First Nickelodeon parts from Netflix, thus taking away some of my favorite shows from my childhood (those being Blue's Clues, Ren and Stimpy, Aaahh Real Monsters, etc) and now (The Loud House). And now Disney is leaving too?!?!? I can imagine two things. One: Nickelodeon coming back to Netflix in Disney's place. Or Two: Netflix just surviving on old shows from way back when, PBS (maybe), DreamWorks, and their own stuff. If the second thing happens, Netflix may go under.
Personally I think Netflix is just too big to go under. It has the brand name recognition, it has thousands of movies and TV shows and it's already in millions of homes, which is of course an advantage. Losing Disney is certainly a major blow, especially with them now moving into their own streaming network, but not an insurmountable one in my opinion. If nothing else, especially with the shift towards streaming media as opposed to cable, Netflix would be best served to situate themselves as the premiere movie destination for consumers (and maybe shell out some crazy money to keep Marvel/Star Wars nonexclusive)
Joe The Disney Guy Perhaps. But in terms of the animated Disney films and TV shows, like Special Agent Oso, Sophia the First, Zootopia, Fantasia, Moana, etc., Nickelodeon could easily swoop in and nab the spot left by Disney in that department.
Oh I agree wholeheartedly, if Netflix was smart, Nickelodeon would be the first call they make. There's a pretty big void in the children's entertainment department waiting to be filled
Joe The Disney Guy After all, if Mickey Mouse and the others are leaving town, SpongeBob SquarePants and his crew (Ren and Stimpy, Doug, Hey Arnold, etc) would be more than happy to fill in that spot.
Cartoon Network's also taken all of their original programming off of Netflix. Sure, all of the Warner Brothers shows that have been put on there are still there, but all of the Cartoon Cartoons and other programming developed by Cartoon Network Studios are gone.
Congradulations on your new job, Joe! IMO, this is just Disney just being greedy by wanting to make their own streaming service; would it affect Netflix, absolutely but would it shut them down, I don't think so :P
Greed always plays a role in business decisions to some extent, but I do think that the concept of streaming television is where consumers are heading, so this may just be to stay ahead of the curve. The ESPN decision is fascinating to me, as they're sort of adding a paywall to something that cable subscribers were already receiving And I agree, it'll be a hit to Netflix, but they're not shutting down anytime in the near future
Remember disney has parks, toys and games. They have leverage their parks and everyone in the parks download the streaming service for a month for free...you see where I am going with this..they will have the best contents with marvel, pixel, Star Wars, I think they are going to be fine and eventually everyone will be back on cable
First off, Congratulations on your new job! Second...the problem that no one is talking about is this is a win for pirating. People want convenience and splitting their entertainment into another service. Company's are trying to do a cable set up where it's directly hitting their pockets. You can see it with HBO and GOT. They have their own streaming service (and one you can get through Hulu) but it's the biggest pirated show. I think Disney is gonna shoot themselves in the foot. We shall see though.
Thank you! And yes, pirating is always an issue. With GOT specifically, I think it's primarily a popularity/spoiler heavy show sort of deal, but Disney has also dealt with piracy fairly recently with, ironically, their latest Pirates of the Caribbean film. Again, I think Disney is banking on people moving away from cable providers and towards a la carte streaming services, but it can certainly be a concern for someone who is still paying for cable now having to pay multiple sources for streaming channels
Congratulations on the new job! I'm so happy for you! Keep up the good work! I'm somewhat bummed about the news because we have Netflix. But I do hope Disney's steaming service streams old Disney classics movies and cartoon shows.
Thanks! That's the thing I'm most excited for, is the prospect of a lot of older or hard to find shorts and movies making their way to a digital medium
I am concerned that this will eventually replace their home video releases, though it probably won't happen. But the thing is I already have Netflix, HBO Now, and Funimation Now. Not sure if I'm willing to add another streaming service. And also, with everybody making a streaming service, it feels like it's only a matter of time before the bubble pops.
That's gonna be the debate, is this a bubble on streaming services or is this what the future of television looks like? I think Disney is banking on the latter, that more and more people will drop cable in favor of a few streaming services to solely get the content they want. I'm also curious to see if there will be some form of package deal/pricing for getting both the Disney and ESPN streaming services
Joe The Disney Guy I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it goes in the future. Another concern I just thought of is what's gonna happen to the Marvel Netflix shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones? Are they gonna stay on Netflix or move to the new service? If it's the latter, they'll probably have to implement some hardcore parental guidance features.
Congrats on your new job! I'm thrilled your life is going in a better direction. :) I hope for the best for you and your videos make me happy. I cant wait for the next review and i think the streaming idea is good for me since i dont have netflix. I'd be more likely to look into this lol.
I agree; I can see Netflixs taking a hit for loosing Disney, but not a huge one. If anything, I can see other companies like Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, etc filling the spot. Hell, Dreamworks already has a contract with Netflixs since they are making the Voltron reboot and Trollhunters, which are both extremely popular, especially the former, exclusively for the service (by the way, just go watch these series, they are both very good). I'm a bit disappointed they aren't sticking to Netflixs, but I'll get this new service once it comes out.
Yeah, seeing as I already have Netflix, it is kind of a bummer that I'll have to get another streaming service in order to watch the Disney shows and movies I like, but it's not going to stop me from getting it haha
If I get a consistent job, and any of the original content is good, I'll probably subscribe to the streaming service for at least 1 month. But I'll put most of my efforts into Disney Blu Ray's. Glad to see you got a new job. Is the new job any good? Pay better? Hours still the same?
Disney managing the streaming media versus physical media will definitely be an interesting thing to watch that I hadn't really considered before. For decades now Disney has relied on their "vault" model, but if they make tons of stuff available to stream, which I suppose they would, then what's the point of the vault? And I'm enjoying the new job so far. Similar pay (slightly more) and similar hours (as of now slightly less, we'll see how that goes) which is the right direction for both of those haha
I don't believe that's been spelled out yet either, but seeing as ABC is owned by Disney, I think there's a good chance that those shows will be moving off of Netflix as well
Congratulations on your new job! I can't believe Disney is going to pull a stunt like that this shows that they're selfish mules! I have a good question. Sorry if it sounds off topic of the current situation, but do you read fanfiction with original characters? Once again I apologize for this question.
