Disney has decided to make every Star Wars character a horrible bigot. How fun!

There is a lot Disney doesn’t understand about Star Wars. Droids are pretty high on that list. What were once lovable machines are now sold to us as living, socializing, love making, beings. Lucasfilm has decided to make Droids the new Star Wars subculture. A subculture you are allowed to sleep-with and kick. Let me explain in great detail, the stupidity.
You can find me on Twitter and Instagram, but only if you are nice!

C3PO was a protocol droid, he was designed for more realistic actions with people. It would make sense for C3PO to have an "emotion chip" that triggers an audio response to environmental stressors or just fills silences with small talk. It would also make sense for a robot to have a kneejerk type reflex to indicate damage or danger, as that's more quickly recognizable as a problem than "sir, I am getting damaged". A flesh brain is more than a computing machine, set and setting affect cognition. Droids don't have this problem, but being programmed to act like they do makes them more personable
@schnek8927
@schnek8927 Год назад
@@felicityggreene7831 I was agreeing with you until the "A flesh brain is more than a computing machine" part. No, a brain is quite literally nothing but a computing machine. It's just wildly more complex and imperfect at the same time. It's origin may be completely different to a machine (evolution VS design), but that doesn't mean that the end result isn't the same. There is nothing inside the human mind that cannot be replicated, even with the imperfections that make us so unique.
@erics2954
@erics2954 Год назад
@@felicityggreene7831 yes, exactly, and for a bunch of droids that perform essentially services for an entire society on plazir-15, it would definitely make sense for them to have programming that makes them non-violent, emotional, and that gives them a real DESIRE to serve humans. And with other things in this video, such as the “belly rubs” or whatever, we’ve seen that people can develop sort of attachments to their personal droids, similar to a pet for us. Such as Anakin with R2, where it reached the point that a bunch of Republic plans/info almost leaked when R2 was captured, because Anakin doesn’t wipe his memory. And how Anakin treats R2 as if he could actually feel, when he can’t (and Mace Windu even finds that weird). So people treating droids as pets, especially in a universe with AI to that level, is not weird at all imo

HK-47 from the Knights of the Old Republic games was a great example of the nature of droids in Star Wars, especially in the second game. Though he acts as if he as some sort of affinity for the main character, he is very open about the fact that he's was programed to be an elite assassin droid and threatens that, despite however long they've worked together, he'll still attempt to kill the main character under certain circumstances. He even has a line where he describes love as "making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope." He's often treated (mostly by himself) as nothing more than a tool to be used to carry out the main character's objectives. And even though the player tends to fall in love with his witty, sarcastic, and incredibly morbid "personality," there's no mistaking the fact that he's is and will always be a machine. Though this was all written back before Disney when Star Wars was actually good.

I thought you were going to bring up his quote about how droids are treated and how it helps him stay under the radar as an assassin. "You see, part of the reason an assassin droid is so effective is because it is a droid. Meatbags tend not to notice us. We are treated as furnishings. Droids tend to blend into the background, like a bench or a card table. Mockery: 'Droid, fetch this. Droid, translate that. Droid, clean out the trash compactor.' Part of the love of my function comes when the ‘furnishings’ pull out tibanna-powered rifles and point them at the owners' heads."

Actually it was Lucas who started making droids more human-like, in early seasons of clone wars cartoon he made many battle droids make jokes. Which was often completely tone deaf, with droids making jokes while making clones vent out into space and die. Obviously it was a thing in the book as well, droids who don't have their cache cleared often were developing personalities, r2d2 was a prime example of that. Granted, disney went way further with the topic, but it was nice to see the subject being slightly explored in mandalorian. It wasn't a good episode but , sadly, probably the best in the season all things considered.
@Verebazs
@Verebazs Год назад
Okay, first of all, George made the droids human-like starting from ANH. That's kind of the point of droids. That they're human- *like* . Machine imitating human behavior. As for TCW's battle droid humour, that was actually Matthew Wood, their voice actor, and the shows supervising sound editor ad-libbing a lot of it, since they didn't have mouths to animate, so he could mess around with the sound without altering the animation. Lucas just okayed it, whereever he found it funny. Also, the batlle droid humour didn't even start with TCW. It was present in all the prequels. It was just less noticeable, because the on the one hand, the battle droids had considerable less screentime in the films for obvious reasons, and on the otherhand they were small moments in 2 hour long movies that came-out 3-years apart, not several seconds long gags in weekly twenty minutes long cartoon episodes.
@erics2954
@erics2954 Год назад
@@Verebazs i mean, the battle droids arent even the only thing about the personality of droids before disney owned star wars. Anakin would refuse to wipe R2’s memory, to the point where it almost gave the separatists valuable info. Anakin also treated R2 as if he could actually “feel,” by replying to R2 with “I have a bad feeling about this too, buddy.” (Which Mace Windu thought was weird). I don’t think it is unreasonable to assume that in a galaxy with such advanced AI, some people would treat their droids like pets, while some others would find it to be strange. Sort of like how nowadays, some people treat their pets like children, and some people find it weird. Like, obviously, Owen Lars (a farmer) and Han Solo (a smuggler who only cares about money) wouldn’t care much for droids, while someone as emotional as Anakin who served alongside R2 for all the Clone Wars (and knew since he was a child), or someone like Poe (as much as I despise the sequels) with BB-8 would treat their droids like friends. And especially considering the level of AI in the SWU, it isn’t shocking for a society that completely relies on droids for jobs, ESPECIALLY service-type jobs, to program them with a desire to serve humans.
@Jiub_SN

Filoni is responsible for the comedification of the battle droids, though George did include small jokes involving them since episode 1, and droids were used for comedy since the first film. People blame George for the issues of TCW and I don't really get it, yeah that show was hot garbage and trashes on canon, but just because it was under George doesn't mean he made it. George effectively only said yes or no to things with little direct involvement, the only criticism with him and that show I have is that he didn't say no enough

The analogue of droids and minorities is exactly the point in Lucas, especially in IV. “We don’t serve their kind”. You are right, Disney doesn’t get it, but not in the way you think. One difference is that Lucas understands fiction and metaphor, and he isn’t “pushing” anything, so he can use them to make us look at ourselves and society, and also use them as comic relief. They’re literally droids, not what they represent in any given situation. However, R2 and Threepio can only perform their if we identify with them as persons - that’s what Disney gets wrong. In many ways they’re exactly like children.

I gotta say, when it comes to the Andor prisoner thing: If your going to keep prisoner why not make use of them? You assume there's some sort of cohesion between the Empire justice system and whatever department handles the designs and doctrines of their prisons, but in an entity so large there probably isn't. The prison side just knows they're being sent people, and so they make use of them. The Justice System probably has some sentence quota stemming from the new law being past, and that's why andor is sentenced so flippantly.

I liked that only Luke was kind to the droids, which seemed like an odd behaviour for other characters. It made him stand out in a good way. Luke also had his trusted droid R2D2 travel with him in his journey. It helped that R2D2's "character" was fun and quirky. Disney Star Wars now assigns every character its droid friend. It's annoying and lacks any imagination whatsoever. It also kills Luke's uniqueness. It could be said that this is Disney/Lucasfilms intention all along.

Yeah, Luke Skywalker always treated the droids kindly, even when C3PO called him master he just said "call me Luke", he worked with the droids even as a young farm boy but unlike his uncle Owen, he actually seemed to care for them, Luke care for the droids is seen many times over the original trilogy, when they escape from Jabba's sail barge wreckage he says to Lando "don't forget the droids" and so on. R2 and Luke immediately grew close....also Leia grew concerned when 3PO went missing in Cloud city...it runs in the family I guess :). Luke Skywalker was always my favorite character, it's sad to see him disrespected so in the Disney sequels! Well the Clone Wars also sees Anakin becoming very attached to R2 but the droids are also in that time the feared enemy, as soldiers of the separatists, so the anti-droid sentiments may have also been ignited with fear of the old battle droids at large in the galaxy.

The problem is that in the public consciousness everything mushes together, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Star Trek. For the writers, a robot in Star Wars is the same as a robot in any other scifi story they ever read or watched. That's the whole point of the Jedi order, to pass down knowledge and teachings but now the girl boss just automatically has these powers. I mean, I always took it as read that a GFFA having a culture that treated droids as disposable and less-than-human was meant to show how that culture blinded even the main characters to how they were treating sentient beings. Luke and later Anakin are some of the very few people who even bothered to create relationships with droids. Meanwhile, R2D2 and C-3PO were clearly sentient, capable of making their own decisions, and capable of displaying bravery in the face of danger. They are not “a toaster” or “Alexa” or “Siri”, they are fully formed sentient beings, and you even described R2D2 and C-3PO as such, _so I know you know this,_ despite your attempt to dehumanize them. It wasn’t a *good* thing that even likable characters like Obi-Wan and Han treated droids poorly. But these characters were also a product of their environment. Considering that Lucas did *the exact same thing* with the clones in the prequels and The Clone Wars to make *the exact same point* kind of backs me up here. Of course, Lucasfilm can’t manage to not hamfist any idea that enters their brain, so instead of it being subtle background commentary it’s now activism. Doesn’t change Lucas’ original point. Remember, Germany was one of the *least* anti-Semitic nations in Europe in 1920. Just a few years of Nazi rhetoric was enough to push totally normal people from not giving a crap about Jews to Krystallnacht to the Holocaust. The road to committing unimaginable horrors is much shorter than we think.

Lucas’s work is probably most nuanced and interesting in this area. A lot of his storytelling can be less than subtle, but the treatment and social class of droids was really well executed in both the OT and the prequels.

I just canceled my Disney Plus subscription and it feels great! It's not even about the money... I just can't continue to collude with and enable horrible behavior.

For me I think celebrities In TV shows are fine as long as the show can make them fit into the series like what they did with bill burr earlier and give them depth and understanding to who his character is But when they throw lizzo or jack black in for 1 episode just for fun cause they’re celebrities who everyone knows, it makes it feel like an SNL skit rather than an episode of the show

At this point Disney is one cigar shy of having the Star Wars droids fully transition into the Futurama universe.

Only "true fans" are still watching this show. Wait... that's not the right word. What was I thinking of... oh right. "Idiots."

Andor is still good. Plenty of bullshit reasons why we could have seen prison labor.

Why would the droids have a bar hangout? At best, they'd have a maintainence bay hangout.

The OT and the Prequels showed us real human relationships. A master and his aprentice, a hero and his fateful destiny (of self-sacrifice, something Disney wouldn't possibly understand), a tragedic and irresponsible love and ultimately the fassade of egotism. Disney is trying to reinvent human relationships on an egotistic basis. It feels like there are walls between the characters that inhibit them from understanding each other. Not to mention their agendas for every single minority that has, does or will exist, in reality or in fiction. And the worst part is, of course: people buy it.
