I dont think anyone expected Dan to rebuild the chateau without modern equipment. In fact, in the beginning they all called him crazy to not be using modern tools. It will be great to have a well stocked workshop. He will need some security like sturdy doors and locks. Another step in the chateau story.
This could be the first room with glass paned windows since it looks like most of the frames still exist for repair or to create a pattern for a new frames. Security bars are already on the windows and then two locked doors and some basic electrical.
He's found a company that will provide any tools he needs and the advertising will bring in revenue. That's apart from Patreon subscribers. @@grantman1148
I can't help feeling that destiny has brought you and the chateau together and that this is to be your life's work, your 'raison d'etre'. The series of events that occurred in your life to bring you from the UK to this exact part of rural France, working at one chateau and then finding this one, this is what was meant to be. This chateau has been waiting patiently, for decades, for your arrival. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. You lucky man.
I think you punctured a hydraulic line at 8:14 when the block bashed into the arm, by around 8:36 the fluid is really gushing out. Just something to double check in case you didn't notice in the moment during what looked like a really tricky maneuver
Just loved the added applause when you finally succeeded lifting that heavy stone 😂 Dan, you will definitely be the guy with the most beautiful workshop floor in all of France!
The extra applause, those tiles and that wheelbarrow! I am newly binging this...are there more tiles? And what episode is the history of this building in?
OMG!! At 12:05 I was holding my breath wishing Dan would wear steel toed shoes. I think they're available in tennis shoe types now. The applause when the big piece of cement was finally grabbed was right on. I was afraid the tiles were going to be broken.
I've watched construcction work since I was a kid. Seeing the job you're doing has helped me keep at it re-building the ground floor of my house ruined by Hurricane Ian. You are in your late 30's, I'm in my late 70's. Watching your determinnation has helped me keep going. Hurrah!
I know he said those red & white tiles aren't worth saving and I expect he's right. But it's still amazing to see them reappear as the debris get cleared.
Next time you have a heavy stone to put into the trolley, use a board as a ramp to then roll the stone into the bucket. This will save your back so you can finish your mammoth project!
Sean showed this week him moving heavy wood across a plank using small poles to roll on. He’s had to find clever ways to work around hurting his back when he was younger. It flared up and he had to take a couple weeks off last month after lifting too many heavy stones doing his fireplace. (Seans World)
AGREED! I rely heavily on the wooden plank roll it uphill/controlled fall. Have favorite planks for different staircases/weights/wheelbarrow/truck... even put sticky grit paper on some to help keep things put and buy me some breathing time (can always turn them over to no grit side)
I laughed when he brought the little excavator in right after breaking his back on all the stones, I didn't realize he still had it on-site. Would have been so much easier to just put the bucket on the ground, roll the pillar stones into it an then have the machine do the heavy lifting
There needs to be some kind of award for SOLO (for the most part) chateau restoration. Dan proves over and over and over...with creativity and determination and YOUTH...you can accomplish great things!
I dont think I will ever complain about tidying up my kitchen ever again! Great job and hoping your back is ok. Looking forward to next week and what you will all accomplish!
Delighted to hear it Dan...God knows you need time with those wee men of yours ❤ Incase no one has told you lately...your an absolute star ✨️ Have fun...enjoy ❤
We’ve seen Dan do some crazy things, but moving those massive blocks was unbelievable. He’s definitely going to have some sore muscles for a few days. Well done 👍
OMG Dan! 🫣 ONE DAY! 👉🏼 just one day 👈🏼 until you had two helpers to lift that heavy granite 💪🏼💪🏼 and save your one and only body some grief 😫 Lecture over 💁🏼♀️ love Aussie mum ❤️
It's nice to see the floor again. That'll be a nice space for a workshop, you could fit a lathe in there quite nicely. I think you've nicked a hydraulic line on the digger Dan, if you have don't use it you're at risk of a hydraulic injection injury (don't search it if you're squeamish)
Cool to see this one come up, after having binge watched all Dan’s videos these last 4 weeks. This epic channel should have more subscribers than all the Kardashians put together.
I’m sitting here with a heating pad on my back because I just tried mowing my lawn. A damaged back is forever, and you still have way too much to do on that chateau. You have the machines. Use them.
I was watching back your first episode of the château. You really did all that in less than 1.5 years. Great job! Can't wait for the roof being placed and 1 side of de château is leak free.❤
Going to make myself unpopular here. But when working with big granite blocks, safety boots are your friend. In the UK they are VAT exempt so they're cheap. I once dropped an I beam on my foot. I was limping for a fortnight and every other day I had to peel my socks off in warm water because the blood had welded the sock to my foot. Just saying...
I was an aircraft mechanic and everywhere I worked we were required to wear steel toe boots. Drop a 80 lb battery on your foot and you will be glad you had the steel toe boots.
One of the most interesting things of this restoration is the amazing tools available for hire today! In my youth I assisted a friend now passed on to rebuild a medieval frame house and one of the most valuable tools was a carriage jack with which we heaved up whole walls to insert new timbers. We would have loved some of those tools but you take what is available.
Please please watch your back . I’m having to get spinal surgery simply by hurting my spine doing a lot less than you did there and I was fit . Haven’t worked a day since lost everything absolutely everything. God bless Dan 😊 you’re doing an amazing Job and your kids will look back on these videos later in life and realise how hard their dad worked to provide for them 👍🏻
Between your channel, Life of Ryan and our buddy Billy from The Pethericks, we have more fun in the evenings, here in sunny Southern California, watching you build your dreams in France than you can imagine! Fun episode! You’re an ambitious young man! Be safe! Thanks!
I totally admire your determination and work ethics Dan. As always, I'm delighted to see you are still alive and injury free despite your best efforts. Loving your work.
You're determination has inspired my finishing the miniature dollhouse that ive had for too long sitting. As i listen and watch your work in the background, i plan, measure, cut siding to attach to the house, ive cut holes into the already assembled house to add stained "glass" round windows, ive created a powder room underneath the first floors staircase with dliding doors, ive created a modern deco bathroom, applied LED lights throughout the finished rooms. I am now planning on making a porch outside the dining room and kitchen. I have to think how to, whether its possible and of course, how. I am like that after a good might sleep, the answers come to me. You sre an inspiration thank you Dan.
It's worthwhile to have that glimpse down memory but you are right there are no apologies necessary. I've enjoyed watching the progression of tools and equipment you've added to your arsenal to make it possible for you to do 99% of this work yourself.
Oh my goodness, that was like watching an ancient structure being unbuilt! Those stones were massive. I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday and I'll be excited to see Nick and Cameron back. I'm also wondering if that may have been the first time I noticed a broom as opposed to a leaf blower? Anyway, good work and I hope the floors will stay, I love them!
WOW!! Those chunks were crazy big and I bet unbelievably heavy!! Glad you got that done without any injuries. Hug your boys extra big with love from all of us.
8:14 I think you have destroyed your digger. The hydrolic fluid was leaking after this so I am afraid you will have to repair it before you need it again.
What a satisfying day! Nothing like a good tidy up! I kept thinking about all the “take care of your back, you almost smashed your foot, etc.” comments you were going to get - but you still think you’re invincible! 😂 Laughed out loud when the applause came on. Enjoy your boys! Share a pic of them for a quick update? Doesn’t have to be a video.
Great work Dan! You would have had trouble lifting the heaviest of those stones a year ago. Fit as you were, even then. Glad to see you using your knees and your back properly too.
Astonishing to be reminded of how deeply that room was buried such a short time ago. The floor is beautiful. The first wonderful thing that happened for the chateau was you having the vision and courage to take it on. The second was getting Nick involved between his expertise, sheer manpower, and amazing array of equipment.
The stones from the old cooking fire will make great capping stones where they are missing on the roof line. Love the 10 stubborn men vs pyramid reference. Dan, your muscles have grow muscles.
I am so happy you got sponsored for a completely fitted workshop. AWESOME!!! That’s almost as exciting as a roof! Love the applause! I wanted to clap along with the video when you finally got the huge rock up on the scoop. Great progress Dan! But careful Dan, please do not hurt yourself lifting. Nic and Camron will be there tomorrow they can help lift something tomorrow that's too heavy to life today. I do remember the flat on the wheel burro and you shoveling and walking it up the ramp. Now as the Chateau grows and advances, so does the equipment! Great Job Dan! You should be very proud of yourself for what's been completed so far. There is nothing stopping you now Dan! You made such a difference in the Chateau and the people that watch you on here like seeing your progress. I have been with you from day one can't wait to see the finished Chateau! I am Watching from Michigan.
With 416 thousand subscribers, (well done, sir!) It's not just a great gift of the sponsorship, it's damn good business sense for the sponsors! Cheers! 😀
Putting all the windows back in that room might not be a bad shout - they're just casement windows - a doddle to make compared with the mansard roof - and it would make it windproof.
Mysterious “tunnel” holes we’re paths for bell pulls Including the mysterious, vertical “pipes” When the château was originally built, the kitchen was the domain of the servants Keep up the wonderful work!
Nah - not by 1890 when the place was built - it's not some massive pile like Villandry so there probably wouldn''t even be that large a domestic staff - probably a cook, scullery maid, housekeeper and some housemaids. They'd probably have an electric bell system running off copper wires fixed to a battery. The mysterious tunnels are to allow warm air to circulate around the building.
Oh please. I admire this guy for his efforts, but he’s clearly working on a sizeable bankroll, and doesn’t have to work. Most men would follow a similar path given those conditions.
Dear Dan, I sincerely hope that you are not doing any serious or permanent damage to your body/back that will come back to haunt you in your future, please be careful with these heavy jobs, and if necessary wait for reinforcements. Love the channel, and I really admire your determination and perseverance!
Dan my love. Be careful lifting the heavy stones. I’m glad to hear Nic and Camron are coming tomorrow. Good job clearing out the floor for the future workshop. Well love, until tomorrow. Please take care and stay safe. Love ya 🍺🌹🇺🇸🕊❤️🌞👍🙏😇🌈
Im surprised with all the heavy stones in the basement, that the tiles arent all cracked. They still look great ❤ You work so hard, dont you ever have days when you think , " nope, not today" and pull the covers back over your head ? 😅
Amazing work Dan. I’m so pleased you didn’t hurt your back as far as I know. It’s going to be a wonderful work space for you. It was epic watching you move those huge slabs. I do remember when you first started this and I’m very happy you have the tools and machines you have now and I’m looking forward for more tools to come. The chateau has come a long way just because of you Dan. Hope you have a great time with your two beauties. Thank you. May you please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩
You really are an all-round talent - with and without tolls and machines… and nice how the dogs peek through the door now and then, checking if you are still there and ok 🐶
As a stonemason from rural Ontario Canada, (God save us) I really relate to you working alone like this. Specially when you crab about the last heavy stone.
