Episode Notes:
1. All footage captured with a combination of real hardware and the Mega SG.
2. Many of these games are still quite affordable.
3. Disney often helped in the development of these titles, but only actually did a few of them by themselves.
4. Disney and Sega was a magical combination. Capcom did some good stuff themselves, but I always preferred the former.

Of these that I have played, Quackshot remains my favorite by far. Aside from the visual and sound, it has a lot of charm to it expressive characters. The sassy moon on the zip line level, the senorita outside the pyramid, even that bit in the intro of Donald running right into the trap door and falling out of sight as the title screen slides in. Still brings a smile to my face.

Proud to say I own many of the winners on this list. Being licensed games many times these games just don't get re-released. It is because of the gems on this list that lead me to be a retro gamer today. I am still amazed by the quality of Mickey Mania for the Sega CD. For those who don't own a Genesis or Mega Drive, the good news is that Disney released great Aladdin, The Lion King & The Jungle Book on Steam and it is quite an amazing compilation of these games from multiple platforms including Genesis, SNES, Master System, and Game Boy when available. Best of all you don't need some fancy high-end PC to play them although I would recommend some sort of PC gamepad or game controller. Again, very well done SLX. Thank you and keep up the great work!

One thing that I learned about the Genesis/ MD Fantasia is that Walt Disney actually forbid anyone who was in charge of Disney to remake Fantasia. Walter Eisner found out about that and ordered all copies to be pulled off shelves. I think Tom Kalinske may have said that.

@schtive81

I wouldn't be surprised if Walt Disney played Spacewar!, or something like that. Given that Disney was into world fairs. I don't know the details. But Tom kalinske has said in previous interviews that Roy Disney found out that Walt never wanted Fantasia recreated, or remade, so they had to pull Fantasia for the Genesis off store shelves. You can find the audio interview on youtube, somewhere.

Disney was probably the most influential franchise in video games during the 8 and 16 but era. They really new how to maximize the animation and made sure their games passed their own quality. Those games got the Disney and Nintendo seal of quality.
@AFourEyedGeek
@AFourEyedGeek 2 года назад
The most influential I wouldn't agree with as that means they influenced the video game industry more than any other company. They wouldn't have influenced others more than Nintendo with their consoles and their frranchises like Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, and so many more. Seems like everyone wanted a mascot like Sonic from Sega after its success, and so many games companies imitated Street Fightrr 2 from Capcom. Disney made some great games, but with Sega, Virgin and others developing games for them, Disney's influence would be minimal compared to the other big video game companies. Well that is what I think anyway.

2:35 relative to it's release date Fantasia looks incredible. Quackshot also looked great for a late 91' release.

Always felt licensed games were way harder than 1st party games, which was kinda dumb since Disney/Nickelodeon games were aimed at younger kids but were brutally difficult.

I finished Lion King on Sega, and again (with keyboard controls) on PC! Great game, the SNES version is a bit broken. The same goes for Mickey Mania, the Genesis version is great but SNES version has some weird hit detection

Disney games on Genesis are a mixed bag; sometimes you’ll get unforgettable classics like Castle of Illusion, Quackshot, Aladdin, and The Lion King, and other times, you’ll get garbage like Fantasia.

Neat to see a pre shante wayforward game in here. Wonder what else they made during the 16 bit era 🤔

The ones I played when I was little were World of Illusion, Aladdin, Pinocchio and Maui Mallard.

Same sentiment here: before their Sega games I didn't really care for Disney. But playing "Lucky Dime Caper" and "Land of Illusion" on the Master System made me a huge fan. Speaking of, please also make a video of their SMS and GG games, which IMO easily trump the MD games.

That damage sound at 6:12 sounds awfully like the damage sound from Moonwalker. 🤣

Disney and sega, disney and capcom... Man, they really cared about doing at least some decent games back in the day, even with a few bumps on the road and some crappy games.

I was just playing through castle of illusion remake today on my PC.. I wanted to take a moment to heartily recommend it for anyone who loved the original game. It worked immediately on a modern windows 11 setup with 3070.. and it even supports, natively, 16:10 resolutions for those with laptops or monitors that have that aspect ratio. I am playing it at 1440P, 60 FPS. Looks and sounds beautiful and Sega Australia should be commended for their effort. I am using the Steam version. No issues at all! My monitor is 165HZ and caused no conflicts. You can remove the 65 FPS cap that the game runs at by default with a config file edit, but I don't recommend it as it breaks a couple things later in the game, and let's be honest, 60 FPS is perfectly fine and mirrors the original game's 60 FPS (I have set it to a 60 FPS cap in the nvidia control panel rather than the weird default 65 FPS). Have fun!

Tom Kalinske said in the book "Console Wars" that they wanted Disney games on the Genesis because it was around the time of the senate hearing, and he wanted a cast of family friendly characters so they could get a bit less backlash over Mortal Kombat and Night Trap.

Is Maui Mallard that different between the Genesis and SNES? I thought it was just the same game with graphic/audio differences. I definitely want to try Jungle Book now, I never thought to give it a chance before.

The SNES game was expanded (read: padded out) with extra collectibles and longer levels. In my opinion the changes hurt the game’s pacing and tight level designs from the original. The Mega Drive/Genesis version is the one to play.

Interestingly on the atgames legends gamer mini I have, I *have* the SNES maui mallard but it has the name of the megadrive version?! not sure what that's about. but yeah even mentioning the lion king to my wife we were both 'UGH' because of some of the crazy difficult parts! a great list and will definitely have to find a way to try some of these in the future!

You should do a video on Disney and the Game Gear. As you say there are some great exclusives in the 8 bit realm.
