This needs to go viral. More and more games are made for big content creators and profit and not for the average person to have fun playing.

I hope more can recognize the rotting edges of what “Triple A service” games have become. I can enjoy SOME time dedicated to a game like COD, but it’s always left me feeling much worse than before I started playing. That is, the newer editions of the series. Typical of Live-service games to leave me feeling this way, however any and almost all games still have unique or enjoyable features. It’s just a problem when you have to pay additional $$ on top of $70 that the population agrees does not own up to its supposed value, to be able to access it.

Yeah, we all need to find time to step away from any particular habit or addiction that doesn’t advance our goals and our drive. But I wanted to find the space of discussion where we start talking about the REASON we might fall into these things, and how, in this particular space, the audience can talk about where the individual went wrong, where the corporation that produces what we consume went wrong, and where the relationship is generally ineffective. Im not sure I did well at articulating that, but it’s one of the topics that will be somewhat recurring I believe.

Really like the topics you brush in this video, a lot has shifted within years of games as a genre/medium. I've had a massively unhealthy relationship with games for most of my life, and have struggled with addiction stemming from negative influences/situations and have had to really pry myself from digital media. Games have always been a endless source of comfort and stability for me. Every time I'd have a bad day I could hop on Call of Duty, Destiny, Apex Legends, Fortnite or anything really and just simply bury whatever I was feeling under mountains of infinite dopamine rushes. It was so easy to just dissociate from all the bad when I knew my controller or keyboard was just a few steps, never changing, always present. On top of all that, I loved character skins, weapon charms, battle-passes, anything a digital storefront could offer me to stand out and look cool I would break out the wallet for. Bad habit after bad habit piled until I was actually forced to look at what I was doing, and I hated. I loved the feeling, craved it without even contemplating the cost because it was just video games after all right? How much damage could they really do? I lost friends, I sidelined relationships, ignored hands wanting to help, I became an honest-to-god mess, but they were just games right? Of course they were just games, but they took away a valuable currency I couldn't make or take back: Time. All the time I spent playing games, all the hours I spent working for a paycheck to spend on items just so I could feel better while blinding myself from the actual problems I had just ended up feeling like a complete and utter waste. In your video you talk about reflecting on if games are worth putting our time and money into and I think everyone has their own answer to this. I think when played or purchased in moderation and not overextending yourself/your own means, is perfectly acceptable. My problem with this is that the industry as a whole has shifted to a more profit centered system of operation. The top dog triple A developers and publishers are seeing massive payouts year over year when it comes to battlepasses or live service games so naturally this cycle will continue. In my mind I think this is just the new video game company "meta", a sublime repetition of investment to profit margin growth. It's the perfect recipe to extend your playtime while also placing new products in front of you to keep the cash flowing. What really concerns me with today's industry is our younger generation's place in all this. Too young to remember a time without over-monetization they have no bearing on how it used to be so they play in the ecosystem created for them blissfully. I don't think this is bound to change because you don't HAVE to interact with all these new things, but the gnawing reach of any social media surrounding whatever game your playing will always show you brand new shiny items that'll give you the feeling of being different, standing out: Originality. The whole of it is bright lights barred with smoke and mirrors providing a perfect loop of digital consumer marketing and it truly hurts to see that this is what modernized gaming has been grown into. Would consumers benefit from all of these microtransactions and hyper monetization schemes disappearing? I can't honestly answer that because the ever-rising cash ceiling points to this being the gold standard for any franchise that wants to stay a franchise, the status quo. TLDR; Play the games you want to play, buy the items you want to buy, but ask yourself if your investment both in money AND time are the best places for both currencies!

Damn, son. Why don’t you make the video? Haha, you hit the nail on the head though. And this is what I wanted to come out of it- thoughts, questions, reflection and the conversation that comes with. I hope that over time enough individuals can find a reason to uphold many of the current and future indie developers. Not that I want indie to just become a triple a system, but that the creative projects being built have an underlying audience looking for a solid use out of their recreational time, which is already sparse.

@@LifeIsAPlanet Just had to put my two cents out there! I adore the topics and discussions around games, their development, their fruitions, and their downfalls. It's all so very intricate and ham-fisted at the same time with a million different branching fields, I could go on for hours. Thank you for putting videos like this out here, some of the comments I see just skimming through a bunch of your content are sometimes scathing, bordering on rude. Please, never let your mind burn on their useless pyres. I see and hear the bones of a good content creator just from a couple of videos of yours and hope that you continue your strive for excellent content! Cheers!

Games are okay in moderation, but if youre playing games with most of the free time you have, its a sign that something is going wrong in your life. Means you lack purpose and you need to try a lot of different things until you find something that makes you excited to wake up every day. That thing in steam that shows you how much you played in the last 2 weeks, try to keep that under 30 hours. Unless there's a big game that came out recently and is enriching your life, and youre socializing while you do. But most of the time, under 30. If it's above 80, it means you're putting in a full time job's worth of hours into gaming.

Perfect, that’s what we should think about. I play on Xbox primarily so I don’t see numbers, but I do know the time frames each day that I’m typically able to play games. and while today, I maintain a decent relationship and simply enjoy the conversation around it because not only it but other issues are prevalent in my life and prevalent in others, the lines between recreation and waging your fulfillment are somehow actually blurred when it comes to games like COD or Halo (modern ones). Which shouldn’t be okay, because there are millions of people unaware of the tactics used to reel them in, and while the relationship could be healthy, it’s mostly not and we can see this with the reaction people have out of these games, as regardless of the reaction the game is still played and still a recurring triple a making the same decisions. Thanks for commenting! Tongpoo, from the Wisdom Tree.
