory ammo, first. There are a couple of imported brands that are less $teep than big green, which used to be bargain ammo in the day, and you could see if it would like them better.

Due to the insanely downgraded SAAMI spec for.this cartridge in the USA i suspect it is the ammo. I advise trying some euro spec ammo instead or.just hand load to CIP specs.

Just a bit of scope info. If comparing a 30mm tube to a 1" tube the larger diameter tube doesn't increase the amount of light. What a larger tube does allow is a greater amount of adjustment range. The more adjustment range you have means the farther you can dial your turrets before running out of clicks. Thanks for the video.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 4 месяца назад
Thanks for this information and for watching, Aren't the prism lenses inside the tube and ocular lens larger? Larger lenses produce more reflection and or refraction of the light coming from the objective.
