In 2019 Disney finalised the purchase of their second private island in the Bahamas, Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera. Disney's plans for the island will see up to $400 Million worth of development inspired by the natural environment and celebrate the spirit and culture of the Bahamas.

I design children's museum exhibits. When I saw the queue for Expedition Everest that Joe oversaw, I could tell he'd actually gone to Nepal. It is amazing, and museum quality. I have a feeling he will capture the essence of the Bahamas.

Just looking at castaway cay when you go there the island is beautiful and the nature there is not vastly affected. I’m sure Disney will do a great job and I can’t wait to go to lighthouse point

A project of this magnitude is needed for the Bahamian economy. And who best but Disney with Joe Rody(sp) as project manager who has proven to have the highest respect for the and culture. The specs look amazing.

And before Castaway Cay, Disney technically had another private island called Treasure Cay (technically because it was because of a partnership with Premier Cruise Line as the official cruise line of WDW). They licensed their characters to them. They also provided seven-night land and sea vacations on the Big Red Boat (similar to what Disney does today). At night, the ship crew would be kidnapped by pirates (Captain Hook) and sent to the island. It was up to the guests to save the day. In the end, they had a beach party and marshmallow roast. The relationship ended in 1993 and Disney started its own cruise line in 1995. It's cool that Joe Rohde is working on this project

Yes I loved that premier did cruises where you could just stay on their island or choose to take a boat to a near by port of call. The food was fancier than a lot of modern ships too. I think I was super spoiled by having that as my first cruise experience.

I think it’s wonderful I have to say Disney has respected the environment around them and doing what they can to keep it as clean as possible.

By the looks of it from the concept art, Disney is only going to put buildings at certain points of the island, much like they did on Castaway Cay. This means even if the building do drastically affect the biodiversity of the island, it will only be in localised regions. Much of castaway cay is not even accessible to passengers so I imagine they will make it like this on Lighthouse Point as well. I trust Disney with this one.

33% of Disney World land is untouched or used for renewable energy sources for parks and surrounding area. Castaway Cay is only using about 10% of island and preserving rest for last 23 years. So Disney isn't wreckless when it comes to these things.

The first cruise line private island was Great Stirrup Cay purchased by Norwegian Cruise line in 1977.

From the concept art, beautiful Caribbean/Polynesian buildings and bungalows, low impact infrastructure and a dock to eliminate a trench for the ships ALL under Joe Rhode's imagineering is much better then any other plan for that land and will probably make an amazing destination. I only hope that part of the project includes a connection to S.E.A. as well.

Disney wasn't the first cruise line to have a private island. Premier Cruise Lines had a private island, Salt Cay, long before DCL ever even existed.

Man this new island and the new ships in the fleet couldn't have come at a worst time. In service sooner and they'd have made some money off the pre-pandemic tourism, come out later they'd lose less money from operational losses from the tourism downturn that's expected in the years to come.
@ZontarDow
@ZontarDow 4 года назад
@tomyourmom Q2 is projected to have -14% growth in the single worst quarter since the second world war, the tourism industry is going to get hit harder then it did in the wake of the Great Recession even if the virus fears stopped by May.
@EmeraldTalks
@EmeraldTalks 4 года назад
@Zontar the first of the new ships aren’t coming until next year. I don’t think the virus is going to have too big of an impact on tourism after the end of 2020. I could be wrong though
@ZontarDow
@ZontarDow 4 года назад
@tomyourmom Yes about 5 years after the Great Recession tourism was larger then ever, the problem is this island and those ships are entering service years before we'll be returning to 2019 levels of tourism, which will only be something we even begin to move towards when this crisis is over, and that assumes someone fills the void China's economic downturn and stagnation will leave behind.
@gailhandschuh1138

The new ships have been in planning for years and the island has been on the planner for a few years that I am aware of. With2-3 years till the ships set sail , I really don’t think Disney will have trouble filling them. No matter which ship we sail on , the cabin fee is the same per night the only difference in cost are the port fees. Castaway Cay is very eco-friendly. I don’t expect that Disney is going to change their stripes at this point. Castaway was built with locals and is mostly staffed by locals.

@NeoDerGrose

Disney isn't exactly known for lots of well paid jobs, and even less so is the cruise industry. Disney vacations are expensive, but guests expect to get pampered by lots of staff for their money. If Disney would pay all of them well, especially factoring in the living conditions on an cruise ship for the crew, most guests couldn't afford that kind of treatment anymore.

Disney destroy the coral? They are purpose using a jetty out beyond the coral reef to dock to stop so much damage. I’d be worried if Disney were making a honking great dock close to the island the huge pier they have designed to dock the ship will be much better for the environment. Some people are never happy. They just don’t want anything to be on the island. Disney will do a good job at preserving as much as possible and they will be bringing jobs to the island.

As a property owner on Eleuthera I most certainly don't want Disney coming to Eleuthera and ruining the absolutely best and most beautiful area of the island to make a cheap circus out of it. I bought property on Eleuthera to escape Disney and all that's associated with it from Florida. There are 700 islands in the Bahamas, surely they could go find another one that is uninhabited to destroy.

I’ll be surprised if this goes forward, given the current downward spiral the hospitality industry is going through. Sounds like the environmental assessment is a good a justification to cancel this project for Disney, and not blame it on the way coronavirus upended their business. Instead of “oh, we can’t afford it now”, it’ll become “well, we’re very responsible and this would impact the little fishies too much.”

A project of this scale, solely made for dumping thousands of cruise passengers on an island for a quick day of fun, can never respect culture and nature. Nature will suffer under the large facilities, the amounts of waste and the ships itself. Culture on the other hand will be reduced to the show aspect. You won't go there to experience real cultural events or real cultural live, all you get is fake. Shure, this is Disney, so it will probably be high quality, but still Disney isn't known for real experiences, but high quality fake ones.
