Despecialized is too bright imo, it takes away a lot of the atmosphere/mood. But whatever your opinions about these are, you can't deny that John Williams score. Such a masterpiece.
Agreed. In the 2019 version, I like how even at a distance you can see a cloud in front of the lower sun. 0:01 The darker sky provides an overall better contrast. And like you said, largely contributes to the atmosphere of the scene.
Binary Sunset looks a bit too dark for my tastes in the Special Edition. The colours of Harmy's are more realistic to the brightness and saturation of the eventide in a desert. As someone who's lived in a desert I can say that the sunsets and evenings were beautiful, more beautiful than the country I actually live in. Deserts as a whole are just interesting, by day it's into the oven, by night it's out of the frying pan into a cold that even some northern countries can't match.
Well, I'd still take the Disney version over the Lowry version for the 2004 DVDs/2011 Blu-rays. But I think Harmy's version of this scene looks better.
Why would you make the most iconic scene in all of Star Wars, indeed one of the most iconic scenes in cinema, darker and harder to see?!?! The despecialized edition is how I’ll always remember it!
@Ted Pikulwasn't the idea that he was going to use the new 4k special edition and 4k77 for a new version of despecialized? Or did I imagine reading that?
I'll be doing a two source comparison of many of the most "relevant" sources, so after the Disney vs Despecialized for Star Wars/Ep IV), I'll upload videos of the same scenes for Disney vs 4K77 (and then eventually Despecialized vs 4K77, etc...), and then move on to ESB (or even ROTJ before given the complications involved with 4K80)!
@@StarWarsComparison Can you do the comparison for the opening of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) in the 2006 Original Theatrical Version DVD, the 2011 Blu-ray and the 2019 Disney+ print, please?
They're not Lucas's true vision and he would only ever allow the Special Editions to be released as the definitive versions. It's unclear whether or not Disney will ever release the theatrical versions as the 4K set of the Skywalker Saga contains the latest Special Editions of the original trilogy.
Torrent sites like ThePirateBay have them I’m pretty sure. There’s also the custom made BD sets on eBay, that I bought. Technically illegal though unless you have official BD copies.
Or... you know... get them from the creator who explicitly says they are FREE? Here's a link to the instructions: docs.google.com/document/d/1yLsvexWBVM8IYSGopKuSfsGk5YIgCwQWd23bqb5ryD4/pub#h.q1bazrl7z15u
@@theketaminefrog6366 Google is your friend. "4K77 v1.4 No-DNR" you'll find it eventually.. It's basically a very high end scan of a mint quality technicolor print. This means there's almost no difference to how it looked on screen in 1977. There is also a "DNR" version if you like your films looking waxed and lifeless. Jedi is also out. The best version yet is "4K83 v1.3 minimal DNR". There was a problem with the scan that required some DNR to remove digital noise. 4K80 has been dragging on for years. They're asking for donations to finish scanning a very good print. There are other projects that are also taking forever. However there is a "Grindhouse" version of Empire that's pretty good, certainly better than any official version. The Disney versions have the most obscene and obvious DNR to date. Technically they should be one step closer to the original negative than these prints, but they're based off the Interpositives produced with the 'Special Editions'. Disney just got Lowry Digital to re-scan those and smear their DNR algorithms everywhere to scrub every spec of grain and a lot of detail. They've also graded them with this obnoxious HDR gimmick for the mass market Flatscreen crowd. Meaning if you don't have the right equipment, the picture is dull and grey. 4K77 and 4K83 have preserved all the original grain, detail, colour, contrast, and crucially pre-1997 cuts. They look objectively superior and are comparable with detail levels. Despecialised has never really seemed necessary. They've always been based off the official DVD or Blurays so the DNR and colours are usually incorrect.
What's with professional studios mastering things so damn dark and ugly? The DBZ Level sets were similar. Looked amazing but too damn dark. Idk why they think that looks good!
This is more disappointing than maclunkey. You can hardly see anything, 4K or otherwise. I only hope it serves as a useful source for future fan preservation projects.
