The recent release of the classic Doom games has brought together all the best parts of classic Doom... except for one aspect.
In this video I give my thoughts on that and discuss why I feel the forgotten levels should be brought into the fold.

Playstation Doom adding Doom 2 enemies to Doom 1 is enough to warrent playing it, but the colored lighting and Aubrey Hodges' music are what really sells it. It almost feels like a different game.

@@bluebay0 There's a guy who's rebuilding PSX Q2 with the KEX port. I think he's a Nightdive dev. He intends to pitch it to id upon completion, in hopes to getting it patched into the official release. The fact that the only patch for that port was labelled 'Update 1' is kind of hopeful in itself.

Really wish that Nightdive could do the same with PS1 Doom and PS1 Final Doom, but whether licensing issues with ownership of the port has hindered such remaster attempts is up for debate.

@@wadmodderschalton5763 Not sure what the point of remastering Final Doom would be, considering both parts of it are baked into DOOM + DOOM II. I understand that with PSX DOOM, as I feel the same way about PSX Q2

The sequel is actually just dn3d as a rpg in space and the first is a classic doom 3 with a ton of new content And remember that Kronos and Dios sent me

It'd be neat if we could get a re-release of all the console games in one package. I mean, Limited Run is re-releasing the SNES port (yes, I am not kidding) on the actual original console, with improved controls and performance, and even new levels. So they haven't completely forgotten about them. But what about the Jaguar port, or the PS1 levels? Those have their place as well. Even the 3DO port would be welcome, with its surprisingly good OST. So a Doom console game pack would be pretty damn amazing. Not like the file size would be big either. If you can put Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy on a Switch cartridge, you can easily do the same with a couple console games from the 90s. Also, what's the music playing in the background? Sounds beautiful!

@@GermanPeter The SNES port seems to be built on the back of a particular hobbyist dev, which LRG and Bethesda have partnered with. That is to say that these other ports aren't likely to begin so easily.

That Pain Element in 1-1 PS1 Doom was quite a surprise and I would love to see more people experience PS1 Dooms new enemy placement. Part of me hopes for a way to play the very first version of Doom. A lot of small changes that I still mistake for being in Doom now, because I played it on launch back in the day. (Or as close to it as possible with the mail in process) I still remember getting home from school seeing my mom playing Doom, with my dad leaning in over her shoulder. It was level 1-3 Toxic wastes and I noted that the weapons swayed when moving and the green toxic waste in the middle of the first room and how scared I was of the Pinky demons. 😄

Even if fan stuff exists and is really good at doing cool stuff, there are reasons to want the "official" side of things to do something. Don't forget the obscure RPG/mobile games, since id could easily team up with the people who did those reverse engineering fan ports.

they should add the Jaguar levels with the PS1 lighting and the option to toggle the PS1 sound effects on/off to the recent Doom 1 & 2 re-release as a free update or dlc

The Jaguar levels have been the basis for every console port from the 3DO to the GBA the Saturn port is the PSX port with the lighting disabled

As said, some of the levels are worth the experience but you have to play pot luck in the mods section; which isn't ideal

You can get a PSX Doom ISO and play it on the Psydoom source port. It works really well!

Given other recent re-releases of ID classics like the two Quake games both went out of their way to include the Nintendo 64 ports, it frankly does surprlse me that including PSX Doom isn't just a given by this point.

ID Software likes to froget the Jaguar Doom and SNES/Macintosh Wolfenstine 3d port level sets. The Wolfenstine 3d classic IOS port ended up becoming a hybrid using Jaguar artwork for the weapons and wall flats because people complained about the PC ones being used Carmack kept the PC levels and superior actor art.

Apparently they tried pulling these over but they weren't suitable given the modern setup of MP. Fair enough I guess but yeah would have been nice too.

I completely agree. I also think that you should be able to use the custom MIDI packs from the community for Evilution, Plutonia, and No Rest for The Living. Another thing I'd love to see is a special version of Ultimate Doom that is a continuous playthrough and NOT episodic, and this is mainly targeted at the 4th episode. Also, a setting that allows you to change the port of the game without needing to go into the MOD section, and even the Doom 93 release (doesn't include episode 4, and the switch near the regular amor in E1M1 is removed.

Only if the people who made the custom MIDI packs want them there. This port has already allowed way too much plagiarism. Nightdive, id, Bethesda, ZeniMax, and Microsoft all deserve flak for the terrible way they implemented mod submissions. It's utterly disgusting and disrespectful to the community that has kept this game alive for 30 years.

I know there are mods that do it but, why would you want to make Doom 1 non-episodic? All that would really do is give you some extra weapons on map 1. A couple maps into each episode you've got most of the weapons anyways. It also kind of breaks the flow of the game, thats one of the reasons Doom 2 kind of drags in the middle.

It's one of those things where I'm not bothered by its omission given how much content we already have, BUT... The people at Nightdive are such big nerds of these games I can totally see them doing it one of these days. Or at the very least making it some kind of "featured" addon like with Quake. Having their own custom version of the engine with their own new mapping standard makes me wonder if it'd be easier to add all the bells and whistles from the PSX version too.

It feels like the rerelease focuses on packing up all the original PC releases and tying up the mod community stuff up with a neat little bow. From a completionist, or game preservationist perspective, you make some good points about their lack of inclusion. I'm not sure if Nightdive was really going for that, but knowing them, they just add it if you give them a poke. I'm somewhat curious to see Nightdive make a remix of the original two releases.

At some point in development for the re-release Nightdive was testing out a few exclusive deathmatch levels from the GBA port, however they decided to cut shot and not include them in due to them being too claustrophobic thus making a whole set of official deathmatch levels (and possibly a first set of levels that aren't just variations of singleplayer levels repurposed for multiplayer). Then again, if they wanted to preserve as much detail from the console counterparts they would have probably brought back the Doomguy gibbing mugshot animation from the Atari Jaguar and 3DO. Non the less, the 24 levels in the Jaguar port being a one segmented set of maps does remind me of the way it works with Second Encounter in the Wolfenstein 3-D Mac version, which ditches the episodic format in favor of a long stretched combination of all maps in the game with restructured level design.

There are levels that are exclusive *only* to the console ports ("the Mansion", "Club Doom", etc.). Another reason why this video has a good point.

I'd love to see PS1 Doom, PS1 Final Doom, the GBA multiplayer maps, and an option to switch Doom's soundtrack to the 3DO rendition. I mean seriously, they're spending money and time fixing the SNES port of Doom and re-releasing it on a special cart with an FPGA simulating a spec enhanced Super FX chip! They can manage this!

considering the boom compatibility, ontop of the new ID24 tech, it'd be more than possible to do the colormaps that the PS1 version does. i mean, i'm willing to bet there'd be community contributors that'd lend a hand in making a super authentic port of these maps, down to the tee.

The problem with bringing in PSX doom is, with out the fancy lighting, different sounds and music, and a few unique levels, its just worse versions of the levels we've already seen. Its also really a different engine, unlike everything else included in the new Doom re-release. So you either need a brand new engine for PSX doom specifically. or you just port the levels, which are just worse versions of the Doom 1 and Doom 2 that are already provided.

With the keks engine it would be EXTREMELY easy to port over the level. Since Doom PSX uses a lot of Doom 64 content which has already been ported to the keks engine.

If they do this I hope the Jaguar levels will be available in addition to the PSX ones. There is a fair amount of differences between them, e.g. the Jaguar maps have more texture variation as they didn't have the VRAM constraint there.

So because I saw this video randomly before bed last night, I have now downloaded DOOM CE versions of PSX DOOM and PSX FINAL DOOM. I will keep these on my PC for when I next feel like replaying the series.

Ps1 doom was my true introduction to doom I and II. I saw it played on pc before that. But that was like 5m and all i remember is the end screen of a level. But ps1 doom is where i rlly played and remember doom. Now ive played tons of pc doom.

As a guy who played the original PS1 DOOM for over a decade (started at 6 years old, I am 22 years old now, I like it more than the PC counterparts, mostly when I can play PsyDoom with GEC Master Edition for all, or almost all, the non-released official maps on a PS1 hardware) I honestly would feel better if one of the best console ports gets put into the re-release, mostly because DOOM 64 kind of existed by that, atleast the ambience and sounds.

It would be nice if they added them, even as add-ons, as they did with Quake 64 and Quake II 64. Though the PSX Dooms had extra features like colored lighting that the engine doesn't support. It'd be nice if they released a version of that for PC, but until then, mods it is.

PS1 Doom was my first experience with Doom, I never owned a PC until mid 2000. And still to this day the PS1 port remains my preferred way to play, it just feels weird to not have the ambient soundtrack, monster sounds, light effects etc. When I played the original eventually it felt weird to me, especially knowing this was how the game was meant to be.

well sorry for the big text but i can finally understand the point that doom console players make, i've recently acquired a shitty samsung laptop... one that is so shitty that win10 doesn't properly run in it, i was limited to use only linux distros as my os (after extensive testing many of them i've settled for mint) and that presents a problem, when im on my main rig that runs win10 i am a gzdoom player, the sky is the fucking limit, i mix and match PK3 mods and wads with ease, it's just a simple drag 'n drop, however, that is not the case when we speak about GZdoom on linux, i've personally found it way harder to play doom like i wanted on linux, now that this new remastered port is out, i can properly play atleast the wads i want, i still feel it's a pretty limited port when it comes to: options, QOL and some minor details. but the important is... yeah doom for everyone.

It's disappointing to see that they didn't include them at release. When they released the update to Quake, I was excited to try out something akin to what console players had, with coloured lighting, simplified levels, and all.

The mod browser is available on PlayStation and Xbox, so players on there could download the WAD. Switch players would be left out, however.

Honestly yeah I wouldnt mind Jaguar or PS1 Doom as an option in KexDoom since Quake 1 and 2 had the N64 versions of the levels included
