I like the term Boy Scout grade because we destroyed so much "heave duty" gear that claimed to be military grade.

Sorry for such a late reply. I love the term "military grade" because to the average civilian it seems to mean tough and robust but spend time with someone in the military and you will find out it means it was made by the lowest bidder.

My first msw i “slept” in a red $20 walmart sleeping bag with 2 garbage bags for weather proofing. My scrubness was almost god-like.

I got myself a Carinthia Defence 4, I've tested it while sleeping in my car in -10 degrees celcius, it was heaven to say the least. I'm gonna use it outside in the 0-5 degrees celsius in the 28 hour OP in 2 weeks with tarp shelter and sleeping mat.

I think you guys hit it all the high points straight down the middle. I’d agree with a lot of your suggestions for newer players trying to play attend events the require self, in-play sustainment. I may suggest to look in terms of systems and how your items interact. You can save weight and space that way. That and you can substitute equipment and weight for the willingness to be miserable.

Not that I can actually play being blind, but I’d feel uncomfortable explaining that pretty much any weather the lower 48 can throw at me, Alaska has tried and failed to throw much worse. When you guys started talking about sleeping bags that let you sleep down to 0°, I almost choked on my coffee, mine is rated for -40.

Wiggies is the brand we used up there. Double layer bag that zips together, very small form factor when in a stuffed sack. We used the combined two layers for anything around -40, the thicker layer only four -20 to 20, The thin bag for anything above that.

My go to sleeping setup when hiking or motorcycle camping or anything that's not in my Jeep is the modular sleep system patrol bag (green bag), my woobie and a big agnes inflatable sleeping pad. I will substitue the cold weather (black bag) bag for the patrol bag when temps drop. Combining the patrol bag and woobie greatly increases the comfortable sleep temperature of the patrol bag.

In my experience with hiking (including a week long hike on the Appalachian Trail) you don't need a pillow, I just usually use my backpack. Another thing I recommend is bringing a lightweight sleeping bag with a wool blanket. It might be a little extra weight but putting it over your head will keep you very worm just make sure to keep it dry.

Best shelter I have ever used was a tarp from Walmart that was 10'x10' with one side being blue and one side being od green. I am 6'4" and this is the easiest system ever for my size. The actual tarp was folded down into a tiny square that was roughly 1 foot square. Paracord in small amounts and sticks can make amazing shelters, and if given time (and allowed to) I have taken and dug a hole and surounded it with down logs with the tarp as a roof over the whole thing. Doing as described we managed to fit 7 people with 0 movement room and was very warm through 2 hail storms and a downpour.

I do a lot of fall/winter games in Michigan. All I can say is WOOL. Wool greatcoat (knee length), wool pants, wool socks, knee high jack boots, collared shirt, wool blanket folded over the greatcoat, and a sleeping pad. Its amazing at keeping out the elements. Hat wise, I just run a skull cap with a steel helmet or patrol cap. Put whatever modern gear on top of the greatcoat and your good. I just run an RPD with a satchel for ammo in terms of actual webbing, and an OD small alice for a pack with the sleeping pad strapped in the top. If you run a wool kit with cotten underlayers, anything synthetic will just feel awful. in terms of shelter, just a poncho is good enough for me. Im a small guy though at 5'8" xD

wool has great warming properties (we use it for our socks!) but it is very heavy.

On the sleeping equipment, I have a "hybrid" by Moorhead, it is both, like your classic mat, but also self inflating. I have to admit I have never used it around freezing temperatures, but at all other temperatures it kept me warm. Now, after over 10 years, it lost it self inflation function and I have to blow it up, which is a pain in the ass, but I love this map. It is super durable, it keeps you warm and most important, it is super comfortable! Would recommend to try something like this.

This is funny to me.. We don't pack sleeping sysyems beyond a goretex jacket and poncho.. If it's cold at night we just keep going and doing stuff, and sleep when the sun starts rising and temperature gets higher.. But then again we run nighvision aswell... The best way to stay warm at night, just keep on marching and doing stuff 💪🏻

Where do you live? I'm just curious of the normal temperature range for you. I know when I was younger and in boy scouts I slept in just a surplus mummy bag even in below 0 degree situations (I live in Ohio, and my boy scout troop would have the "Winter Aterondak" (Or however the hell you spell it) and I'd be sleeping just in the sleeping bag in a 3 sided building (It had 3 walls and one wall was completely open) with no heat sources inside the building, or in an extremely thin 2 person tent.

Look at the Dutch Army bivi, for about the same money as the snugpak stratosphere you get a decent military surplus.

Me too. My ideal sleeping conditions are about 55-60° with my comforter sleeping shirtless. I run hot and it sucks for camping.

I live in MN, those temp ratings on sleeping bags are absolute horseshit, add about 30 degress to it and thats the lowest temp it works for, any lower and youre going to to be stuffing thermal blankets in it (in a completely dry, closed and well vented tent mind you, not humid let alone soaking wet, or a useless open air tarp)
