yes, and the horror parody movie Winnie the Pooh: blood and honey is doing just that as a non-disney film. The reason is because the public domain details are also public domain, which includes the fact that in the original books, Winnie the Pooh wears the red shirt in autumn and winter.

@@betrayal6231 why can't they extend it
@betrayal6231
@betrayal6231 2 года назад
@@Mirsab As an article published in the Western New England Law Review notes, way back when Mickey was created, the copyright law allowed a maximum of 56 years of protection. When Mickey got close to falling into the public domain, Disney started lobbying to make some changes. That lobbying paid off and the Copyright Act of 1976 was ultimately signed by Congress. Under this Act, copyright protection for already-published corporate copyrights (like Mickey Mouse) was extended to to 75 years. Works published after 1922 were entitled to a full 75 years of protection. That extended Mickey’s copyright through to 2003. As 2003 got closer, Disney started lobbying Congress once again. That’s when we got the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998, which many refer to as the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act.” Under this act, corporate copyright protection was extended from 75 years to 95 years. So basically every time Disney gets close to having Mickey fall under public domain, they lobby to extend protections over their copyright. And they’ve been successful…so far! Under the current law, Mickey Mouse is set to enter the public domain in 2024. Well, some of Mickey Mouse’s copyrights anyway. It was a lot easier to block copyright expiration 20 years ago. Now, with the spread of information on the internet, it’s a lot more difficult for lobbyists to go against these public domain protections. According to Ars Technica, “three of the nation’s most powerful rightsholder groups in the country, the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, and the Authors Guild, were not even going to try to pass legislation extending copyrights.”
@silverdamascus2023
@silverdamascus2023 2 года назад
@@Mirsab It's a law, you can't extend. Disney managed to change copyright laws twice to keep Mickey Mouse for longer, but they won't try it a third time. Copyright is a protection on things you create like books, songs, movies and videogames, so other people need your permission to use it, so you can get your money, but after a long time, usually after you die, copyright expires and your creation becomes public domain, allowing anyone to use it for free. When the copyright to Mickey Mouse was going to expire, Disney changed copyright laws to extend the deadline, and then did that again, it seems like this law is unfair and Disney did nothing wrong, but the Disney empire was built on public domain stories and characters like Snow White, Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid.

In USA, copyright ends 70 years after the creator died, or 95 years after release if the owner is a company. Mickey Mouse is going to complete 95 years in 2023, so 2024 is the the year the mouse is ours. And this isn't a problem, if you think this is unfair, remember that Disney built their empire with public domain fairy tales like Snow White, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid, but still lobbied congress to extend copyright twice, and now can't do it a third time.

@@silverdamascus2023 Yes it is. hUNDREDS of people trying to cash in on the name will dilute the brand and make it worthless. They added their own spin to it. You can use public domain stories to make your own. Is cinderella still popular or is everyone tired of her.

@@Ch50304 Sure, public domain causes an overuse, making people sick of stories and characters, but copyright causes underuse, many stories and characters that companies own, are not used for anything, stuck in a vault. Marvel has literally thousands of characters that they don't use for anything and sometimes get lucky to appear in a new comic or even a new movie, but most of them will never make an official appearance again, but copyright keeps getting used to protect the characters that do make them money. And no, there are stories and characters that did become more profitable after joining the public domain, it's just that this wealth is available for everyone, the solution is copyright to your own specific version.

@@silverdamascus2023 If the characters were good, then they would be used. there is nothing stopping someone from creating a similar character and making their own story. i don't think so, if wealth is available for everyone, why bother with making it special. And what about smaller artists who write webtoons and comics, their IP becomes basically worthless if in a couple of years, huge companies can just take their stuff without paying them royalties or anything.
