@@Transparencyboo If you don't mind me saying this, with the rise in anger against the Live-Action Remake of the Little Mermaid, I'd argue that the Disney-Animated Little Mermaid isn't that special when compared to the original fairy tale it was loosely based on; and if anything, it has as much problems as the Live-Action Remake outside of Race Swapping. In the original fairy tale, the mermaid, I'll call her "Marina" (after the titular character from the 1975 Toei animated adaptation) was allowed to go to the Surface World when she turns 15. Like Ariel, she saved a Prince from drowning, but unlike Ariel, Marina made sure he's okay before a group of humans go to the beach, and she left before he even wakes up, and the Prince comes to a conclusion that this Raven Haired Girl is his savior. However, unlike Ariel, who has an unreal time limit of three days to win the Eric's heart and kiss him, Marina was given as much time as she needs to win the Prince's heart, just as long as he doesn't marry someone else. Unfortunately, the Prince sees Marina less of a lover, and more of, for lack of better words, a "dumb child". The Prince already had his heart on the Raven-Haired Girl (which Disney vilified as Ursula's disguise, BTW), and when finding out the truth, Marina was heart broken, and waited for her impending doom until sunrise, where her body would decay and become sea foam (rather than Ariel reverting back to a Mermaid by sunset). Marina's sisters cut their hair and trade it for a magic knife, after hearing their sister traded her tongue for a potion to gain legs (which, BTW, is more efficient and less problematic than turning human immediately, while in the middle of the ocean and about to drown). They told Marina that once she plunges the knife into the Prince's heart, his blood will be spilled and she must have the blood fall to her feet, so her legs will revert back to a fish tail and join her sisters back to the Sea. However, when she's about to do such a dark deed, she refrained from doing so, because anything that made the Prince happy made her happy; so she tossed the Magic Knife overboard, and herself after it! You would think this is how the story would end (well, originally, it did), but Hans Christian Andersen threw in a Deus Ex Machina Curveball. You see, Merpeople have longer lifespans (can live up to 300 years), but they have no souls and will turn to seafoam when their lifespans are over; however, humans have shorter lifespans, but their souls live on after their life on earth. If Marina were to end up marrying her Prince, he'd give part of his soul to her, while he still retains his; in other words, Marina isn't just planning to marry the prince for love, but also to gain immortality. What was the curveball? Marina's selfless act made her into a Skymaid. The other Skymaids said Marina has earned this, because she epitomizes good behavior. They also said, that they seek good deeds from children, so that their waiting period would be shortened to make it into Heaven, which makes Marina so happy about it; and she's been living in the sky since. If this storyline sounded familiar, that's because it is. Remember what movie Disney's the Little Mermaid was going against? It was Don Bluth's All Dogs go to Heaven; which, if you ask me, shares a similar storyline as Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid story, in terms of themes of immortality and heaven. In All Dogs go to Heaven, a Dog named Charlie B. Barkin, living in 1939 New Orleans, was intoxicated during Mardi Gras, and assassinated by Carface (with a runaway car, thematically), leaving Charlie's body drowning in the middle of a pool of water. He confronts a Female Whippet Angel who tells him he's in Heaven, because his life on Earth is over, as showcased by a magic watch, that symbolizes his life, that stopped. Charlie, upset that Carface was responsible for Charlie's death, stole the watch, winds it up to work again, and regained his life on earth, coming out of the water in the process; but because of this selfish act in needing revenge, he can no longer return to Heaven. Charlie (and his friend Itchy) befriends a girl named Anne Marie, who was a Prisoner of Carface as a means of using her power of deduction to predict winning race animals. Charlie too used Anne Marie as a means of making big bucks, since Charlie was betrayed by Carface (twice, since the first time was by having Charlie locked up in prison), but he does what he can to make her happy, as Carface never let her have any sense of freedom. One day, they went to the Kentucky Derby to bet on the Grand Chawhee, as it is his birthday; which he won, because the other Horses decided it's best to let the Birthday boy win. As the three lead characters (Charlie, Itchy, and Anne Marie), were betting on winning animals, Charlie had enough money to open a new dog casino; however, this caught the attention of Carface, who found out previously that Anne Marie escaped. While Charlie and Anne Marie went to visit a family of Poor Puppies, and their mother Flo, with a Box of Pizza. Amidst the lesson in sharing, Anne Marie found out Charlie stole a wallet from a loving husband and wife, the same pair that Anne Marie confronted back at the Kentucky Derby when the two dogs attempt to get money to bet with. Anne Marie ran away to live with the Husband and Wife, while Charlie had a nightmare about living in Hell. The following day, Charlie met Anne Marie again, and guilt trips her into joining him again. They confront Carface, who with his weak lackey (ironically named Killer), shot Charlie with a gun, but Charlie didn't have a scratch on him, because his watch kept him alive. After they escaped Carface's wrath, they end up being captured by a tribe of Vodun Rats, lead by a big-lipped Alligator King. King Gator was about to chew up Charlie, but while Charlie fears for his death, he let out a musical howl, that caught the attention of King Gator, that not only did he break into song, but his vibrations from his tail whack caused Anne Marie to fall into the dirty water and catch pneumonia; so while King Gator is still in the middle of his singing, Charlie picks her up and decided to go to an abandoned Church so she'll recover. Itchy, who was attacked by Carface, shows up telling Charlie that Anne Marie has made him soft, and cared less about Itchy; in exasperation, Charlie loudly proclaims he was using her; which broke her heart when she saw him say that, and she ranaway, but is then captured by Carface. The final confrontation took place in Carface's Casino, where everything starts to get intense. They inadvertedly set the place on fire, King Gator literally crashes the place, Carface gets eaten by King Gator, and Charlie lost his watch in the water while trying to save Anne Marie; he died while swimming down to retrieve the watch, as the gears stopped working when the watch filled up with water. Anne Marie got adopted, so did Itchy, and while Charlie was saying his good byes to Anne Marie, he was told he can go to Heaven, because his selfless act in saving Anne Marie earned him back his chance. Charlie and Anne Marie gave their condolences and their "love yous", and Charlie goes back to Heaven, much wiser than he was before. If you ask me, I wish Don Bluth's All Dogs go to Heaven was given a second chance; it has good storytelling in character development, it has a good moral on not taking your lives for granted, and it was the last good film by Don Bluth before things went wrong, starting with Rock-a-Doodle. Disney's the Little Mermaid was NOT the film that put Disney back into the Spotlight; if anything, it was "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", the film that not only kickstarted the Disney Renaissance, but a Renaissance for Animation as a whole. If it wasn't for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, we wouldn't have Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Ren and Stimpy, or any of the films Disney put out besides their version of the Little Mermaid. P.S. I know it's a long wall of text, but I want to emphasize how much I despite Disney's version of the Little Mermaid, because of a lack of morality that has been carried over to our current day, no thanks to movies like Ralph Breaks the Internet, Encanto, and Turning Red.

GMD definitely doesn't get enough credit. People herald Little Mermaid as the beginning of the renaissance when it was GMD that convinced the studio to keep making movies in the first place.

It turned out a lot better than we thought it would, and honestly it might actually be a great way to get around a lot of the copyright trouble that usually happens when you talk about movies. Which is an added bonus. But yeah, you can get a loooot of good moments out of those in-betweens :)

To be fair it's easy to lose track of your story's implications when you're only focusing on the basics of the story and trim as much fat as possible to make it fit the 90 minutes runtime, and this was also a very messy time for Disney productions culminating with the black cauldron which kept getting delayed and remade over many years.

If I were to choose a favorite video essay out of all that she has made so far (excluding the ones on Moominvalley, because otherwise Moominvalley would completely dominate my top 5) I would choose The Lorax episode, as it critiqued how a corporation could only deliver a half baked anti-corporate moral and what could’ve been, I guess the Click episode for finding a deep message in a bad movie, but my absolute favorite is the Pleasantville episode, as it discussed a film where a kid tries to escape his existential world problems by watching his favorite slice-of-life show - a concept so relatable *as fuck* in a pandemic world that I HAD to drop 5 bucks to watch it.

We have a lot to say that we think the audience needs to hear, but often the work and audience don't need it - we just want to include it as the author because it matters to us. Not always the case of course, but it can give that impression. Also depends on the audience, and a moot point if you are writing the script for you instead of for the audience 😊
